In the ocean they may live longer, but the max life span in captivity is about 5yrs for larger species and less for smaller species.

Yeah that tank is way too large for the octopus. It’s not that hard getting a smaller tank they are cheaper I don’t know why the owner risked hurting his octopus.

@leetlebob The difference is you have the CHOICE to leave your house whenever you want, a properly contained octopus does not, & while they are VERY good at escaping (which they often do, if they feel unhappy, they will NOT survive out of water permanently, though can survive outside for a considerable amount of time) . Octopi in captivity often commit autophagia unless they are properly mentally stimulated & given a large enough environment to live in & flourish. I kept my small octopus (Atlantic Pygmy Octopus - Octopus joubini) which was about 4 inches long, in a custom 82 gallon tank with MANY other animals. The inhabitants included live rock, live sand, soft & hard coral, sea anemones, purple gorgonians, cleaner crabs, sea snails, various fish such as tangs, false & true percale clownfish, dwarf angelfish, lemon peel nudibranchs, & some maxima clams. OBVIOUSLY ALL these animals had to be bigger than my octopus (Sally was her name) or animals that she wouldn't normally consume. In captivity they consume almost any animal smaller or slower than it, IF given the opportunity or IF they feel they have no other options. In the wild however Octopus joubini normally ONLY consume small crustaceans & mollusks.
Unless you have owned an octopus, please dont make judgements/ give advice based on what you assume is correct. They are HIGHLY intelligent, love to play, become quite energetic during the dark hours, & even sweet in disposition. They can "taste" using their arms & Sally ALWAYS came over to examine my hand & suction unto me, even if I had no food in it. She would love it when I would make custom glass puzzles that she had to open or find a way to enter so she could find a treat which in her case was her favorite food, blue legged hermit crabs & small emerald crabs. They are FAR too intelligent to consume as food. They are the smartest of ALL invertebrates & I frankly have chosen to NEVER eat another one again, same with cuttlefish...NEVER again. Squid on the other hand are quite stupid in comparison. You dont need to be a Neo liberal snowflake to have compassion for another intelligent living being. If you want to keep one as a pet, dont support the immoral & often illegal saltwater trade by buying one taken from the wild, buy one born in captivity & RESEARCH before you own one. Owning an octopus is one thing, owning a HAPPY & HEALTHY octopus is entirely another proposition. It takes dedication, care, $ & even love. NONE of my marine inhabitants have been taken from the wild. NONE. Sally lived to be 2 years & 26 days old. Thats VERY old for an octopus.

I enjoyed reading your comment, you sound like you really love & appreciate what an amazing creature they are. I could never own one, myself, but I would love the opportunity to interact with them, pity not many aquariums (here in Australia, anyway) offer that experience.
It's great to know there's caring people like yourself, who create the perfect environment for them & not just for your entertainment. Thanks for sharing

@@thegoon3088 this is literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You can leave your tiny ass apartment and do other things to occupy you. The octopus only has as much stimulus as what's in its tank. So yea a bigger tank with more stimulus would be much more ideal. They are very smart and will kill themselves if they are bored.

You need more toys man, Octopus get bored easily and if you don't keep them entertained they will eat themselves and stress to death. That tank is too baren for a hyper intelligent animal. Needs tubes, shells, maybe even toddler toys that aren't dangerous to her.

Jordan Mcdaniel not necessarily as you don't need to be born in a closet to think a closet is a small space, I won't go into to much detail as I don't know much but typically a Octopus in captivity needs a huge amount of space(obviously depending on the species) some needing above 500 gallons as a minimum tank size.

Octopi need things to keep their minds occupied. They enjoy toys and just about any novel item will be seen as a toy. They especially like puzzles. Something that challenges their mind to open or get into for example. An octopus in a basic decorated tank is not a happy octopus.

Number 1 rule for having a pet octopus in home aquariums is make sure the lid is on top of the aquarium because octopuses are escape artists.

Wow, Tony, this is incredible! You've made such a terrific video. I have heard that octopus can crawl out of their tank and go over to another tank and eat the fish out of the other tank. The only way the owner knew what happened was by the trail of water and the missing fish! Again, great video Tony!

to the ppl commenting about how they should be free look at it this way. the octopus is better off here than it was wherever he bought it. theres a store that sells them a half hour from my house and in the store the octopus is kept in a small thing within a bigger tank so its always fighting to get out.
