@@olorin7611 i think i saw he is saving his main channel for “high quality time consuming projects” but yeah i feel like his content on 2nd channel is good enough for his main idk
Legendary. Production quality is amazing man I love Caleb’s road to wheat port. You hit it on the nose at the end on how many situations end with him actually getting the expansion and having an amazing set up. I think it’s worth the risk
Why is one of the most well done, most educationally valuable videos explaining the strategy of a game that I have ever seen on settlers of Catan of all games 😂 that's so awesome and so tragic at the same time
This is such good content! Watching the final I knew Caleb + Katie were fighting for 3rd place, but I didn't know why. Thank you for everything you do for this community.
Always good to see a main channel analysis from Dylan 🔥 I actually went in the same place as the pros off of first instinct, but even then I knew "oh this is definitely not the place" and I just went there because I didn't have the mental energy to find a better spot 😂. It's no surprise that Bo won in his position though. I honestly would be interested if you got more pros on call to understand their thought process. I'm assuming Bo is a pretty good considering he won the entire thing, though it's a little hard to tell given his opponent's... interesting settlement picks here. I agree with everything you said though. Your analysis videos are always so deep as a self-proclaimed Catan pro myself (not really). They always make me think about how I play in Catan even though a lot of it comes off as "oh duh why didn't I think of that" at my level. Love your videos man. Keep doing what you're doing. I should probably watch a bit more of your second channel lol.
I love these kinds of videos, they go really in to depth and I think you can learn a lot from them, watching the best people in the world making very small but crucial mistakes can help you improve and learn a lot. It shows that this game is way more complicated than people give it credit for and show that even the best can make mistakes. I would also defiantly want to see the full analysis on the game, overall very amazing and insightful video love it!
1000% would love to see a full game analysis, and always love when you do these tournament analyses! It's great to see how many factors a player needs to take into account in order to have a strong game.
For red, I would have placed my settlement on the 8 - 10 - 3 and the 9 - 5 - 12. One of every resource with expansion spot on the 8 - 9 and ability to connect. You control most the brick on the board for early game when everyone wants it and can get to the 3/1 port pretty easy in the late game. go for longest road and forget about d-cards because everyone has an ore wheat sheep setup
I have no idea how you are going to win if you have that setup without just getting an abundance of good rolls. The 6/10/3 9/5/12 is winnable. I don't really think your setup is.
Love your content bro! I’ve watched every video you’ve ever made, and every time I see a new post I watch right away. I actually want to disagree with most people and say I’d rather not see a full-game analysis video of this game. Like you said, 2 players have already lost so it’s not that interesting. I’d rather see another video about tips for placement.
Those two players haven't automatically lost. Because their positions are so weak, they essentially need to collude extremely hard to try to bolster one another up as much as possible and try to hammer the other players down. That could help them win.
Welcome back! Thought you went to poker instead. Looking forward to your updates. Appreciate the new animations too, slick and much easier to view than the over exposed raw catan board.
Best analysis I've seen yet! The new editing style is snazzy, slightly (and I mean only slightly) distracting at times. E.g. the text moving with your fingers and the moving red background.
I would do the 3 8 10 for strong OWS pointing left and then the 5 9 12 for a free road (that possibly gets me to the 6 10) and strong Wood Brick. I'd point that road up to get to a 3:1 port early.
Hi, as a casual viewer (who has some difficulty following this stuff) who plays another board game at tournament level, I wonder what the state of AI for Catan is? It's notable that you never seem to refer to computer analysis in your videos, it's all your own expertise, which is great but a bit unusual compared to other games. Is there AI, but it's simply not good enough (I can imagine Catan wouldn't exactly be the easiest game to crack!) or is this just an unexplored game in that regard?
the AI in digital adaptions of catan is dumb as bread. i am very curious, are there actually any strategy board games with at least comparatively complex rules and high amounts of randomness where AI is beating human players? i thought so far that still was only a thing for games that adhere to a very concise and calculateable ruleset with minimal randomness like chess.
@@kloklon I can only think of poker there, which AI has mastered to a superhuman degree. If that matches Catan in complexity is another question. Thanks for answering my question 🙂
What if yellow took 6/2/Desert and then expanded to the 6/2 port? High wood and brick to expand to the 4/10 wheat port with a starting road in hand. And it leaves the spots around the 3 ore open for white and blue to go
Maybe the competition was tough but it definitely wasn't in the finals lol. Only Bo Peng appeared to have an inkling of in-depth understanding of the game, and I can't even judge his overall skill level here since it's impossible to express much of it in a table this bad.
Orange probably overthink too much, 3 5 11 was kinda obvious to me. I saw 9 5 12 for red but I really did not see a path toward 6 ore, that move is so so genius
Give more of this, is very good. Just a tip, dont make these mistakes look so easy to spot, because probably with the time limit they had to pick, and being an over the board game, it wasnt so easy to find the right placements. I mean, they are still the best catan players or they wouldnt be there ( on average )
The 4th position should generally act as a spoiler and block as many things as possible for the remaining players, so: 3610 and 8612 and go for LR. Sure you have no ore or sheep, but you've hounded all the good brick, wood and most of wheat, so plenty of trade potential. The third player will take 3810, but the remaining 2 will very much suffer with their final placement.
Yellow should place 3810 and point right, really the best option, to play an OWS hybrid where excess wheat is traded for either wood or ore. If 2:1 wheat is blocked 3411 might be available. Edit: Ok, fair points, but I still think this setup is salvageable. Obviously, pointing left is a big mistake. The pp advantage is nothing to sneeze at and if you city up relatively quickly you can go on a strong dev card rampage.
@@-ZH Production points. Yellow has 22, Blue has 17. I'm not a very happy camper when I get less than 20 on the first two cities. Sure two pp from the 3 is not that much, but you already have 1 ore and you can either bite thd bullet and 4:1 or trade your brick for ore as two players are woefully short on brick. After citying up the settlement with ore it will be a bit easier. Sure it will take some time, but no one here is in a position to realize their early game plans particularly quickly. Then dev cards with a potential for a third site if you roll some brick and sheep, which are paired. Sure it's nowhere near a slam dunk, but neither do I think it is the disaster D claims it to be.
For Red I would play 5-9-12 followed by 3-4-10 to start with a dev and point towards 2 3:1 ports. I have all 5 resources, and decent numbers. The best ore + wheat you can really ask for in this spot + board.
Can you please stop covering this one game over and over again. It’s like this was the only high level Catan game that took place in the last five years… I’m so over it

I love this content, it's so fun to play along and see if you made the "correct" decisions!
As 4th I think I’m taking 8-10-3 and 9-5-12. It’s tough but balanced, and sheep port could be useful. Plus we have best road connectivity

Catan is significantly dependent upon luck. The players who reached the finals are mediocre players who got good luck.
