  • The traffic pattern is probably the most common procedure you need to learn. Not only is it the preferred method of leaving and entering the area near an airfield, it is also hugely useful in training takeoffs, landings and general aircraft control.

Just getting into X Plane and I've never flown anything before. This was an excellent easy to follow guide to traffic pattern for a complete beginner. Really appreciate tips such as aligning the compass to the runway and how its ok for your altitude to be off 100 feet or so. The diagram is great to refer to as I practice too. Really helpful, thanks.

Great video. I saw this video by flying the pattern and my instructor was amazed about how I controlled the plane and my knowledge of the TPA rules

Great video! Loved your explanation of the treardrop entry into the pattern.

Very nice video, and I immensely appreciate the pattern graphic. I'm a big fan of pictures, and love the fact that you have known power settings included. Not to split hairs, but realize that the turn to crosswind should normally be delayed until 300' below TPA (in this case, 700' AGL). The 500 fpm vertical speed looks a bit steep, too. With a 1 NM offset and flying at 70 kts, you'll spend just under 2 min descending before turning to final. That means you'll lose almost 1000' prior to establishing yourself on final. I think the 5x rule of thumb would work better--multiply your groundspeed by five, and establish that rate of descent. Thanks again for making this video!

superb video. Most comprehensive explanation and demonstration of the TP that I've seen yet as I learn to fly. Thanks for making this entire series.

Is 172 x-plane fuel injection? If not you forgot carb heat.
    Good post though.

Is it useful to practice slow flight in the simulator? Seems like the kind of thing that might be hard to match with real life

Really useful video! Thank you a lot, friend. I'm not a native english speaker. Could you explain once again next question. If I want to do a downwind departure, what should I do? Should I maintain traffic pattern altitude while I'm on the downwind leg? Or am I allowed to climb to my cruise altitude on downwind leg?
Thank you in advance. Have a nice flight :)

You can climb out of a traffic pattern wherever you want because you are leaving the busy traffic below you. Of course in real life you would announce that on the CTAF to be sure there is nobody above you.

Keep in mind that traffic overflying the airfield (from the non-pattern side to enter in the pattern from a 45) will typically overfly 500' above the TPA. Climbing on the downwind could put you co-altitude--don't assume other traffic heard your radio call. Recommended departures are straight out or 45 degree turn (in same direction as pattern only, not left or right). Reference AIM for specifics. If you do wish to depart on the downwind, it's probably not a bad idea to stick with TPA until at least abeam the numbers.

You notify ATC your intended direction (north, South, east or west). They usually give you instructions to clear their airport. Depending on airport you can't just start climbing. If you're in the U.S your airport might be under the airspace of another airport like a Bravo.
