@@joshi897everyone keeps saying this and yet have zero suggestions of what that app will be, as if apps are just naturally occurring. It really feels like cope when people say this.
One of the few perks of Tik Tok getting banned is that music may finally get out of the making "viral" under 3 minute song trend that has been a plague for years now. While I don't like Tik Tok personally, I do feel bad for people that would be loosing their job over this
In the 50s and 60s; pop songs were notoriously short and was usually under 3minutes. You’re looking at the epics by those artists that sustained a big career, an anomaly; Like the Led Zeppelin’s and Queens. Usually a bop is supposed to be a short song. Thats why Punk influenced songs hits the mark so well. It’s short and to the point. It’s not new that the industry wants short songs as the public usually won’t give the time of day for a small act over 3minutes. However this under 3 minutes format makes way for over saturation
They'll be fine. Vine was poppin, got shut down, and then TikTok came around. As long as there is a significant demand for something, the market will seek to fulfill and make profit off of that demand. There will be a new TikTok for them to flock to
Vine got shut down because it wasn't lucrative, tik tok is getting banned because of the government due to americans being insecure that their products are being beaten by China. There will always be another app to brainrot american children, thankfully. The us is too damned of a country to have an intelligent population.
@princessm6355 tiktok is the number one app to make a comfortable living off 1 min videos, where everyone saw world news, you type in what you're looking for and a bunch of videos show up straight to that point. No other app has that
it’s definitely a problem that a large portion of peoples identities is based around one app. i’m 25 lol, if we really NEED tiktok for “money”, a sense of “freedom”, etc… that’s the problem, not tiktok itself! love ya vids lol
Yeah, honestly. Switch to different platforms. Make your own platform if you have the skills necessary. Tbh. I don't really agree with the ban but it is due to how much it is slippery-slope to other restrictions and bans. Not because of the TikTok itself.
I’m gen Z (02) and I haven’t had TikTok for the last month, I re-download it for New Year’s Eve but I had a scroll for a bit and I realised I was missing out on nothing and I was bored, so I deleted it within 30 minutes. I spend more time on Pinterest and UA-cam.
I am 01, I downloaded it once for 15 minutes a few years ago and I was like - there is no way I am going to allow my brain to rot from this. I deleted it and never went back!
Literally same, I feel we have moved past the need for TikTok honestly it’s not as amazing as ppl say I think it is killing literacy so bad so im happy if it goes
Idc it can go. Iv watched it rot the brain of literally everyone around me. Ppl got the attention span of a spoon nowadays. TikTok plays a large part in that. It’s needed to go.
There is so much low effort content on there, and it seems like it takes very little to go viral. A bunch of the same bits done exactly the same by different people. I am unbothered, and my reasons for being ok with this have nothing to do with data.
It’s also a blatant disregard of the will of the people. The only reason it’s being censored it’s because it’s showing real time primary sources of the genocides happening overseas that are funded by the US
As a teacher, I wholeheartedly agree!!! These kids are ADDICTED to that app. It's also destroying their mental health before my eyes. Parents don't regulate or educate their kids about healthy usage.
i think he’s just trying to express that tiktok is the first social media app that gen z got to define/make their own since they were the target demographic when it first launched. same as millennials were able to do with instagram. and as a gen z-er myself i agree!
@@lmaoemmi True I get that. But even so, if this was the mid-2010s and Instagram was on the verge of getting shut down, I don't think us millennials would have freaked out as much cause the app didn't really define us. The internet was a secondary life experience to us, whereas to y'all, it's the main life experience.
the thing about tik tok was it pushed so many bad trends, helped glorify and make over consumption worse, worsened the new generations attention, and gave weird people their soapbox and spread their hot takes, its not bad since so many small businesses got their starts and helped people find a job they actually like but personally the negatives out way the positives
Instagram Reels is full of bullies, racists, and facists. Would you like to ban that too? Or would you like to keep pretending that TikTok is the root of all evil so you can, ironically, stand on *your* soapbox? Unbelievable that you people are perfectly fine with being censored and moderated in your personal lives by old withering politicians that don’t care about you.
Definitely disagree in terms of entertainment and cultural identity but I suppose in terms of addiction to dopamine and instant gratification you're correct
Nah we Gen Z arent gonna give up our Social Media that easy. If anything, my generation might even start a revolt just to unban it. I know that highly unlikely, but it is a possibility.
It is crazy to me that this is the issue America is focusing on. It is funny how people use TikTok and GenZ as a scapegoat. As if we are the problem for a lot of today’s issues.
Creators would be fine having to get real jobs and ceasing to contribute to collective brainrot. Just jumping apps as if banning TikTok has no merit worth considering is incredibly short-sighted and I hope everyone who tries to do so fails.
Not at all, a lot of tiktok creators are based around short form content; even if they were to switch over to youtube, yt doesnt promote short form cuz they cant put as many ads in it.
girll they will not be a little tik tok career is much easier than youtube. UA-cam does not allow for 6seconds of ass shaking then boom your famous. 1 million followers on tiktok is not equal to 1 million subscribers on UA-cam. UA-cam requires at least 10 on commnetary. People expect cited evidence, good editing, pictures, and compelling topics on a regular schedule. A UA-cam can do tiktok easy but a Tiktoker can not become a UA-camr easily.
