probably because anime cannot deliver taste so they need to be outstanding in music and graphics
Shokugeki no Souma focuses on the interation of the personages. It isn't just "food battle".
It is an epic story about the jorney of a boy that wants become the best chef... But what really matters is the relationship with the others... Rivals, villains, lovers, etc... It is a bautiful masterpiece. Different of all generes that we see nowadays.

There is an anime called amaama to inazuma which also focus on cooking but to not such higher or competative level....

Seriously! I think a lot of people brush it off because it's a Shonen that's not about fighting and it's in the ecchi genre. But imo it's one of the best animes running. The story and characters are very well done.
