- I love working on landscapes in Second Life. It is calming and relaxing and makes the areas around me look so nice. But the terraforming tools are often a bit overwhelming to people at first. In this video I walk through some of the ways you can terraform and some things to keep in mind. I also talk about my design philosophy when it comes to adding things to your landscape.

I'm finding it difficult to work with my first parcel. That was REALLY helpful. Thank you
love more videos on this
I had to come back months later and comment on this video xD I literally learned how to terraform solely from this and tbh I terraform like a boss, I get compliments all the time on my parcels, it's an excellent creative outlet for me and I absolutely love doing it. Everytime I terraform something new I go "aaaand hit it with a smooth" when I'm smoothing and it cracks me up. Thanks for the awesome tutorials, I just learned the camera offset feature from you too. :)
I honestly remember the first time I learned this and just sat there like. "Are you serious? That's all you have to do?" I am glad I was able to pass this along to you and everyone. Happy terraforming and thanks for coming back to comment!
I have a collection of scripted tools I made... My favorite is the bulldozer. It can completely flatten a sim's terrain in seconds. I've also got a tool I call the Trench Digger, which follows a preset path, digging a ditch to a specified depth, and slightly raising the terrain on either side to simulate displacement of dirt. Just all kinds of nifty tools I've made over the years.
I used to build sims professionally. I've done work for all sorts of big companies back before the Anshe Chung CNET interview incident scared all the corporations out of SL.
My first introduction into terraforming and landscaping. You make it look so easy and fun . I'm hooked !
I guess I'll have to buy some land to terraform once I'm finished practicing at Ivory Towers.
The nice thing is you can always flatten everything back out and start over. Just have fun with it.
I think I love you, I love all my best teachers. Be safe and keep teaching.
YAY! Thanks very much for the kind words. I am always so happy when people are helped by the videos.
I really enjoyed your video, particularly the use of 'select land' and the smooth tool. That's going to be fun to experiment with!
Glad it was useful
I will be honest a lot of the video wasnt relevant to what I needed but OMG one section on selecting land and terraforming to flatten land made my life so easy took me seconds to do what use to cause me drama thank you so much
That is awesome. I totally agree over the years it has been the small tips, improvements to something I already new pretty well that have helped the most.
Thank you so much for this, I have really learned how to utilize all the functions within the edit terrain menu because of your help. I appreciate this tutorial!
very welcome! Glad it was useful.
Best tutorial I've seen on this. You have an artist's eye.
Thank you very much!
You're awesome. Thank you.
great video :)
Great tutorial. Would love to see you dive in deeper. I want to know how to terraform other landscapes like beaches. I am trying to figure out how to put sand down near my waters edge to form a small beach.
i effin love you dude...most of these stuff I already know but i love watching ur videos, your voice is relaxing and I just love watching u, ur avi is a cutie pie too ^^ keep up the good work
Thanks very much Cassi.. glad you like.
I'm five minutes in and already LOVE your style of landscaping! Reminds me of the central coast of California. I'm 14+ years in SL and am FINALLY going to let my Lindern Home go, so I can buy on mainland. I know basically nothing about how to terraform or landscape, so your video is EVERYTHING! Thanks for sharing what you know. :)
I am so glad it was useful. Landscaping is so fun. Enjoy!!
Thank you so much!!!! I'm gonna launch myself into terraforming and landscaping and your tuto is by far the clearest I've found! I wish I could have come to hug you inworld lol! Thank you!!!!
I am so happy it was useful.. Hugs are always welcome.
Decorating has always been my thing but as of late I have been trying my hand at terraforming and landscaping, so your video has been so useful! Thank you so much for sharing these tips!
Its so much fun to do both. I am glad it was helpful!
What a find! I'm so glad I stumbled on this video! I learned a LOT, my goodness! I am so excited to learn why I am getting jaggedy edges on my regions when I terraform. I thought I was moving the pixels too much and they would refuse to go back. O.M.G. I cannot wait to try out these ideas!! Thank you!
I hope it works out for you! I am glad you stumbled in.
great tips even though I have been using the terraforming tools for over a year now there's things I didnt think about. And you explain very simple and in clear manner without adding so much humour you forget what the video is about lol. Good job!
I am glad it was helpful!
great job, reference to the amazing Bob Ross was touching :)
Thanks
Excellent The Land of "Forgotten" thanks you :)
Thank you Pwincess, very informative.
Thanks very much
I appreciate you so much ♥♥♥♥♥Thank you!!