I'm not mourning cuz as a teacher I've seen how TikTok has messed up many of my students. Heck, it messed me up before I deleted it. Good riddance. Now we can touch grass!
I deleted it because it quite literally felt like it was killing me. I hated myself bc for some reason everyone on TikTok was always perfect, polished, had their lives together and was drop dead gorgeous. With how much filters and editing softwares, and makeup techniques have advanced? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that when I go outside the the grocery store, or the airport that I don’t see even FIVE PEOPLE as flawless as the ones on TikTok. Live in the real world, and base your standards of what you see when you go places like the beach or the gym. Nothing is perfect. My confidence is slowly creeping up and I’m learning to be kinder to myself and set my own standards
4:25 I am on that side of “yeah get rid of it” because tik tok was fundamental in the shift in morality when it comes to consumerism and how everyone nowadays is hyper focused on their flaws because they’re looking at themselves so much and receiving so much input that we as humans were never mentally prepared to intake this is me but I have given up most socials last year and it has done wonders for my mental health
@Serocco …do you think that that information was only available on tiktok? an app that made the word “un-alive” popular because saying dead was already crossing a line on there?
@@Seroccothat is the real reason it’s being banned. It’s not some conspiracy it’s genuinely how the idea started from pro-Israel groups who didn’t like that our generation ‘favoured’ Palestine
@@campana6056 Well mention of the happenings in the Gaza was exponentially higher than other social media platforms, but I get your point. It's not the only place but it still was a large platform for disseminating the information.
For us non-Americans who aren't affected by the ban, I doubt it will be the death of GenZ media/culture. In America, maybe, but TikTok will likely flourish in other countries and continue to contribute to our "culture."
@llaniii ehh those spots will probably just be taken over by new non-American creators. I do agree that the ban likely isn't as serious for our "culture" as people make it seem considering like... Other countries exist 😭
I feel that I get most of my shorts and more from UA-cam and Instagram. While I feel that there will be a hole from the lack of TikTok, the hole won’t be endless.
The thing is that most Instagram/UA-cam reals are original made and posted to TikTok and then uploaded to other platforms sometimes weeks later. UA-cam/Instagram have been old news for years now
Facebook and Instagram? Both owned by Mark Zuckerberg haha. I'm sure he would be happy when everyone has to go back to his platforms. Disgusting!!!! I do recall when tiktok was the fastest growing platform and was leaving Instagram and Facebook in the dust!!!! I bet Mark was so mad!!! Mad enough to try to make tik Tok illegal.
The truth is if tiktok gets banned the community and it’s local alderman’s need to create a third party area where gen z and other generations can communicate with each other. With everything becoming so COSTLY there needs to be more free outings that absolutely do not involve technology and MONEY when everything is so costly as it is.
Talking to people your age on Reddit, forums, and even in real life IS free: it just requires effort and actual social interaction. But I guess that's too much to ask
@Eze-j3pIf an entire generations collective identity can be shaped, controlled, and determined by a single tech product, then yes it's a dig, because that is not a healthy way of life for ANY human being
I hope it does get banned to be honest. And people who are addicts to TikTok don’t like that. It’s bad for your mental health, just another social media app that depletes your attention span, misinforms people on very crucial topics and encourages harmful trends like the minion gore.
I've been waiting for it to be banned for a long time, there's too much horrible stuff and sure youtube has it's own problems and uh...nasty content that either is pushed to kids or you actually have to search for it, Tiktok is just worse and your data is being sent overseas too so it is Spyware.
@@ParadiseLordRyu yeah, but it is most rampant on Tiktok (and Facebook, but some of the dinosaurs that still use it are also in office, so it's not going anywhere).
@@ParadiseLordRyu fr, like every app has its con, but be forreal Americans carry the app in trends and entertainment for most of the other world. And I'm saying this as an Jamaican. I can admit that, losing that app from western creators is like losing data on all the things they popularised. I like cosplayers, ballet, haircare tuts and so much more are usually posted by Americans, they're the only one that would actually interact with other users to answer.
I think a lot of people are anti-TikTok in general because of the extreme addictive nature, but every app has "shorts" now so...I think it's really too late for banning it to make a huge difference. It might help a little tho 'cause at least it's only a _part_ of those apps. But if they really cared about privacy, they would've introduced data tracking laws, but they don't want it to affect _them_ . I am concerned for the people making a living on TikTok, but at the same time I'm sure they'll probably just swap apps to UA-cam or Instagram
The real reason for them wanting to ban TikTok (which is why other countries have ban it) is because their terms of service state that all user data must be handed over to the Chinese Communist Party (they government officials). We have no idea what their government will do with our data and they refuse to tell us.
My biggest fear with the tiktok ban is that I won't be able to find new music anymore. I've found so many underground and popular artists and songs that are now my favorites ONLY through tiktok. Tiktok is great for new artists putting themselves out there and for consumers to find new music. spotify recommendations and instagram/youtube recommendation just doesn't hit the same
for me, i hate the app, the interface, the brainrot, how it ruined the way we consume pop music, consumerism and trends, etc, but if there's one thing that is worse than all the things i could list why i hate the app is the censorship of it being taken away. at the end of the day, i don't have to use it but censorship will always be the worser option.
