I would love to get your input on paint vs wallpaper! Also, any interest on a video on the topic of lighting? I hope you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching ❤️
The last time I used wallpaper, was the last time I used wallpaper. It was years ago and when it came time to remove, it was hard work and damage to the drywall is a possibility. It may be easier now with the use of removable wallpaper, so I don't want to discourage you from trying it. Personally, I will always opt for paint. Find a wall paper pattern you like and have a stencil made and do that, as an option. Just some thoughts. Whatever you do, I'm very confident it will look beautiful in the end.
I love wallpaper when I see it in other people’s homes but I just could never figure out how to put that up as well as art without it clashing or being matchy matchy … sigh
I have no interest in wallpaper, but would really like guidance on lighting. Especially wired lighting and how to optimize a room's brightness. Lighting makes such a difference when used correctly. I really like your concept of flexibility in getting neutral items you could pass on if they don't suit. I love color and, after years of linen white, started painting rooms in favorite colors. All are warm and welcoming and people seem to enjoy the color. I'll never go back to the basics, although I do see the flexibility of basic walls and using accent pieces in bold colors. Once I committed to colors I love, I always feel happy to welcome in my own home!
@@jjdicarloutube When I was looking at houses, I went into one that had wallpaper on every surface except the floors. It was a nightmare! Wallpaper always looks dated to me. I know that Melba will select changes that work well for her, but I agree that wallpaper is very tricky to get right.
Your style is beautiful. I’m 69 and have been thrifting since is was 12 with my mom also antiques. They joy is finding the things you love and want to surround yourself with. It’s a joy to save $$$ at the same time. And as you journey thru life if your style changes your not out tons of money. Keep on your journey . I’m still at it each week.
I love your honesty in your evaluation of your skills. You see perfect rooms on channels but at what cost? I too buy second hand and change pieces out as my tastes evolve. I really enjoy your channel. Don’t lose the honesty you bring!
Yes, go for the full-length mirror. I like the bedside lamps, but just a suggestion: the lamps will look better if you prop them up on top of stacked books or decorative boxes so that the top of the shades are the same height or slightly higher than the top of the headboard. It makes the "eyeline" of the space calmer and casts a better light into your lap when you're sitting on the bed. The eyeline is the general height of the furniture in the room. The more your eye travels up and down (vivid art, low bench, medium-size headboard, or whatever) the more dynamic and energetic the space seems. The more the heights of artwork and furnishings line up, the smoother the eyeline becomes, and the calmer the space seems. Look at photos of ritzy hotel rooms and you'll notice the eyelines are all very smooth and restful. I love watching your journey as an interior decorator - bon chance from a retired interior designer.
What a gorgeous guest room. Such a tranquil space. I love wallpaper but clean painted walls look good too. If you fall in love with a particular wallpaper just go for it. I had a wry smile at the owl cushion. I once had something similar 😂 but have moved on too. No shade to any owl cushion lovers!
The guest room needs a full length mirror. Until then I would remove the round mirror. I love that you discuss buying second hand. I think that is the best way to go!
You're a girl after my own heart. It's easy to point out what was purchased "new" at my house because it's so few pieces! BTW, I say go with the long mirror in the guest room. I think your guests will appreciate it. Keep the great videos coming!
I like your presentation style as well as your tips for buying secondhand. I also look for second hand pieces for the home but am not as patient as you and sometimes buy without a plan.
Love that large painting - a grasscloth wallpaper might pair well with it, but painting EVERYTHING (including ceiling and trim) in a color from the swiss coffee palette would be both cozy and stylish.
Grasscloth is what I have been dreaming of for that space for the longest time! I have read that the seams are more visible because it is made from natural fibers plus some other considerations to think about. If you have used it I would appreciate any advice! Also Swiss Coffee looks lovely! Bright but on the warmer side. I appreciate your input here, thank you! 😊🙏🏽❤️
All of the tips you intersperse throughout your videos are so helpful, thank you! Would love to see a video on how you approach finding the right wallpaper and how you install it ❤
Looks beautiful! I am a big fan of wallpaper, but I think in this space a nice warm color on the walls would be better. That way you can keep that pretty artwork :) the wallpaper might clash with the art too. Right now the room is very calm and pretty. Thank you for sharing your ideas and great design!! :)
I have done both - prefer paint and having an accent wall so I don't have to repaint every wall when I feel a need for a change. Also, love the idea of the full length mirror on the back of the door. I LOVE your channel!
I also enjoy paint for that reason! I'd be curious to hear more about your experience with wallpaper - what you used and any tips/specific considerations based off of your experience. I'm happy that you are enjoying the channel, thank you for being a part of the community! 😊
Yes, please do a video on lighting and include how you determined where to put your recessed lighting (also the size you chose and why). Price for electrical work would be helpful even though it varies from state to state…it’s a ballpark figure to start with. I’ve been thinking about this idea for my master bedroom. I love the bench and prefer full length mirrors in guest rooms if you can do it. I really enjoy your practical approach to design, some things thrifted/second hand and some new pieces. It’s so much better on the wallet.
