  • I love working on landscapes in Second Life. It is calming and relaxing and makes the areas around me look so nice. But the terraforming tools are often a bit overwhelming to people at first. In this video I walk through some of the ways you can terraform and some things to keep in mind. I also talk about my design philosophy when it comes to adding things to your landscape.

    I'm finding it difficult to work with my first parcel. That was REALLY helpful. Thank you

    I had to come back months later and comment on this video xD I literally learned how to terraform solely from this and tbh I terraform like a boss, I get compliments all the time on my parcels, it's an excellent creative outlet for me and I absolutely love doing it. Everytime I terraform something new I go "aaaand hit it with a smooth" when I'm smoothing and it cracks me up. Thanks for the awesome tutorials, I just learned the camera offset feature from you too. :)

      I honestly remember the first time I learned this and just sat there like. "Are you serious? That's all you have to do?" I am glad I was able to pass this along to you and everyone. Happy terraforming and thanks for coming back to comment!

      I have a collection of scripted tools I made... My favorite is the bulldozer. It can completely flatten a sim's terrain in seconds. I've also got a tool I call the Trench Digger, which follows a preset path, digging a ditch to a specified depth, and slightly raising the terrain on either side to simulate displacement of dirt. Just all kinds of nifty tools I've made over the years.
      I used to build sims professionally. I've done work for all sorts of big companies back before the Anshe Chung CNET interview incident scared all the corporations out of SL.

    My first introduction into terraforming and landscaping.You make it look so easy and fun . I'm hooked !
    I guess I'll have to buy some land to terraform once I'm finished practicing at Ivory Towers.

      The nice thing is you can always flatten everything back out and start over. Just have fun with it.

    I'm five minutes in and already LOVE your style of landscaping! Reminds me of the central coast of California. I'm 14+ years in SL and am FINALLY going to let my Lindern Home go, so I can buy on mainland. I know basically nothing about how to terraform or landscape, so your video is EVERYTHING! Thanks for sharing what you know. :)

    What a find! I'm so glad I stumbled on this video! I learned a LOT, my goodness! I am so excited to learn why I am getting jaggedy edges on my regions when I terraform. I thought I was moving the pixels too much and they would refuse to go back. O.M.G. I cannot wait to try out these ideas!! Thank you!

Also, when I first met you in CTS WARDROBE group I told you that you were SL famous and... you sounded.. so surprised! Now, I get it! in one video you inspire me, teach me like 30 different things ..< been staring at this parcel (slanty parcel) for a year cross-eyed and just playing really..even though i tried (did i mention sooo slanty?), anyway i'll stop the ramble and talk to ya inworld..haven't said hiiiz in group for a cool minute. Thank you so freakin' much for this video...you have no idea ..

    Thank you SO much; this was very helpful. Since I have already messed up the edge of one of my properties (since I did not then have your great tip about raising my land first!), and my efforts at correcting the jaggedness have not been too successful, do you have any remedial terraforming tips? Thanks for all you do!

    • @ButtacwupPwincess
      @ButtacwupPwincess  7 років тому +1

      My best tip is sadly not very specific and it is practice. the best thing about terraforming is that you an always flatten and start over. I am so glad the video and tip on starting the land a little higher was usful

    • @ButtacwupPwincess
      @ButtacwupPwincess  6 років тому

      i dont really have land that I am able to show that as I only have small parcel of land. I buy land from who ever is renting a good price and where the region resources are well managed to cut down on log.

  • @roymc2726
    @roymc2726 4 роки тому

    Thank you for your video. With your clear instructions, tips and beautiful examples of landscaping design, I know I'm learning from a pro! QUESTION: Please forgive me if I missed this, but in the parcel you worked on, why does part of the terrain look like rocky soil and the rest look like grass? Can you, as the builder, control this or is it a random coincidence?

    • @ButtacwupPwincess
      @ButtacwupPwincess  4 роки тому

      it's up to the owner of the region to control what textures are used. You can set different textures in different areas and heights.

    Another awesome vid! :) I would like to know as well, what the difference is between, Land Impact and Prim count? As I have always wondered and been confused about this. Thank you in advance

    • @ButtacwupPwincess
      @ButtacwupPwincess  7 років тому +1

      So glad you liked it. Let me give the short answer here on LI vs Prim Count. For the vast majority of Second Life they mean exactly the same thing. Prior to the introduction of the concept of land impact objects were more or less counted and the number of objects in a build were deducted from the available prim count for a parcel. Sculpted objects were given an equivalent prim count when they were uploaded. So a house that was 50 objects deducted 50 prims from the total available. The decision was made though that the actual impact that the design of an object has is dependent on the object itself. A simple cube prim has almost no visual impact and was given a Land Impact to match its prim count. But take that same cube and stretch and distort it an all of the sudden the viewer needs to work harder to render it. So the simple cube moves from a 1 impact to a 2 or a 3. It is really a concern for builders and designers to try and make objects that have a low land impact.
      For the majority of Second Life, the consumers if you see that an object has a listed land impact of 10 that means about the same as saying it has a prim count of 10. Your parcel supports a number of "prims". That total number is what is reduced by the new land impact when you rez something out.

    It's not so much the physics engine, it's your hitbox hasn't freed from the land yet. So you have to get out, and then you won't be bouncing anymore. As someone who terraforms a lot, I'd recommend to always fly while working.