I deadass prepared myself for it to go away by setting a 30-60 minute limit for it and most social media apps, I’m fully prepared to leave mEtA and all the other shit if it goes
meta has also announced they’re adding AI accounts to mimic users to their apps soon so i have a feeling the quality of interaction on their apps is about to tank too
@@StrawDogsPu lmao my thoughts exactly. other than the fact they want to use their own AI for something, i don’t see what the benefit is supposed to be. none of their users are going to get value out of it and their advertisers will be advertising to bots. i GUESS if the AI itself is doing the advertising then maybe its a new form of ads? but no user is going to enjoy even more ads on the platform and in a sneakier format (even more closely replicating user created content).
im sad for everyone who does have tiktok and uses it for good like their buisnesses, for friends, etc and the effect it will have on many after it's ban, but im not gonna lie....if UA-cam gets banned, and i lose commentary videos like this, i'm gonna start tweaking
I can see the argument when people say to just use UA-cam shorts or Instagram reels, but the algorithm truly is not the same. I get way more interesting, thoughtful, and funny content through TikTok. I feel like it provides a mixture of content, whereas Instagram or UA-cam’s content is more homogeneous.
That’s interesting my content was full of people promoting ED’s, glamorizing depression and su*cide, and calling people ugly/cyber bullying. 🤔 I never searched or engaged with any of these topics.
Honestly the other platforms require more work to gain a wider audience, so I see their issue. However, I don't think people should be making a living on low effort content which is the bulk of what TikTok has to offer.
@@bryanna4548 I get that, but people do make money off of TikTok. Whether it is low effort content or not, it still is people's livelihood and it sucks that they would be losing that.
@Eze-j3pit’s the same as when Vine died, most of the big names on UA-cam now started there and made the transition here. Lots weren’t as successful, but maybe the chances are bigger now with Instagram being another alternative
I’m 27 and a licensed therapist. I’m all for this ban and I’m excited to see the positive impacts of this. Not to diminish your concerns, but I have seen first hand how TikTok has negatively impacted self esteem, attention spans, and individualism. I personally deleted the app years ago and have felt my concentration and connection to others significantly improve. On the contrary, I’ve also seen people my age who haven’t stepped away continue to struggle with these very things. I guess only time will tell but I think this is a move in the right direction.
You're definitely a right-wing boomer who's bitter about the radical change TikTok created. Women not relying on men anymore and going solo is exactly what boomers demonise as 'individualism'. Why do people like you have to demonise the fact that some of us have just found peace and empowerment in life?
Democratic countries dont just ban apps. If a national security concerns was an actual issue, it would not be just tiktok. If you feel like those are valid reasons to ban tiktok, you may as well fully support the ban of many others social medias. Tiktok helped so many people to make communities, share valuable info or make their small businesses more visible. This is just plain old censorship. But I dont think many of Americans are aware of that this is not okay.
@@posmissndee The term individualism is thrown around so much nowadays. It's not normal to be so bothered by people, specifically women, who are self sufficient and don't feel the need to rely on others constantly
Hot take: the kind of people who watch video essays like this for entertainment are probably going to be more aware of the negative effects of Tik tok and the content it incentivizes and therefore see the fact that the platform is the main source of young adult culture as a problem
TikTok has absolutely ravaged this generation. Politics aside. This generation does nothing for love, only for likes. Far too many people have made too much money and become too famous for far too little work. We glorify, celebrate, and enrich "creators", who have ultimately done nothing to contribute to the progression of society. The level of self isolation coupled with intense narcissism in this generation is palpable in the groups preceeding and suceeded it. An entire generation has spent their lives with their eyes glued to their phones, and is missing everything life has to offer as it passes by unnoticed. The brainless content mixed with intense opinions on information with shaky foundations is tearing away the ability to think for one's self. The platform has devastated peoples' ability to develop genuine connections, decreased attention spans and information retention, and removed the prospect of gratification, as nothing is ever enough, and there always needs to be more. More likes. More content. More videos. More comments. It has spread a false narrative of what normal life looks like, feeding a festering sensation of inadequacy, depression, and loneliness in millions of teens. Eventually, this generation will be in charge of the world. One day, they will look up from their screens and realize no one knows how to do anything anymore. I dont care about the political side of things, or what country has what interests in the intellectual property, or the constitutional conundrum a ban would make. Ultimately, TikTok, and for that matter all forms of short media, is the most devastating plague to sweep over mankind since the Black Death, and poses the greatest existential threat to humanity's ability to progress. Welcome to the end of my rant. Enjoy the rest of your scroll through the comments section.
When you say TikTok has 'ravaged' this generation, what you really mean is that it helped create radical social change and white men hate that. It helped the right people find community, especially minorities such as women, queer people and colour for whom other platforms have been hostile and unsafe. It brought women in particular together and helped them to hold men accountable. That's why they took Twitter and that's why they're coming for TikTok. Regarding your grudge against people making money from it, your mindset is similar to the billionaire class who are trying to force people to go back to working dead-end jobs that they don't want to do any more. People are making more money than they ever would have at one of these exploitative 9-to-5s and they're actually able to live life comfortably. If that makes you so angry then I'd say take a long hard look at yourself.