Thank you for this very detailed input on what you would find helpful seeing in a potential lighting video (if anything else comes up that you’d like to see please continue adding it here lol). Thanks for your input on the mirror, I think the long mirror will be replacing the smaller one 😊 I appreciate your comment, it’s helpful to hear what you are enjoying about the channel! 🙏🏽
I love how intentional you are about everything you do. And that art - I actually got a similar piece for my room and like you, built around that art! I think that is a great tip - find a statement piece for inspiration and go from there. And funny thing is - I also got shams from Pottery Barn! I got the Parker ones in khaki and another set in gray so we can switch them up. Anyway, I think that room looks lovely and what guest wouldn’t feel special there? I love how your doggy is so smart! She noticed the lights when they turned on. Not every dog would even care about that! Haha!
I immediately went to look up the Parker shams on the PB website, I am a fan of the style and really like that Khaki color! 🤩 Thank you for your kind words from both Suki 🐕 and I. I hope you are enjoying your art and your shams! 😊🙌🏽
Hi darling what a great job you did to the guest room I think the bigger mirror looks best also I don’t put tvs in guest rooms or in my room it’s important when we go to sleep we need to sleep. Getting a goods night rest is so important! I think wall paper there are so many beautiful ones to choose from 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️
Hi Susan 🤗 thank you! You all have convinced me on the bigger mirror 🙌🏽 Also thank you for the vote for wallpaper (I agree with you there are soo many fun options to choose from) and you make a great point on TVs in bedrooms!
I’m much more into color, but you do an excellent job using a more neutral palette in your decorating. I think everyone would benefit from your idea of how lighting effects color in decorating. Great idea. You might do color swatches on foam core board and set it in that room and adjust the lighting. Also wallpaper. That will be a challenge with your beautiful art. Success.
I like explaining your thought process, and showing the evolution of the room. And the prices. You have such talent! I usually go for paint bc wallpaper is harder to remove, plus often gaudy.
Love the look of the full length mirror! You have inspired me to look into second hand items to furnish my house. I've bought a few things in the past and after some Google lense research, found they're actually valuable! So excited to keep finding things slowly. Love the high-end collected look you've got going!! I am a maximalist at heart, so wallpaper would be my choice. I'm sure whatever you pick will look great!
Hi Melba! 😆 woohoo on your valuable finds and please keep us posted on new pieces you pick up, I hope you have fun! And thank you for the vote on wall treatment! 😊
A full length mirror on the back of the guest room door would be a plus for a guest. Also, I prefer warm light over cool light for everything. Your style has come a long way, and you certainly are quite clever with your second hand purchases. Great job.
Beautiful Room. I enjoy your content. As you are using the room as a guest room, I would keep the full length mirror. I also liked the natural tone vs. the black smaller mirror. The bench will be useful for your guests to put their suitcase on, or you may want to consider a luggage rack, as well. I would have liked to have seen wired in sconces vs. the overhead lighting, but that's my personal taste. Overall, I love what you are doing. You have excellent taste.
Thank you so much Donna! I am with you on the luggage rack, I think it would be a nice touch 😊✨ thank you for your input on the mirror and many great points! 🙏🏽
Bcuz of you ive started doing this. We just bought a 4 bedroom 3 bath home with gameroom. We are coming from a 2 bedroom. We just scored a beautiful cindy crawford sofa loveseat for $100 they had it wrapped in plastic in the garage. We paid friends to deliver it to us for $100. I hv furnished our home in two months. All the neighbirs are amazed because we all started with alot of empty rooms. Tfs
Yay! I’m so happy to hear that the channel has inspired you to give it a try and that you have found some great pieces!! Yes 👏🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 thank you so much for sharing 🥹🙏🏽 enjoy your pieces and your new home!! 💕
Since you mentioned wallpaper, it might get too busy unless you buy a muted color with texture or you can paint using layered stencil or same color paint one flat and the other acrylic. You can make a design on the wall that is not overpowering. Ex: stripes you can put the base paint flat (chalkboard paint) and the acrylic in stripes or any other design you want on top of it.
Hi I know that designers love to put mirrors everywhere. True, it brings in light if the room is not well lit from the outside. However, a mirror with no purpose is not a good option. Of you must have something at the door, you could have a tapestry, another artwork. Of not, maybe you can paint it or add molding to it to make it pop with other colors of your choice.
