    Thanks, JP! this was the way the song was written and intended.. based on Freddie's piano.. (Brian actually learned harp for this... ).. the harmonies are so beautiful... but as noted below, they came to perform it live... with just Freddie & Brian.. guitar-based.. appreciate you hearing this first... then you can appreciate then transition to live.. enjoyed your reaction!

    I don’t think Freddie gets enough credit for his piano playing. You can tell he is classically trained and very good. I love live versions of this song where the audience sings along. It’s a very difficult vocal melody, but some audiences are great. I’m traveling today but when I get a chance to stop, I’ll see if I can find a live video as an example.

    The first rock album I bought! I knew Queen from "Killer Queen" and when "Bohemian Rhapsody" hit the charts I just had to get that album! Never regretted it and still like to listen to the album. Wonderful playing throughout and it opened up my taste for varied music as on this album is being displayed. And the love for longer songs and mini-symphonies started here as well. This song is another example of the variations in songs Queen was able to perform. Love it! Not much after that I looked for the older albums and bought each album after "A Night At The Opera" upon release. Great catalog of music.

    Mays guitar influenced me so much. First before I knew much about recording I thought I could buy an effect pedal to sound like him. So I amassed an array of pedals. That turned out to be a good thing but of course did not make me sound like him. Later when I got a 4 track recorder some of the first things I did was little guitar orchestrations. And that actually teaches you a lot about tone and EQ and combining sounds. Between May and Belew the idea that you can make your guitar sound like anything inspired me towards being that type of guitarist.

    If you're interested in the background of the song, it's said it was written for Freddie's girlfriend, Mary Austen. (And you'll find more details of that through Google if you want.) The official Queen website has a article on it.
    They're different songs (and it's a song that's been with me just about all my life, so oddly... ) but oddly enough it makes me think of *Adville* by Major Parkinson. No idea why. Might be because the piano in that one goes all neo-classical as well. Maybe. Just makes me think of it, that's all.

    Probably a happy problem to have, but its almost a shame that folks practically ignore the album version and immediately bring up live versions of "Love Of My Life" because the album version is absolutely gorgeous.
    Hope you continue on with A Day At The Races. Its very much A Night At The Opera: Part 2 and I find it a more consistent listen. I'd put "You Take My Breath Away" (The ballad on Races) above "Love Of My Life".

    On the one hand this is a very good example of Freddie's great ability to write interesting chord progressions that you would never come up with playing guitar, on the other it drags for me and is one I'm happy to skip. It's one I think works best in alive environment with a stripped back arrangement.

    First things first. "Love of My Life" is the best _composition_ in this record. Not the best song (" '39" is), but the best realized piece of music these guys wrote for this record. It has a really long tune, which showcases Mercury's facility with melodies, and the arrangement is first rate. Mercury's neo-classical piano and May's "Red Special as cello" treatment are just what this song needed. There is an almost perfect analog to this song called "You Take My Breath Away" in Queen's follow up record _A Day at the Races_ , that I believe is meant to be listened together with "Love of My Life". Oh, and this is a total afterthought, in the 1992 Wembley tribute to Freddie Mercury, Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cerone of the band Extreme did a version of this song. Bettencourt transcribed the piano parts for acoustic guitar and he was magnificent. Give it a listen.

    • @Owlstretchingtime78
      @Owlstretchingtime78 12 днів тому +1

      '39' the best song? Not many would agree on that one.

    • @Azabaxe80
      @Azabaxe80 12 днів тому

      @@Owlstretchingtime78 I've been listening to Queen for a good 40 years, and I bet that most people can't name, much less heard, more than 5 songs by this band. So the idea that "most people" would know better doesn't really fly. I also know that a claim to authority isn't a total guarantee of knowledge.
      One hundred years from now, six or seven generations removed from this album's release, the songs that people would gravitate to would be the ones that are easier to sing/play or the most interesting to adapt. "Love of My Life" is by far the best composition, the only song in this album that qualifies as an art song, and " '39", which is a folk song, is the most memorable. A heartwarming _story_ wrapped in a beautiful melody backed by interesting chord changes.
      Think quick. Was Woodie Guthrie a better songwriter than Bob Dylan? And what's Guthrie's best known, most beloved song? Now you get what I mean?