I can't imagine being so personally invested in how others are making a living. Anything is better than being homeless right? Some people have been able to use all these platforms to buy a nice house, fund their kids education. Who cares if they're not working a traditional job serving companies that are only interested in using us for their profit?
I’m kinda sad TikTok is getting banned this month. I know the app has problems but it allowed me to meet so many fellow cosplayers. I’ve been trying to go through all my drafts and post them here because I really don’t want to lose all the time and effort I put into my cosplay content 😔
@ I still have the memories and enjoy doing the hobby. The reason I bring this up is because I have a lot of out of state and international mutals, a good quarter of them only use TikTok and don’t want to use another platform so I risk losing those mutals. On top of that I put a lot of time and effort into my cosplays and TikTok was my short form archive so if I miss downloading any of my videos I will lose them forever when the app stops updating. It’s not about clout, it’s about archiving and meeting other fans of the media I cosplay from.
@@scottbuck1572why are you assuming bc they like to document their cosplays that they only do it for that purpose.. it’s almost as if ppl can genuinely enjoy their hobbies and post about it. You guys are so insufferable when it comes to technology. Memories don’t actually last forever
@@aaliyahstark7948 And neither does technology; literally EVERYTHING eventually will decay to a point of being unrecognizable. If your joy in doing something is contingent on a false idea of it being forever, you need to reevaluate your relationship with our inherently ephemeral existence. My point is not that it is pointless to take pictures or videos, but rather the connections you made and community you have built STILL exists, even if it requires much more work and is no longer algorithmically dropped at your feet
@@scottbuck1572comment flew over your head. I am happy this app is getting banned but cosplay is not a hobby that most or majority of people dabble in, like makeup or gaming is. Cosplay is a specific niche and I personally have only met one person IRL who did it. And she was a stranger not a friend. People have a right to be sad that an app they got friends on is being banned bc it was the beginning of something good for them. That wasn’t my experience and I hate the app so Idrc but everyone doesn’t feel that way
as the opposition, i think that a lot of us also are getting older and have less time to spend online. i think the social media bubble is busting and we are finding out that it is not as great as it was when it was pushed to us. in a couple months I'm only going to have Instagram and x and if x keeps being the way that it is then i will delete it too. I have got rid of tiktok, and next up is snapchat which i am getting rid of when i graduate
honestly i think social media has its upsides but most if not all of them have been corroded as these companies put making money before the actual user experience & safety. social media is soo different now compared to like 10 years ago
This less time online phenomenon has already been happening with milennials. We rarely post on social media nowadays unless we’re on vacation or have a big life announcement lol
I feel like people in this comment section aren't as empathetic as they should mainly regarding those who make money from TikTok. Yes I understand that a lot of the content on there is low effort, but that is still their livelihoods you know. That livelihood that they are about to lose.
Most content creators have placed their content on multiple other platforms like UA-cam shorts, Instagram reels and/or Facebook reels so a lot of them should be fine
Right like there are small buissness that make all their money on tiktok, it's gonna be harder for them to get an audience on insta or UA-cam because its just not the same algo
i get that, but the bad outweighs the good. If you have a whole generation who are losing their ability to concentrate and think for themselves, how will we be able to progress in the future?
It's all bitter boomers in the comments and some millennials. It's the same kind of shame as is put on Only Fans creators. Why should they care that someone makes money easily? Why do these people want people to struggle so bad just because they did?
@@VexxieShadowI’m sorry, but if OnlyFans is the first thing that comes to mind with this, you might need a breather. There are also dozens of Gen-Z (ers?) here.
I think it’s fair to regulate the app, I absolutely hate the live page. it’s such a spectrum of stuff that is not appropriate for all age groups ie people in foreign countries, being weird people begging inappropriate shit . If it’s possible to regulate what is seen , then this could make TikTok more productive. A lot of americas issues is that we done monitor / regulate what children have access too.
the regulation is seriously the biggest problem! so many people are being exposed to inappropriate or uncomfortable (if not straight up criminal) stuff because they just can’t moderate it all (without paying people to do that safely and for a living wage)
Douyin doesn't have that problem, it's only the western "TikTok" that has that problem because that's what it was programmed to do. There's a good reason why it's going away.
I deleted TikTok back in June and have been so much happier since I did so. I hate to sound like a blonde, middle-aged Karen, but I do often say now that, yeah, the poor mental state of society as a whole is slowly becoming due to “that damn phone.” Especially for kids and teens, our brains can and often are shaped by our surroundings, and that includes the content that we consume on social media. And don’t even get me started on how TikTok has become, in a sense, an odd kind of news outlet. That was the last straw for me due to how the information passed around on TikTok is so heavily biased, often only half-truths, or not factually based truth whatsoever. (That goes for all sides of the political spectrum, might I add) We don’t need Tiktok. We never did. It just became so very popular during and after COVID (for obvious reasons) and I feel as though we never recovered from the sort of online identities that we created for ourselves. Social media as a whole has created some of the worst political and opinionated extremes that we’ve seen in a long while, and I cannot reiterate just how unhealthy that is for us as a society. The youtube channel kurzgesagt actually made a very informative video on how social media has negatively affected society, and I think everyone should check it out when they get a chance. It’s titled: “Social Media is Worse Than Ever - Now What?” For those wondering.
