You can't really identify with humans if you never get a chance to BE one. So the whole "you're not a mutant, your powers are gone" storyline is actually him playing 4d chess with himself...delibrately depowering himself and wiping his own memory except for one night a year where he checks time and space to see that he and his family will be ok...and makes any neccassary adjustments. clever kid. also a great way to let valeria have the spotlight for a bit, becasue really..he could be JUST as smart as her and THEN some if he WANTED to be. In the case of Richards vs. Manhattan..there's EVERY reason to believe that even if Manhattan went up against a "depowered" richards and his family/freinds... the ACTUAL franklin would be ready and waiting nontheless...and simply spin the ball so that the FF wins and sends manhattan packing. or worst acse scenario..intervene directly. manhattan is so dissassosiated, he only knows what he WILL do..but not WHY.
