Easy Char Siew Chicken Roast | Chinese style red honey bbq chicken
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- OPEN for ingredients! Today we’re making Char Siu chicken. This is a Chinese style, oven roasted bbq chicken marinated to savoury, sweet, sticky perfection. Also super quick and easy to prepare, it's one of my all time favourite chicken recipes.
This is ultra versatile, personally I love eating this with chicken rice (my one pan chicken rice recipe here: • Easy One Pan Hainanese... ) but you can also top noodles with this.
I mentioned chicken leg in the video, this is the entire chicken thigh and drumstick portion, bone removed. I realise this is not that easy to find for most, so use chicken thighs as per ingredients list below. For bone-in chicken thighs, double the time in the oven to 30 to 40 minutes. Check that the internal temperature at the thickest part of the chicken has hit 74 deg celcius or 165 deg fahrenheit to ensure it’s cooked through. Or just poke a fork through thick part and juices run clear and blood-less :)

Ingredients:
- 300 grams Boneless Chicken Thigh (fatty ones are best)
- Marinade
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1 tbsp Light Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 tbsp Dark Soy Sauce or Kicap Manis
- 2 tbsps Brown Sugar
- 1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic Paste (2 garlic cloves + 1 inch Ginger, pureed or grated)
- 1 tsp Chinese Five Spice Powder
- Pinch of white pepper
- 1 tsp red food colouring (optional)
-
EDIT: Yes, I am aware traditionally Char Siu is made with pork. This recipe is for some of us who do not eat pork (me)/prefer chicken. You can use these same ingredients for pork, though be aware that roasting time in the oven might differ. - Навчання та стиль

@@johnwinvlog3819 I dont own an air fryer so i dont actually know for sure XD its just a smaller oven, so try... preheated 200 deg celcius at 15-20 minutes. Poke fork through and make sure juices run clear.
Any desert dish please 😅😇
Steamed dumplings, and fried wonton
Hello ma'am ,next request how to cook chicken rice
Did this tonight with a spatchcocked chicken cooked over charcoal and it was spectacular. Cooked up the left over marinate into a sauce/glaze to paint on and sprinkled with fresh sliced spring onions for garnish. Thanks 😀
That looks absolutely amazing! Chinese food is amongst the best I have ever had - but the prospect of preparing it myself is very daunting. This looks so easy to prepare and tasty! Thank you :)
Thank you for this delicious recipe for Char Siu Chicken. I made it for dinner yesterday and everyone loved it.

your voice is so soothing and chill makes it easier for me to understnd and as a first timer AND who just learn how to cook. thanks for this video!
That chicken looks so delicious and well presented
The sauce prepped was mind blowing. Thanks for sharing this
Many thanks for the great, easy-to-cook recipe, here from Germany! Thanks to you, I've just had a great Sunday lunch. I heated up some diced peppers and onions with the marinade to add a few more colours. It worked really well and the flavour of the meat and sauce was perfect anyway!
This looks absolutely delicious! Thank you for sharing.
Hallo Normadette! OMG! I had tried your recipe and it was fantastice! I was cooking lunch for all my colleagues in the office and asked them afterward "how was it?"... They all loved it! Now my mother in Canada will try it - I've told her it was sooooo good and not too complicated to make it! Thank you so much for a wonderful and delicous dish! And yes, you got a new subscriber!
Made this recipe few days ago and had to leave my praises. Simple and so delectable. My compliments

WOW, so yummy looking! I definitely look forward to trying this after Lent! I bought a couple different premade char siew sauces and all were disgusting…something was off, but this look super easy so I look forward to trying this homemade version.❤
I've been searching for this for whole year and didn't know the name. Thank you UA-cam and thank you Noma!

What kind of roast chicken
@@alishadawn9742 the roasted kind
This looks so good, I wanna try making it myself. So much love and care were put into this dish!
I learned a good trick here:
Bubble the marinade in a saucepan... .
I always kept the marinade in the freezer (because it is a terrible thing to waste food) and sometimes I would "re-use it" by combining it into other dishes.
Which is a widdle bit dangerous.
Obviously giving it a good bubble in the sauce pan (then you can freeze it) is an excellent solution.
Thaks
Made this, deboned the chicken and everything. Best meal I’ve ever made.
Thanks!
Wow. This looks so good!
I seriously love your Char Siu chicken recipe. Great job. I hope you will make more Singaporean dishes. Singapore has some of best cuisine in the world. I have always enjoyed visiting Singapore and enjoy the various eateries.
I made it and all my family loved it thank you so much
A new thing to learn to cook for the new year. Thank you.
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THIS! I don't have an oven so I tried this by pan searing the skin side first then flipping and braising it with the remaining sauce on low simmer. Man, it is the most amazing looking chicken I've ever attempted to make so far even without the food colouring. The taste is somewhat similar to soy sauce chicken, yet the ngohiong and honey gave different hint of taste. I'll definitely put this on my recook list.
Buy a oven. It's useful long term. Butter Toast with half boil egg is delicious or ham cheese butter spread toast or just cheese butter spread toast. Lots of use. Can roast chicken, duck, char siu, roast pork, salted chicken wrap aluminium foil .....
This has texture like the rotisserie chicken at US grocery stores, I was amazed that came from my own two hands. Thanks so much for this recipe!
Cooking is fun!
I still prefer pork for this recipe