"That damn phone" is the reason Syria ultimately overthrew their 50 year long dictatorship. It's also the reason we have evidence of numerous war crimes in Gaza. "That damn phone" getting banned is horrid for the future
Honestly I’m kinda glad TikTok’s being banned. I think social media as a whole (including UA-cam as I type this) have contributed to a huge shift in hyperfixation to the internet, disconnect with reality, and just general unhappiness. Everyone’s so angry, and the impact that TikTok in particular has had is insane. On one hand, I do think that TikTok has been helpful in making us more aware of certain issues, conflicts, and circumstances people are facing. But even with that, I don’t think that outweighs the detriments of the app (misinformation, short attention spans, safety concerns, etc)
Is anyone gonna tell U.S. lawmakers that China can just buy user data from literally any social media company regardless of where the company is based, just like every major corporation is already doing?
As a Gen Z that's 21. I'm happy about it. I only had TikTok for a short time and hated it. The amount of ignorance spoken as fact is insane. A mass population that's under educated combined with an app where ignorance is the norm is never a good combination. In terms of mental health it's fact that the algorithms just increase mental health issues instead of improving them. I'm always outside doing things. I'm actually driving through Iowa on a move to Chicago as i type this lol. I rarely, if ever, see people my own age outside. And the times I do they're so undersocialozed and lack basic communication skills. My boyfriend is 23, he's the same as me but he's also european so grew up inna functional community. Outside of that everyone i know is 28-42. It's extremely hard to talk to people my own age. Everyone is saying "oh TikTok will be the loss of community" babe go outside and talk to people. You will never be the only one of something in your local community. But you're never going to find those people if your entire time is spent on a screen.
YES!! Finally someone with common sense, as a Gen z who’s 14 I’m also happy about it cus with tiktok getting banned a lot of my peers attention spans will be getting fixed and people won’t be so hyper focused on flaws
Careful what you wish for, as that act they passed could impact apps in the future from countries the US doesn't like, as long as they could find an excuse to claim it as a national security risk.
Well.. I wish you see things from my perspective, at least. I purely use tiktok for producing videos/edits and it's the best traction I've recieved ever.. and it makes me feel so good I can express myself and yield positive results. With it gone, goes all of my hard work and following. While the other parts of the app I can do without, I'll definitely miss it.
Not gonna lie while I can agree with the sentiments commenters on this video about the affects of being on the internet too much from apps like Tiktok, it seems as though a majority of people aren't really understanding the nuances and stakes at play imuRgency described in the video
I think it’s funny that the thesis of the video is “tik tok going away is bad because it’s the platform of cultural expression for young adults” and most of the top comments are like “tik tok going away is good actually”(which I agree with, though I worry about the precedent it sets and the rationale behind it)
As a millennial, I see and agree with your concerns. Mainly the issue of TikTok being gen z’s generational stamp on culture. I think older gens can’t process what it’s like to see most of your life and communication online and so think it’s not important, but honestly - as someone who lived without and with social media - I can see TikTok’s ban being a huge cultural loss. Although there is a lot of things I don’t like about the app, and the issue that faster information banks tend to increase miscommunication and misinformation, I think this is just as important as other generation movements. So much happened culturally on tiktok, a lot of it positive. I hope it will spark something new and creative, I don’t think all of gen z will be shut down. However, I don’t think boomers and xer’s can fathom what it would have been like to have your entire cultural hub shut off like this. It couldn’t be done. But maybe this will be the beginning of a new underground movement - or maybe gen z will feel inspired with a movement to uphold their rights and future. Maybe this is the catalyst to start the revolution - whatever that looks like in 2025 with a pacifist generation it can still be powerful. Banning TikTok is very ridiculous and it’s clearly a power move backed by fb/*twitter* ceos to retake the market. But I hope it backfires spectacularly. Gen z, alpha and beta live, work, play, exist online in a way most ppl want to ridicule to put it down because it scares them how they can’t imagine what that’s like. I don’t think it’s evil, dumb or scary, I think it’s just different. Even if the ban is upheld, you will find a way to survive and escape the older generation’s attempt to control you.
Not to mention the government just so happened to leave open the possibly to more easily ban future apps from countries they don't like on vague "national security" grounds. Meaning the only safe platforms would be those already under their control and surveillance.
I think TikTok is a place where a lot of people can find their niche online where they may not be able to find one in person. I also think a lot of pop culture will not be as publicized because of this, and I think it will be a lot harder for the average person on social media to gain momentum online if TikTok is banned.
It does suck for people who make a living on tiktok (and because well, the whole reason they're banning it is terrible), but the rest of the arguments feel kinda iffy to me. Like, everyone and their moms admits tiktok does more bad than good for them and they wanna get off it or reduce its usage... Why not take this as an opportunity? I barely use twitter anymore, but if they had banned it back when I was active, it would've been a blessing in disguise. Maybe y'all can get some of your attention span and mental health back now
You release China want to destroy you guys right? North Korea and China are literally working together to try and nuke the US. You’re VERY hated, and TikTok is a part of that.
I highly doubt it will be the death of Gen Z media since this is only happening to America and other countries (other than India) will still have it. All those popular American Gen Z content will simply be replaced by non-American ones.
Thank Christ!!!!! TikTok is finally dying!!!! Lets go!!!!! Im genZ and have always been TikTok’s greatest hater so this is the greatest news Ive heard in a minute. Like it sucks for some people but me personally I am hyped!!
