Churchill's point about Philip's original name of "Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg" and adoptive name Mountbatten (from "Battenburg") falls flat when you recall "Windsor" was created solely to replace "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha." Which in turn replaced another German noble house on the British throne (Hanover). It's all made up, and none of it really matters.

      His mother was Princess Alice
      of Battenberg (a great-granddaughter
of Queen Victoria of the UK)
      In 1917 (during WW1) George V.
      signed a decree removing all:

      *Foreign "styles"

      All German (and other foreign)
      royals and nobles had their
      British surnames, styles, titles
      and honorary military ranks
      revoked.
      *Later, (1920's/1930's?)*
      George V. limited the HRH
      to only the children and
      grandchildren of the British
      monarch.
      When Elizabeth ii was Queen:
      Charles and Andrew requested
the HRH for their children (i.e.
      William, Harry, Beatrice and
      Eugenie) Neither Princess
      Anne or Prince Edward requested
      that their children receive an
HRH. So none of Anne's children
      or grandchildren have an HRH
      Ditto with Prince Edward's children
(He does not have grandchildren --Yet)
      Queen Elizabeth made an exception
with all of William's children so that
      they could receive the HRH.
Normally the HRH would have stopped
      with William and Harry.
It was not until Charles became king
that Harry's putative children (if they
exist at all?) received an HRH.

The Spencer's line goes all the way back to the Lancaster and York kings, and most definitely a Stuart. Interestingly, it crosses with a Churchill with the 3rd Earl Spencer marrying into the Churchill family. The Aristocrat Spencer's are very blue blooded. They are Earl Spencer. They are also Duke of Marlborough, Earl of Sunderland, and Barron Churchill. I think Grafton is in there, too.
Diana was without a doubt chosen for her pedigree. It was going to be her, or her sister. Through Diana and Charles, her two sons a descendant of every single royal house since 1066. William and Harry are the most blue blooded princes in history. William will be the first with Stuart blood on the throne in 300 years. Fascinating.

@stevebbuk9557 true point. However, I understand the queen wasn't thrilled with it, though. I don't believe it would have gone forward had Lord Mountbatten had not been assassinated. At that point, the Spencers were on the radar. We will never know of course, but I believe it worked out as it should have. Diana, for all the vortex of drama she brought with her, saved the monarchy by forcing the monarchy to adapt. Her star power forced change.

You're betraying your ignorance. All but one of those are "name changes" because different families took the throne based on some previous ancestor being king. Only the last one - changing it to Windsor - was actually a namechange.

    • @ReaverLordTonus
      @ReaverLordTonus 6 місяців тому +1

@@siamesevodka exactly, the monarchy has had a single bloodline but because of common reasons, a family's name can change over generations as a result of princesses marrying into other families and an heir from those families assuming the throne when the name currently on the throne has no more heirs of their own.
For example, say hypothetically if Edward VII had not abdicated till after QE2's marriage and George VI's death, then the house of Windsor would have ended with him, and QE2 would have been the next in line and the House of Mountbatten would then be the Royal Family's name.
My overall point is that there was no established tradition or rule that said the Royal family always had to have the same name.

    • @siamesevodka
      @siamesevodka 6 місяців тому +5

@@ReaverLordTonus No, you're quite wrong even there. Half the time the name has changed because of coups, civil wars, and invasions. I'm not sure about what happened before the Plantagenets but only Tudor-to-Stuart and Stuart-to-Hanover were peaceful (other than Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor, obviously), the rest were the result of conflict.
The point I'm making here is that, yes, you're right that there is no established tradition that the RF needs to have the same name, but the evidence you're providing for it isn't very good.