I made it yesterday and put in freezer overnight and cook it today,my husband love it so much 😁....even I just using only sweet soy sauce, oyster sauce, salt, chopped garlic, honey and white sugar only....and I grill on pan with a butter for 15-20 minutes....still delicious 😋😋😋
Thanks! this is my 1st on your channel and immediately subscribed!
The marinade looks wonderful. I will make this...and serve it with cucumber and rice, just as you do.
I don't have an oven, but I really wanted to try this so I cooked this on stovetop + did some modifications in prep and cooking method, slow fire, and OH MY GOD. Zero regrets. 'Delicious' is an understatement. the taste is nothing I have tasted before and the way the sauce clung to the chicken was just so yummy 😋 will def do this again. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Can you please share the prep and method. Even I don't have any oven.
@@nusraatmohaimin6076 i just braised the chicken in the sauce, with a little water added (1/4 cup or less) so it wont burn. Did it over low heat. I flipped the chicken parts every 15 mins for like 45 mins-1hr, then if the sauce isnt that thick, thicken it on medium fire. Of course, the final output wont entirely be the same but at least the sauce's taste is there. Perhaps using a torch can give those scorches or smth.
@@bakumidokiriyoayaoyorozush6979 thanks I will try this method!!
@@bakumidokiriyoayaoyorozush6979 you could just pan fry the ck. and make the sauce and toss ck in it.
you could boil the ck. then make sauce..chop up ck add to sauce.
soak ck in sauce for half day
cook on grill slow heat.
dont use cheap sugar
they burn black
@@rocketsmall4547 yes I did that, thank you ☺ for the sugar, well I compromise by adding a bit of water so it wont burn over the almost 1 hr cooking time I do.
Thank you so much for giving us other options for the ingredients, found them all in my house haha! Cooked this for my family and they loved it, it was a little bit charred though but everyone loved the chicken. They all said the sauce tasted like what we usually pair with peking duck, thank you again!!
I fell in love with Char Siu in Hong Kong and honestly I liked it charred a little.
Add hoisin sauce on top of this for the best umami experience.
PERFECTION!!!!! Sweet, sticky PERFECTION!!! Right up my alley, thank you!!!
From the look of how it been prepared I can see it to taste so delicious
Made the Char siew chicken with hainanese rice tonight. Really tasty, my family loved it. Sautéed some asian veg with chilli and oyster sauce to accompany the dish. Thank you for the recipe and look forward to trying more of your dishes.

Put this sauce on some ribs today, it was finger linking good! Thanks so much for this recipe!💕
One of my favourite dishes is char siu pork, with fried rice, and I have always wondered how they get that red layer on top. This looks so easy, I really want to try. Just need to hunt down a couple of the ingredients first! Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe! Happy New Year too! 😘
Traditionally, the red color comes from the use of red yeast rice. But it’s definitely not very accessible so food coloring is fine.
@@terxunng1323 that is very fancy
This recipe is EXCELLENT!
I substituted the honey with chili infused honey... only other detail I would add is that the rack in your oven needs to be closest to the top when broiling.
chili infused honey SOUNDS AMAZING!! yes, that's a great tip to get a nice crisp for this thanks!
I am going to bake rather than broil (grill).
This is the most delicious thing I’ve ever seen. Me and my mom love your channel 😁
It just looks perfect
I really like how you seasoned the chicken. I’m sure it was tasty
it is yummy and juicy! I would like to try tis menu at home for dinner instead of going out.
Made this on the BBQ today. Used the sauce to coat the chicken again 10minutes in.
Result was great. Thank you for the recipe.
Love this recipe. It looks delicious. Thank you Tracey from Austin Texas
Great recipe! I don't use oyster sauce or regular soy sauce so I substituted with about 1 tbsp of Hoisin and 2-3 tbsps of coconut amino. My meat is still marinating now but I tasted the marinade 😋 So delicious!! I can't wait till my family gets a taste of this! Thanks for the recipe!
BTW! We ate the final product and my family loved it! This will be my go too recipe for char Sui chicken from now on and it's so much easier then how I used to do it a while ago!
Who needs to eat out? When you can make something as delicious 😋 as this chicken.

I might double the marinade as I like plenty of sauce.
I'm from Philippines. I already tried this recipe of her, really taste amazing! My husband and picky son loved it!😊
妈呀!我终于可以自己做叉烧了!感谢up主!
Looks so good and juicy! I'll give this a try. The ingredients are almost the same as peking duck but fewer which is great.
Here's my experience when i tried this.
After 15 mins, the chicken had too much moisture so its was broiling, not roasted in the oven. My chicken was at uppermost rack of oven so i put it onto the lowest and had another go for 10 mins.
I poured the juices into another bowl and put it back in at the lowest rack for another 8 mins. It still didnt look cripsy enough so i increased tje temp to 220°C for another 10 and that seemed to do the trick.
I also brushed the top n bottom part of the chop with honey.
The sauce, i heated it up as per video and also added 5 birdeye chilli to temper the sweetness and make the sauce fiery.
My take is that the initial temp should be higher but maybe its just my oven🤗
@@dianalee2969 I don’t suggest following this recipe only take inspiration because her experience will be different from yours especially because she was not specific on many things
Thank you for this recipe. I have been searching the internet for an authentic char siu or sweet Asian flavored glaze for chicken, because I too don’t want to eat pork. All I could find was Americanized versions with hoisin sauce. I have been making a lot of Asian dishes lately and I have all the ingredients. Plus, I only have a toaster oven & don’t want to grill. This is exactly the recipe I needed. Thank you!! 💕❤️
I keep coming back to watch this recipe
