Jared I have watched a lot of videos concerning the R5, R6, and RF lens reviews. I rented the R6 and lense adapter, was totally blown away with its performance with EF glass. I have not seen a single review on the crop capabilities of these two cameras on any type of glass. I would like to see a review of the pro’s and con’s of using the built in crop factor of these camera’s with various glass. Take the RF 100-500, it would become a 112-800mm using the 1.6x crop. Both photos looked outstanding, of course the cropped factor appeared closer and when I cropped the full frame photo to the same approximate size I lost some sharpness. The thing that blew my mind was the ISO, aperture, and shutter speeds were identical for both photos!
That’s comparing digital to optical magnification. The glass extender is going to give you better results than just cropping in on the image which is what crop mode is giving you.
Coming from MFT, Canon made the right choice for an extending barrel and balanced aperture vs zoom range. Brilliant lens! Packs down nicely in a bag, offers balanced performance and with 1.6 crops mode on the R5 offers even more reach (especially for video).

thanks for this basic review. I liked it. Since I'm still a photography-greenhorn, I have to check if there are reviews of comparable lenses from other manufacturers. I would rather get warm to an all-rounder. A well-deserved thumb for this review!
The 100-400 has the Smooth-Tighten thing to. Very handy! It is for the thing you seconds before shown, so that the lens doesn't move out of it's own in zooming stuff. Also, I do use the MF function sometimes, because when the subject is far away and fast as hell and you don't have the fast camera focussing you need and/or even worse it's dark, or you are a bit inexperienced (even after 10 year, I am still a noob, yes I suck). It can just be that moment you can sharpen the picture to your own liking, or just do have that shot you've wanted instead of missing it. Oh and a filter, I've bought, because of the protecting. You have L-lens gear, not something you can buy yet again. So any extra protection you gonna get is one. Also, I've shoot with the lens sometimes in conditions where the lens can get dirty, so not needing to have to clean the lens professionally but just get the uv-filter out of the way, helps a lot xD Though both are me being noob more, then actually making sence. I just wanted to explain why someone would use it even if it feels/looks/is weird to do so.
Given the basil kit lens with EOS R 5/6 is the 24-105, then you take the 100-500 and you get the full range from 24 to 500mm focal lenght with just two lenses, wich makes it unusual since usialy it is more 100-400 and 150-500, despite there was a 50-500mm lens niknamed sigmonster because it was especially big and heavy. Plus a large aperture/fast prime and you got your trinity going up to supertele instead of placing the usual 70-200 as the tele! Of course, if you want F2.8 aperture you may still need the 70-200, but still it gives quite a range.
I'm considering this lens to go along with the 24-105 f4 rf is. I know it's not cheap but for the range it can handle it's a bargain compared to the other glass at $10k+.
Hi Jared, Videotime 3:36 => On the Canon EF 35-350mm - F3.5-5.6 , there was already the same system ring "smooth-tighten". This was introduced around 1992... Super telephoto zoom lens with a 10x zoom ratio! High image quality is maintained. Ideal for sports and documentary photography when you need to change the framing often. The zoom adjustment ring lets you adjust the zoom torque to your liking.
How are you folks compensating for the variable f/stops? I do shoot in M with my R6, but that’s a lot of messing about to get the exposure correct. Meaning you shoot at 232mm at 5.6, 1250 @800 (or whatever) then immediately zoom out to 500mm, the lens will automatically put you at 7.1, but you still wanna/need to shoot at 1250th (which will obviously under expose), do y’all adjust the ISO and brave the potential noise? Or do y’all shoot in another mode like shutter priority/aperture priority? I’m just tryna to understand how if you’re having to fight with a variable f/stop, how do you keep from messing about with any rotating dials and NOT miss a shot?
QUESTION! I don’t know where else to post this. Why has the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro increased in price lately? I’ve been eyeballing it for the longest time as my first lens into the “L“ world at a relatively affordable price. I remember it being around $800 a few months ago. It’s $1299 on most online stores now!
Is this really worth the price compared to the Tamron or Sigma 150-600mm? They're faster, have longer reach and are a lot cheaper. You would need the adapter though, but hopefully they'll make RF versions at some point.
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the Sigma on my R5. Hard to say how much better this is for 3x the price. I suspect the image quality is better but... AF works fine on the Sigma, but again I can't compare them.
@@RichFreeman Same. I run the Sigma Contemporary now on my new R6. I can also use the ef1.4 &ef2x extenders on it. I don't have another trunk full of money for the RF1-5 to test, but I'll go ahead and assume that it will probably focus faster than the Bigma and the RF's IS~ IBIS may have some advantage, but the Bigma is pretty damned good on the R and the R6 and no adapter needed, just more compact overall. It looks like the RF would offer four advantages for my use that I can spot from here: (1. smaller even extended (2" shorter closed) (2. one whole pound lighter. (3. weather sealed (4. much shorter (3') minimum focus distance. near Macro ability.
