Great tune and cool reaction video! Thanks! The B-52's guitar player (Ricky Wilson -RIP) used 4 strings with some unusual tuning on a few of their early songs. The two top strings were tuned the same (?!), the two middle strings were not even there, and two bottom strings were tuned higher, with one of them being the same note as the two top strings. On this song he didn't play the two bottom strings very much until after the second "Down! Down" section. I've read that he wanted it to sound like two guitars. The keyboard bass also comes in at that part. What an amazing song!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video! The arrangement of this song with Ricky's guitar and Cindy's Farfisa is indeed quite iconic. But I've wondered about the 4 string aspect for years. I had also heard that he "wanted it to sound like two different guitars". However, removing the two middle strings doesn't really change a guitar's sound (you would need to partially mute or move a pickup to only two strings to achieve that). So why cut two strings rather than do what every other guitar player does and just use an FX foot pedal to (better) achieve that effect? It's a mystery... -Dr. Smith

You're lucky to have had someone introduce you to that sort of music before the MTV era. My father was a jazz pianist and more into big band kinda stuff, so I had to find music on my own (through the local music scene and with the help of people like Rodney Bingenheimer). Also, If you still have enough hair left at 53 to rock a mowhawk, you're already doin' better than most! (Perhaps your dad's just jealous?) :) -Dr. Smith