Bruh it’s not a flex for an entire generations culture to be on a singular app owned by a foreign entity. Diversify. Social media is everywhere. There are UA-cam shorts, instagram and Facebook reels. They are truly the same. You still get the same tight loop of echo chamber content that short form video watchers love.
Yeah, same. I feel like Instagram's algorithm is more addictive than TikTok's. I literally try to avoid Instagram because there are too many interesting videos to watch on that page.😭😂
Gen Z media will not be dead as there is a present on UA-cam and Instagram. it will only become difficult for TikTok creators to start again because they will have to repost everything if they haven’t already had a presence on other socials and there are already channels on UA-cam that have already uploaded compilations of peoples work
thank you so much for opening the video mentioning that itll be more of a podcast! I love listening to videos on the side but always get anxious im going to miss something if i dont watch
I have very mixed emotions about tiktok, i stopped using it in 2021 after my feed was intruded upon by a video of a women who had given birth at home to a stillborn and was caring for its body as if it was alive. She had several videos. That being said, never used that app regularly again after that. Ik theres that minion thing happening rn, and im always hearing abt cp being rampant on there. I dont like tiktok bc this content can be not only forced on your feed, but also go unclocked by tiktoks algorithm for days to weeks to simply never taking down the vile content. Other media is better at moderating that, but they still sell your data and refuse to take reports of other issues seriously, thus letting the apps become overrun spam hubs. So like idk, ban it all man cut the electricity lets put our feet in the dirt and pick berries idk this is not sustainable and it all freaks me out
Don't worry EMP can solve that if we do an EMP because of TikTok we will save society. God will be happy the 144 thousand chosen ones will save the day. Only keep UA-cam and do the EMP attack on TikTok Corperation.
Speaking of the ban, the reason why I think it's a good thing is because little kids who have access to the app who have low attention spans and young people who don't interact with each other as much as they would have without it, can now have the chance to actually be productive. Perhaps with time, the low attention spans will not be as bad... That is, if they don't seek another form of short form entertainment such as shorts, reels, or highlights.
I think it sucks that TikTok is getting ban when it comes to people’s jobs but if it does I feel like it would good be when it comes to mental health and addiction because as a 16 yr old it really does rot your brain you know
I believe the reason Tik tok should have been banned should have been more about the impact it has on mental health, on the quality of life and the literal brain functions of so many young people including children. But that of course would have affected instagram and UA-cam too and that’s a no no for corporate America
Okay disclaimer I’m still watching the intro of the video but saying the ban of TikTok is the end of gen z media is kind of a funny statement (in my opinion) I mean it’s only getting banned in the USA the rest of the world still has TikTok, and also probably insta reels is going to be the replacement for the Americans. Idk it kinda made me laugh hearing that.
Fr, there’s other social media apps and Instagram is already being used by a large amount of gen Z, also since the ban isn’t worldwide and gen Z exist in other countries then there’s no way gen Z are being erased + the people who still have TikTok can repost them on other apps like they already do
as an author, I'm depressed lol not just for myself but for all authors esp in self-publishing. TT is the best way to get engagement, and I don't think my sales will be nearly as good with it gone >.
@@xragdoll5662 A good chunk of self publishing is about marketing. Not hard to understand why algorithms introducing it to people is beneficial rather than spend hundreds hoping an ad comes across the right people - and then might not even break even. finally, hopefully it'll get banned in my country too after the whole political shit show that went down. Let's be honest, that app ain't a positive thing anymore, it's just full of drama a lot of the time, misinformation and a good chunk of people doing things for fame. It's overall a good thing to get rid of it.
I don’t know if anybody else thought about this, but why did we not decide to try and go back to Tumblr as an option? Maybe it’s just me idk 🤷🏽♀️ like if they had an update where we were able to scroll. Actually you can take the phone away for all I know, let's go back to nokia bricks!

Most of those businesses selling on TikTok are just buying garbage from Alibaba and Aliexpress and reselling it🤦🏻♀️ I get there are some legitimate shops, but if I see one artist selling on TikTok every 2 months is a lot
I personally don’t use it often because I do feel it’s the most addicting of all social media apps for sure, but yeah I can’t help but feel like the government simply sees much of gen z conversing politics and essentially being radicalized (many who typically wouldn’t be one could argue) and they want to get us back on their American friendly apps where a lot more is censored or dare I say their agendas are much further pushed.
Two things that this video fell short off in my opinion: 1. YES IT IS DIFFERENT THAT TIKTOK BELONGS TO CHINA. China is an autocracy, almost a dictatorship. So I’d rather the US have my data than China. 2. We have been begging politics to make change. It’s been known for a while that GenZ’s mental and physical health is worse than any generations’ before. And undeniably the reason is social media. So the government is doing something for the better of the generation. This is a great chance for young people. Yes, I’m sorry for people whose income depends on tiktok but overall it is the best that could happen.
Honestly im one of those dont necessarily care that it gets banned and kinda hope it does. Tiktok does more harm to genz, I think, than good. We were fine before Tiktok, and we'll be fine if it gets banned. Also, if anyone is getting their news from tiktok... that's interesting.