So this has absolutely nothing to do with this lens at all, but just wondering if there was a mirrorless camera you'd suggest for low light city photography? I'm looking at things like the X-T3, Nikon Z6 II, Sony A7iii, etc. What would you suggest? Mirrorless is a must.
How good would this lens be for action sports? I assume would need a better camera that could handle high ISO as can't shoot wide open at F2.8 for example?
3:34 the EF 100-400 II has the same thing. Fine tune zooming. Like in on animals. And of course the lens doesn’t flop out. Found it very helpful in africa on safari.
just got the r6 and have the 24-70 f2.8 on backorder. What would all you recommend - this lens or the rf 70-200 f2.8? I am an "enthusiast" and my typical shots are of sporting events (soccer, baseball, gymnastics) and nature. Not sure whether or not I should go for the wider aperture or the extra zoom. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hey Jared! Thoughts on something like this over adapting something like a 500f/4 or older 600f/4? I find old used versions for comparable prices to this lens all the time
Thanks Jarrod. I am a keen bird photographer and am considering a new lens and body. Can you compare this 100-500 lens to the canon 800mm f11? Which of the two is better suited for bird photography? Thanks
I have the 800mm fll and am waiting on the 100-500. I was out shooting with the 800mm tonight, out in the bush. I love how light it is. But... I have been reliably told the R5 + 100-500 is a magic combo.
I had issues with the autofocus of the r6 and this lens in the snow today. The snow flakes were unusually large for this area but that's the only issue I've had in the month I've had the lens.
Crunch time soon. So what I hear you saying is, with what is on the market today, the best option would be to stick with my EF 1.4x,2x and go with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM? Correct me if wrong: 400mm f/5.6 + 2xconv = 800mm x 1.4xconv = 1120mm f/16? Is that about it? Did I forget to add an extension tube for the R5? I just returned an EF 100-400 to Canon after borrowing it. I don't see any problem at all sloshing the extra gear on the lens to increase distance. Mid-day really isn't a problem with that high an f-stop, especially when combined with auto ISO. I definitely preferred shutter speed. I hope the RF 1-00-500 isn't the best or last telephoto they make for the R mount.

In this video, and other videos that you have done, you make a point to make sure that you switch from animal eye AF to people eye AF depending on the situation. Canon does offer the option of “no priority”, instead of people or animal, it doesn’t seem that anyone has tested out this mode (I believe there are a couple of other R5 or R6 videos floating around UA-cam…). I wonder if you have it set to no priority, it would detect both people and animals alike and then you wouldn’t have to be so concerned when you are in the eye AF tracking mode.

grams, and KIlos, and I'm a brit, we invented the imperial system. I thought there would have been some sort if revolt in the US by now!
Very good for far objects to capture them perfectly without disturbing the object.
The Sony 100-400 gm lens has the smooth - tight feature too.
As well as the canon EF 100-400mm mark ii lol.
@@wintereater I've been using MK 1 for 10 years now and it still works great. Happily found out how to use the ring right after i bought it, and now I share my knowledge :D
This is some of the best stills I’ve seen from Jared artistically speaking beautiful composition
Just got it it’s the best lens I have so far
Why has UA-cam removed you from my recommended??? I thought you retired from doing YT content until I actively sought your channel out. I’ve been subscribed and notified for at least 3 or 4 years. UA-cam has suppressed your content from me.
UA-cam algorithm works in a way that even if you are subscriber to a channel if you see few video of the channel it stop from showing it on the recommended.
The 100-400 EF has that ring to tighten/smooth it.
the sony e also
EF version has better build quality imo
I have the 100-400 EF and still rock it on my ancient 5D MkIV..
Thanks a bunch for your vibrant videos.
Could you please try the lens on Canon EOS R7 and let us know about the combo for wildlife shooting? IMO, this could be the lightest rig for that genre!
Exactly the combo I’ve been thinking about.
I use Uv filter, but not for uv protection, its to protect my expensive Polarizer when in deep forest, branches and other things scratch the lens quick.
Recently i bought this Quick fitting silicon things for jars 3$ and it works perfect as protection, Quick on and off.
Lens looks fun, but also really highlights how intriguing Nikon’s 70-200 f2.8 is, being that it can accept teleconverters.
Being able to turn that glass into a 140-400 f5.6 on the spot is really quite brilliant.
I do that with the Fujifilm XF 50-140 F2.8 💯
That's the exact reason why I chose the Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 IS III for EOS R instead of the new RF 70-200 which can't accept teleconverters
@@fredericchopin1667 I'm really looking forward to finding out myself. Haven't had much to shoot this year, so investing in a $2600 lens hasn't been a priority. But I just love the 24-70mm f2.8 and haven't experienced the focus issues purported on this channel. I enjoy Jared's content, but I just don't shoot like he does. Shooting erratic subjects entirely in auto with eye-AF just isn't a real-life shooting scenario for me.