As for recessed lighting, warm white dimmable is the way to go, imo. Nothing higher than 2,500 Lumens. Vintage dark amber 40W Edison bulbs in table lamps for ambiance. LEDs are far too white and harsh. The art was a fabulous purchase! What a great price! I’d paint before wallpapering and would include the door, trim, and ceiling. Try large removable swatch samples of Swiss Coffee or Griege. The background color of the art is nice. Or another option is to have paint color matched to your curtains. You’re doing great on sourcing items for your room.
Thank you for all the lighting and paint tips and suggestions (I also liked your Silver Sage suggestion)! The Edison bulbs are something I will have to check out! Thank you for the encouraging words! 🤗❤️
Melba, I love how you make everything look so elegant! I bought a house in April and I'm still in the process of decorating, my home office looks like your before pictures :( and that's because I want something special for myself, but no idea what! You're right, an inspiration piece like art work is always great for setting the colors. I think the long mirror would be best to hang on the door. Regarding the lighting, my bedroom looks like your before lighting. For some reason I didn't think recessed lighting was for bedrooms, after seeing this video I will definitely be getting it soon. I already have my glamour headboard and curtains, I know you would love them, they are the neutral colors that you like with a glamorous shine to them. Once again, great video. Keep em coming! -Lety from Chicago
Thank you Lety! I hope you are enjoying your house!! 🙌🏽 I totally understand what you are saying and I know you will make it special! Thank you for the vote on the long mirror! Regarding lighting, I’ve read different approaches to recessed lights in the bedroom - some designers won’t do recessed lights and some will! The glam headboard and curtains sound very nice! 👏🏽🤩✨
Love your channel and the fact you shop secondhand is awesome. I’ve been thrifting for years and have saved a ton of money. Who do you use for furniture delivery?
Thank you Gina! ❤️ I use the Lugg movers mobile app a lot, it’s an on demand delivery service (available in most major US cities). Happy thrifting to you! 😊
I am just realizing how important good lighting is. Maybe that's because I am older. Still not a fan of very cold light. I prefer warmer. Actually the best is when you have a dimmer and a range of light values. I do not like wallpaper having had to remove it a long time ago. I would only consider peel and stick or grass cloth. Your home is lovely.
Thank you Chris! ❤️ I agree with you that a range of light values and dimmer is such a great option! So many considerations with wallpaper! We removed it from one of our bathrooms before and it wasn’t very fun 😆
Recently discovered your channel. I thrift everything pretty much if possible. I regret paying for anything at full price. And vintage furniture is usually better especially for my design style which is more french, traditional style. I live in the bay area too. You could you tell me where you keep finding the Waterford (another one of my loves and I have too much). I am just curious. Please share. 🥰
Melba the video was awesome!!! Are you an "Accountant"? You sound like me when I'm "analyze" my buying decisions for second hand items. Like my Father say " Don't use Dollars to save Pennies"!!!!
Do you list everything you bought and the retail price s the second hand price somewhere? I looked but didn’t see it. I know you put it on the screen but it’s sometimes hard to see
Cool lighting turns me off immediately. Slightly warm lighting is much better. I'm sure the room will turn out well, no matter what you do. You have a very specific taste in decor and a great eye. Wallpaper is complex to install, expensive, and a more permanent option. You can repaint at a low cost and it's easy to "fix" if it's not quite what you wanted. You might consider a white or cream with a very subtle hint of sage or peach on the walls. Again, though, I know your design will work well for your taste and needs.
You summarized the tradeoffs of paint vs wallpaper so well - many of the reasons I keep going back and forth! Thank you for the color suggestions as well 😊
I love your honesty in your evaluation of your skills. You see perfect rooms on channels but at what cost? I too buy second hand and change pieces out as my tastes evolve. I really enjoy your channel. Don’t lose the honesty you bring!

Thank you for all the lighting and paint tips and suggestions (I also liked your Silver Sage suggestion)! The Edison bulbs are something I will have to check out! Thank you for the encouraging words! 🤗❤️
Full length! ( mirror) the port hole mirror is nice in a bathroom or hallway over a entr ance table
Thank you! I went with the full length! 😊🙌🏽
Lighting would be a great video

Haha I am not but it sounds like you and I share that in common! I’m glad you enjoyed the video Angela! Thanks for joining us today! 🤗
Do you list everything you bought and the retail price s the second hand price somewhere? I looked but didn’t see it. I know you put it on the screen but it’s sometimes hard to see
Thanks for this feedback Michelle, moving forward I’ll increase the font size a bit! Unfortunately I don’t list this information anywhere else
Full length
Thank you for the color suggestions as well 😊
Longer one
Wallpaper
Don’t use wallpaper it will fight with your beautiful painting.
TMI…..edit? Also, you’re paying so much in delivery fees!
I love your honesty in your evaluation of your skills. You see perfect rooms on channels but at what cost? I too buy second hand and change pieces out as my tastes evolve. I really enjoy your channel. Don’t lose the honesty you bring!