I feel like tiktok and the oandemic are hand in hand the reason why so many people are basically insane. Saying this as someone whos not in America, Inalso feel like one if the few gen z in my area who doesnt watch shortform video. Maybe its cause im the elder side
Love the commitment to post!! I truly don't think tiktok is going to get banned or end. I think the US just wants to throw out threats but it's not gonna happen lol.
im very back on forth of if im happy about the tiktok ban. i agree kids should not have access to tiktok and it has caused sm brain rot, but i am a small musician and it is my main platform for posting and it is confliciting
Do people remember MySpace before Facebook? Gen Z is getting old and will start liking longer format content. If the shorter content hasn’t rotten their brains out or created ADHD generation.
I’m gen Z and as a gen Z person, I am so glad it’s getting banned tired of the Brainrot It’s produces, my younger brother cant stop playing those annoying audios and eat, Get a Job Get a personality bye Tik Tok to the trash 🚮
I'm not usually a fan of old men ruining things that young people find joy in, but in this case, I'm not mad at all. TikTok as a 'source of information' is a very badly executed joke. Like wdym you can't say normal ass words that everybody uses daily but are free to spout misinformation about whatever you please? And that's discounting the fact that everybody's also trying to sell you something. Imo the toxic beauty-culture TikTok has created is worse than Ig in its heyday. The fucking algorithm literally buries you if you're ugly, no matter how good your content is, and people seem to just accept that? Young people's mental health is already in the gutter, and while that's obviously isn't all social media's fault, this typa shit definitely isn't helping.
Honestly, a little bit disappointed with this video. I understand that it is a big thing, and it will have consequences, but there are also some potential pros of this ban. You didn't discuss that at all, and I think it's important to acknowledge that as well.
Idk, i only recently downloaded tiktok. The app is more annoying if anything. Between insta, twitter and UA-cam as well as other social media , I think you guys will be fine. The businesses and creators that rely in tiktok are probably the ones who need to worry, but then again, there are other platforms
Last week, my 6 year old niece got on her soapbox and SPOKE on it. I don’t really care about TikTok because I don’t use it, but I love her unbridled rage and I was impressed (and caught off guard) by the sheer volume at which she spoke her truth lol. It went like this: “You know that guy??? He’s gonna disappear TikTok FOREVER!!! Why does he have to DO THAT?! UGHHHH 😩 😩 😩 but I LOooooOOOVE looking at TikTok!!! He doesn’t even know how fun it is! He doesn’t even care about us! Why does HEEE get to tell me what to do?! He’s not my daaad! OR MY GRANDPA! OR MY MOM!”
My niece is 8 years old and as she’s scrolling the most INAPPROPRIATE content comes up in the guise of being child-friendly. I hear her talk about wanting to go to Sephora and thanks to TikTok she’s afraid of getting wrinkles!! And as a teacher I can tell you these kids have the attention span of a goldfish now!! Tell you 6 year old niece this is the best thing that could have happened to her 🤦🏻♀️
In general, I don't like short form content because of the endless scrolling it encourages and the seemingly mind-numbing affects it has on attention span. I say this as a slightly older gen z who has never used tiktok, but deleted Instagram a long time ago to get away from wasting time on reels. I won't shed any tears over tiktok leaving, but I do think this is blatant overreach from the government, and I don't like the precedent that this will set if it goes through.

One of the few perks of Tik Tok getting banned is that music may finally get out of the making "viral" under 3 minute song trend that has been a plague for years now.
While I don't like Tik Tok personally, I do feel bad for people that would be loosing their job over this
People are just gonna move to another app
Agreed with this sentiment. Short songs are annoying, especially when it’s done wrong😅
Can’t people just continue this behavior through other apps? You have Reels, Shorts, etc

Exactly
Yea but there's other social media that does the same thing.
"Not saying our entire cultural identity as a generation is encompassed in a single app..." Well it sure sounds like it lol
i think he’s just trying to express that tiktok is the first social media app that gen z got to define/make their own since they were the target demographic when it first launched. same as millennials were able to do with instagram. and as a gen z-er myself i agree!

Not at all, a lot of tiktok creators are based around short form content; even if they were to switch over to youtube, yt doesnt promote short form cuz they cant put as many ads in it.

I hope it does get banned to be honest. And people who are addicts to TikTok don’t like that. It’s bad for your mental health, just another social media app that depletes your attention span, misinforms people on very crucial topics and encourages harmful trends like the minion gore.
Yeah, I think the only people really upset are the chronically online ones who need someone else’s intervention for them.
Couldn’t you apply that to just about any other social media app?

We have no idea what their government will do with our data and they refuse to tell us.
My biggest fear with the tiktok ban is that I won't be able to find new music anymore. I've found so many underground and popular artists and songs that are now my favorites ONLY through tiktok. Tiktok is great for new artists putting themselves out there and for consumers to find new music. spotify recommendations and instagram/youtube recommendation just doesn't hit the same
A majority of the new artists I’ve discovered are actually from YT. I think you’ll be okay

Tik tok has been a double edge sword for muscians
for me, i hate the app, the interface, the brainrot, how it ruined the way we consume pop music, consumerism and trends, etc, but if there's one thing that is worse than all the things i could list why i hate the app is the censorship of it being taken away. at the end of the day, i don't have to use it but censorship will always be the worser option.