Omgods , yep ya floored me..AND I couldn't get it out of my head the whole video ...how happy you were making me..with your obvious passion in landscaping AND that you ARE the SL Bob Ross!!!! Also, when I first met you in CTS WARDROBE group I told you that you were SL famous and... you sounded.. so surprised! Now, I get it! in one video you inspire me, teach me like 30 different things ..< been staring at this parcel (slanty parcel) for a year cross-eyed and just playing really..even though i tried (did i mention sooo slanty?), anyway i'll stop the ramble and talk to ya inworld..haven't said hiiiz in group for a cool minute. Thank you so freakin' much for this video...you have no idea ..
um.. oh....um... wow! This is seriously such an awesome comment. I am super happy that its useful. I need to think on that Bob Ross comment.
Think more on making a video just for slanty land owners *chuckles* being called the SL Bob RoSs is a high compliment I assure you
Fantastic video! Thank you! I now have nice flat land!!
welcome!
Thank you SO much; this was very helpful. Since I have already messed up the edge of one of my properties (since I did not then have your great tip about raising my land first!), and my efforts at correcting the jaggedness have not been too successful, do you have any remedial terraforming tips? Thanks for all you do!
My best tip is sadly not very specific and it is practice. the best thing about terraforming is that you an always flatten and start over. I am so glad the video and tip on starting the land a little higher was usful
LOL, thanks, yeah I need to find some practice land to terraform the cr@p outta.
Where do you buy the land? Please do a video also on how to divide land up for rentals. Thanks. Enjoyed the vid!
i dont really have land that I am able to show that as I only have small parcel of land. I buy land from who ever is renting a good price and where the region resources are well managed to cut down on log.
Thank you for your video. With your clear instructions, tips and beautiful examples of landscaping design, I know I'm learning from a pro! QUESTION: Please forgive me if I missed this, but in the parcel you worked on, why does part of the terrain look like rocky soil and the rest look like grass? Can you, as the builder, control this or is it a random coincidence?
it's up to the owner of the region to control what textures are used. You can set different textures in different areas and heights.
This is really inspiring. Do you have links to the stores you mentioned?
I don't really but shout in world and I can point you in the right direction.
Another awesome vid! :) I would like to know as well, what the difference is between, Land Impact and Prim count? As I have always wondered and been confused about this. Thank you in advance
So glad you liked it. Let me give the short answer here on LI vs Prim Count. For the vast majority of Second Life they mean exactly the same thing. Prior to the introduction of the concept of land impact objects were more or less counted and the number of objects in a build were deducted from the available prim count for a parcel. Sculpted objects were given an equivalent prim count when they were uploaded. So a house that was 50 objects deducted 50 prims from the total available. The decision was made though that the actual impact that the design of an object has is dependent on the object itself. A simple cube prim has almost no visual impact and was given a Land Impact to match its prim count. But take that same cube and stretch and distort it an all of the sudden the viewer needs to work harder to render it. So the simple cube moves from a 1 impact to a 2 or a 3. It is really a concern for builders and designers to try and make objects that have a low land impact.
For the majority of Second Life, the consumers if you see that an object has a listed land impact of 10 that means about the same as saying it has a prim count of 10. Your parcel supports a number of "prims". That total number is what is reduced by the new land impact when you rez something out.
Ah I see! Thank you so much for answering and explaining this to me :)
very welcome.
Thank you for this video! I am unable to remove tall grass that I added. Its untouchable. I did the Ctrl Alt T and searched for it in Area Search for objects. Nothing happened. It's Stuck :) can you help me please? Thanks!!!
If you give me a shout in world I can come help
"HOW-to" series... please how to make a beach? (specially .... in a small parcel). TY :)
I have gotten a few messages about continuing this series to doing other things. I will have to look into getting some temporary land first so that I have a better place to work. If I can find something suitable cost wise I definitely will. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
@@ButtacwupPwincess I have a small parcel you can use, I am at a loss for how to do a beach leading to an underwater scene. Look me up in world, suasawan. Hope to hear from you soon. Oh, I see this is from three years ago. Bet that video is already finished. I'll look for it. Thanks.
When you click on the item your menu is different. What viewer do you use? When I edit stuff, it disappears while moving it. Looking at your video , I see it is still viewed. What am I doing wrong? Please help?
When I right click on the item I only get the pinwheel menu.
I use Catznip. I believe the pie menu thing can be disabled in Firestorm if that is what your using. Sorry though I don't know where to do it.
Ok Thank you for the reply. Great video :)
I love this video. Thank you for doing this :) Terraforming is not my forte either
I am glad its helpful!
It's not so much the physics engine, it's your hitbox hasn't freed from the land yet. So you have to get out, and then you won't be bouncing anymore. As someone who terraforms a lot, I'd recommend to always fly while working.
Is there a way to become friends with you on sl ?
mhmm just send me a message. Buttacwup Pwincess.
Buttacwup Pwincess already did :p I'm yumi ;)
Sooo.. could you teach me a 1 on 1 class in world please :3
You an reach out to me in world and I can prolly help.
