Up to date with all yours and Lyle's videos and just want to say say how impressed I am by the highest standards of work you do. So I'm watching them again. I played fenders all my days from a blonde Tremolux to Deluxe to a Quad reverb. Keep the videos coming.
Sense your pain at various points, Brad. (Hard to miss! 😅) But ... this _is_ now the best Twin in Australia, correct? Or perhaps the southern hemisphere? Or maybe ... THE WORLD!! 😎🙌👏
Why can't I find and OCD service agent in my area :( The pride to take in your work is outstanding, and I just hope more people see these vids and you get heaps of work out of it. And most honest customers do not mind paying extra for this standard of work, so don't ever feel bad for asking them.
The amp came in as a basket case. The amp leaves and you're now the basket case. But hey another pristine example of a classic tube amp lives on. And time will heal all wounds. Great work as always Brad.
I love seeing a job done properly, even if doing so makes it not cost effective! These amps deserve this sort of treatment, it'd be better to let them rot away than do a half-assed job of fixing them. You clearly take a lot of pride in your work, it's nice to see.
Great video want to share something I was taught by Steve Henning in Austin Texas he did Srv an EJS Speaker work so all these fenders guess what baffle board material they use ??? particle board so the first thing he did to EJS amps and Stevies or Jimmys amps was changing the baffles in all of them every twin Ej had was replaced with specific baffle board material and painted black and grill cloth replaced back You hear the speaker as they are then and if still an issue you get correct speakers which might take a year to get 2 or 4 speakers done. If Jensen then they needed to be right and matched. Now you might say pain in butt but if you use voidless birch and paint it flat black and install new t bolts and all bolt up speakers right in it and hook them right on up to new baffle board. the amp sounds better there would be no dead spots in wood...
❤❤❤ For twins, especially AB763's check out the GA-SC64 + Legend 1258 combo. Just got to avoid something mushy or bosomy in V2. I really love those Tung Sol 6L6GC STR's too. Really nails that phat 5881 sound. Nothing like the (still cool but very different) JJ 6's. Amazing work dude. I really appreciate that I found your channel via Lyle! Its so cool to know people are still out there loving this stuff. Edit: If you actually use the reverb (for me 3-always-on) definitely use Vishay ceramics throughout. The 0.022uf coupling cap in to the 500pf reverb mixer especially: stuff a Vishay class 2 Z5U in there instead of a film. Really lifts the blanket. They always come in light at 17uf ish. Definitely works!
Fantastic series mate. Wish I was located in NSW I would bring my fender twin to you. It’s nowhere as bad as this one was, but I would love to know someone of your quality of work went through it and fixed a couple issues…really enjoyed your vid. Good luck.
Flick me an email and I'll let you know if there's someone nearby I can recommend for servicing that twin, mate. We've got a solid network of techs worldwide that we can trust.
What a frickin adventure that one was. Reverb sounded great on the video and man the amount of work you put in this amp. You should weigh all the s..t taken out and charge by the kilo. Lol great job brother man, love your work Brad
Yep, Brad did an amazing job. The thing Fender definitely did right was to not build a disposable product. These amps were built with service and repair in mind. How many Katanas do you think will still be in service 50, 30, even 20 years after production?
@socallars3748 well I have a few solid state amps from the 70's and early 80's so it's not just hand wired tube amps that last for years. The katana is a well built amp and should easily last 20 years.
That was fun one to watch! :D Nice work as well. Do you have bad experience on JJ overall or only certain types like 6L6? JJ being only tube these days that's both available and reasonably priced, I've had many of those and only one or maybe 2 have failed. Not sure which point of view I would have, number of sets I've had is maybe a dozen + low tens of preamp tubes, so even one failed tube would mean high fail rate in percentage, but they come with 6 month warranty where I buy 'em, so it's not total disaster..
Cobber, you’ve killed it, great job! Something to aspire to for myself on my upcoming rebuild. I do plan to use the pull pot to patch in some clipping diodes, but apart from that, I’m following your pattern here. Full rebuild and full sex appeal. Fuck yeah.
Nice work. I'm wondering which brand and type of resistors you currently use in the preamp? I generally use 1watt or higher on everything because modern parts look like junk. I think USA distributors change brands to increase profits and carry a lot of garbage.
That turned out amazing. It sounds great. How much does that cap across the balance pot filter the ripple? Is that something I should do to my 67 Bassman ab165. Thanks Legend. Really enjoyed the series 👌
Aloha and Mahalo Brad! Info is much appreciated. Always wanted to build an amp. Again no money but one day. Always wanted at make an amp with blackface and tweed preamp. With valve and rectifier and A/B and cathode bias. Just another Mess Boogie. I realized several simple amps are best. Just need to know what I'm looking for. Stupid cause I sit at my condo and can't crank it up. Got to some volume to get the sounds. I just need to play and find out. Can't get Handivan driver to be my get away car.
Yeah, you find with all the options, after a few weeks, you tend to just default to one and leave it there, so just build the amp that way. It would be useful as a demonstration amplifier for determining the architecture of a custom build, but what's the point? The customer will always change their mind in 6 months, anyway. At least they do in my experience.
Great job as you always do Brad. I have always thought orange drop coupling capacitors were way over rated, especially when you compare them to the Panasonic caps. Tbh I found the el cheapo Xicon caps that look similar to Panasonic caps to be a better choice over orange drops.
I think this one may have suffered due to the soldering technique and/or may be 2nd hand from some position in some unknown device from the previous tech.
Technician, artist and comedian. Quite the combo!
I only get paid for one, though. Lol!