@@tomiman89 so your set up requires an adaptor+TC seems a bit of a faff to me. How is that working out for you? I’m looking for a 500-600 for the EOS R
Hey Jared, thank you for reviewing the lens. Would please advise which are the good bags that can be used to carry this lens with r7 body and an extra 100mm lens.
I love how he actually called out paintball tournaments.. I'm seriously picking this up for that specific use case. My 70-200 only cuts it some of the time.
Considering this for baseball and soccer. Most, if not all of our college games are in the daylight. Did you try it out this season at a Phillies game?
love the Rob Thomas reference
What is the best alternative for under $1,500 ?
You see the Smooth and tighten ring on the EF 100-400 L lense also. Also the lense hood have little door for filters. So it is not new to the RF 100-500.
lens collar, always stays on my long glass, as I use it for the belt mount for my spider system. it's very helpful. A good review though, certainly one to look out for.
thanks for this basic review.
Also, I've shoot with the lens sometimes in conditions where the lens can get dirty, so not needing to have to clean the lens professionally but just get the uv-filter out of the way, helps a lot xD
Though both are me being noob more, then actually making sence.
I couldn't help but replay Jim Carreys rendition (in my head) of the fight to the death music from Star Trek in The Cable Guy.
I have Eos R and now bought the 100-500 - should I upgrade to Eos R6 or R5? Or is the R good enough for this lens?
Can you upload the raw photos of the R5 and R6 so that we can better view them on our computer?
Smells like a whispering eye?? I am very concerned about Jared’s love life. But, I am more concerned for his gear.
Jared "let me jump in real quick" Polin
I'm currently using a first gen EF 100-400 on my new R6. I can't wait to see how this lens compares. Just gotta pick up a few more jobs first lol.
Isnt the Sony 200-600mm just a better version of this lens? Or am I missing out on something
you are the first and only person I've ever heard use the word "Embiggen" LOL I love it.
Love the videos. I especially like the ones where you are actually on a shoot explaining. Like the one of the Levine shoot.
Hello Jared is it a great lens than SONY 200-600 G.
? You mentioned its a nice Combination with the R6. If you had a choose one other RF lens in your set up, what would it be... thank you
Can't wait to rent one of these for a day out shooting at the safari, it looks like it's going to be the perfect compliment to the 24-105mm.
I patiently waited for this video since the announcement of this lens. Thanks
Fro your the best i love your vids man!!
For landscape is EOS R5 for sure.
3:34 the EF 100-400 II has the same thing. Fine tune zooming. Like in on animals. And of course the lens doesn’t flop out. Found it very helpful in africa on safari.
I have Canon RP camera, will this fit?
How about the new rf 100-400 ?
Can you do a review on the rf 70-200 f4?
will you release full coverage of the renaissance fair like last time??
Are there any budget friendly lenses you would recommend for a comin rebel 7i for a safari to Africa??
Nice video!! Is this lens best for landscape photography?
just got the r6 and have the 24-70 f2.8 on backorder. What would all you recommend - this lens or the rf 70-200 f2.8? I am an "enthusiast" and my typical shots are of sporting events (soccer, baseball, gymnastics) and nature. Not sure whether or not I should go for the wider aperture or the extra zoom. Any advice would be appreciated.
great photos and such a bad ass lens
Hey Jared! Thoughts on something like this over adapting something like a 500f/4 or older 600f/4? I find old used versions for comparable prices to this lens all the time
I can't believe my eyes... A Minotaaaauuur!
You do not recommend putting filter threads on anything?
I use my lens mount to attach my sling ad not to the camera, I understood that was better for weight distribution. Have I been doing it wrong?
It seems that everyone else says don't attach your strap to the camera with a long lens, it makes sense, but does Jarid know something we don't?
So, how do you get this lens????? No one seems to have any idea when it may be available.
F A N T A S T I C done job one more time, Jared!
Will you do a review for the new RF 50mm 1.8 ?
Great review
There is a RF 100-400mm now
You are the best on what you do
Jared the smooth/tight ring is for the lens creep, just wondering why canon didn’t go with a switch instead 🤔
Wow! What a nice zoom range that canon is offering. Definitely looking to pick this up
Thinking about grabbing this one or the 70-200mm. So many options.
Jared…. Quick question. Your opinion on my next lens. I have an eosR and like to do natureAnd some portraits. For my next lens I’m looking for either 70-200 f2.8 or better reach 100-500 variable and there is nothing else in between. Is the reach of one outweighs the aperture of the other. The price is close but I don’t know. Maybe you can do a comparison with cons and pros. I can not purchase both Thanks
What you can do is rent first and see if it does what you need.
Manual focusing is useful for wildlife if you're in dense environment.
Hey Jared!! Why no UV filters? Especially wildlife photographers it seems very risky
Thax sir for providing this much info to us😇
fyi if you are trying to download the raw files, I was only able to do it on Safari and not Chrome.