I don’t care about TikTok but I’m so mad they’re banning CapCut. How am I gonna make videos?? I’m stupid and capcut is easy😭
If it does get banned I actually won't care
Enjoy the rest of your scroll through the comments section.
you put this in the best way possible. Thank you so much
When you say TikTok has 'ravaged' this generation, what you really mean is that it helped create radical social change and white men hate that.
@@VexxieShadowyoure a prime example of why tiktok ban is a neccessity
What you said could be (and was) applied to tv, the Internet, Facebook, Instagram, etc. brain rot isn't new, nor is it exclusive to TikTok.
I’m kinda sad TikTok is getting banned this month. I know the app has problems but it allowed me to meet so many fellow cosplayers. I’ve been trying to go through all my drafts and post them here because I really don’t want to lose all the time and effort I put into my cosplay content 😔
You still have the memories? Dear god the point of hobby is to enjoy doing them, not how much of it can you catalog and post online!
That wasn’t my experience and I hate the app so Idrc but everyone doesn’t feel that way
I am extremely hoping that this ban will actually happen, tick tock is one of the worst things to happen to any generation.
Same cyberwarfare
And we all say in unison, “THANK YOU ImuRgency!!!”
as the opposition, i think that a lot of us also are getting older and have less time to spend online. i think the social media bubble is busting and we are finding out that it is not as great as it was when it was pushed to us. in a couple months I'm only going to have Instagram and x and if x keeps being the way that it is then i will delete it too. I have got rid of tiktok, and next up is snapchat which i am getting rid of when i graduate
honestly i think social media has its upsides but most if not all of them have been corroded as these companies put making money before the actual user experience & safety. social media is soo different now compared to like 10 years ago
I only use you tube but im old tic tok really gets on my nerves if only canada would ban it lol
People use social media at any age, no idea what you are talking about
This less time online phenomenon has already been happening with milennials. We rarely post on social media nowadays unless we’re on vacation or have a big life announcement lol
Blusky is way better than Twitter atm tbh. It's an easy replacement unless you want to follow specific people who haven't moved
(That goes for all sides of the political spectrum, might I add)
We don’t need Tiktok.
But even with that, I don’t think that outweighs the detriments of the app (misinformation, short attention spans, safety concerns, etc)
exactly!
@@MasicoreLord so? we dont need social media. Its ruining kid's brains and being exploited
Love this take.
Banning TikTok causes WW3.
Not to mention the government just so happened to leave open the possibly to more easily ban future apps from countries they don't like on vague "national security" grounds. Meaning the only safe platforms would be those already under their control and surveillance.
Why are you trying to glorify being chronically online? I have a screen time that is intense and even I won’t act like it’s something to be proud of
reading that title: thank god girl. time for y'all to find your OWN identity!
I think TikTok is a place where a lot of people can find their niche online where they may not be able to find one in person. I also think a lot of pop culture will not be as publicized because of this, and I think it will be a lot harder for the average person on social media to gain momentum online if TikTok is banned.
Trump would let it slide because the owner of TikTok is paying him to.
Maybe y'all can get some of your attention span and mental health back now
What I want to know is why taxpayers' money is being used for this BS. Aren't there more important issues in this country? Wtf
You release China want to destroy you guys right? North Korea and China are literally working together to try and nuke the US. You’re VERY hated, and TikTok is a part of that.

I don’t even have tiktok, so I am really curious how the content on UA-cam will change for american creators.
I think it’s only due to social media addiction. However I was never addicted to TikTok, instas algorithm has me in a chokehold idk why.
Ppl will also find another app to be pulled to so
Yeah, same. I feel like Instagram's algorithm is more addictive than TikTok's. I literally try to avoid Instagram because there are too many interesting videos to watch on that page.😭😂
Gen Z media will not be dead as there is a present on UA-cam and Instagram. it will only become difficult for TikTok creators to start again because they will have to repost everything if they haven’t already had a presence on other socials and there are already channels on UA-cam that have already uploaded compilations of peoples work
The only difference is that its gonna be harder to find them, most of these users aren't used to creating short content.
thank you so much for opening the video mentioning that itll be more of a podcast! I love listening to videos on the side but always get anxious im going to miss something if i dont watch
They all gon move to Instagram reels and UA-cam shorts unfortunately
I don't know if the video runtime of 20:25 was intentional, but I love it so much haha
Fr, there’s other social media apps and Instagram is already being used by a large amount of gen Z, also since the ban isn’t worldwide and gen Z exist in other countries then there’s no way gen Z are being erased + the people who still have TikTok can repost them on other apps like they already do

it depends which part of Gen Z your talking about def for the younger ones not so much for older Gen Z who are in their mid/late 20s
IDK
Two things that this video fell short off in my opinion:
Saying this as someone whos not in America,

Last week, my 6 year old niece got on her soapbox and SPOKE on it.
I don’t really care about TikTok because I don’t use it,

In general, I don't like short form content because of the endless scrolling it encourages and the seemingly mind-numbing affects it has on attention span. I say this as a slightly older gen z who has never used tiktok, but deleted Instagram a long time ago to get away from wasting time on reels. I won't shed any tears over tiktok leaving, but I do think this is blatant overreach from the government, and I don't like the precedent that this will set if it goes through.