Really really nice work bro.

Pain in the arse or not , this series shows exactly how good and thorough of an amp tech you really are, cheers to you for another great repair.
Good job on the repair. Yeah I know about silver face Twins that don’t want to leave the bench.
What an amazing restoration! Sounds fantastic. the owner must be over the moon with the end result.
Quite a contrast between the gunk in the first video and the end product. It ate your lunch but be proud of what you did.

And beer.
Fender Evil Twin - Thanks for taking us along. Enjoy not having it on you bench anymore.

Considering the condition this amp came in at, this is a great job of repairing and restoration! Brad, you really know your stuff.

Thanks Clay! Hopefully I'll have time to do a series on the Super Reverb I need to get done ASAP.
top job
Really loved this Brad. The detailed explanations are gold. Thanks so much!

Great restoration, this amp is going to sound great for years. Well done
To avoid repetition, let’s say it in French : magnifique boulot Brad. Tu es le meilleur !😉
Wow! Nice work!
got to love a twin! Not sure why but I have an urge to buy some Gillette razors.

Great work on that one Brad. That wound up being a complete restoration.

My God , i can imagine the frustration..Id love to know what the customer paid for this extensive rebuild ! Great job bu the way.
Nice job! Certainly better than how Fender would have lashed it together in the 70's 😂

Great work Brad.. Another classic given a new lease of life.
excellent job its great to see a twin in excellent shape most of the ones i see in studios are beat up and tired, keep up the good work !!
Sounds great.
Hell yeah
Fantastic job on this! Man, I have to tell you, while I felt your pain on this, you made me laugh a ton of times. I think we’d get along well..lol!

It's a handy switch for other mods, possibly feedback which I think I mentioned.
Just check that the "on" resistance is satisfactory.
I only use Polyprophylene capacitors
Orange drops are $$ & they lack dynamics
Xion sound better & are very economical
I have a 65 super reverb and the amp is very bright, I have to turn treble down to one and the bass to 8 . The amp is like this on both channels.
What a fantastic job👌
Perfect

You saved the cursed Silver Face Twin! How did it sound to your ear compared to the SM57?
Good morning from Chicago
Looks so much better, almost back to new.
So did you sit in the corner rocking backwards and forwards for an evening? 🤣😂
nice work. 2x👍
I’d say better than new. Some of lengths gone to … an act of love, if you ask me.
@@johnvcougar you have a point. 👍👍 Bloody good workmanship.
In a word, Yes.
Rocking in a non-rock'n'roll way. Lol!
@@BradsGuitarGarage LOL
I'm just like you. If it isn't right, aka perfect, it's not good enough to give back to the customer.
hahahaha get a real job!
I'll try one day.
Brad, have you heard ESP as covered by the Beasts Of Bourbon?
A mind blower..
Well done Brad
Mudhoney eh!
