Ford! I am a 20 years Electronic Engineer, but still your explanation was perfect, detailed and pleasurable. Congratulations! It's funny how, even old professionals, still don't know this basic rules for soldering, and also for joining simple wires.
Its always good to learn something new and fun. I always tell my students in the first lecture of the semester that I will teach them something and they will also teach me something new. Thanks for the kind comments.
been doing it wrong my whole life (solder on iron, splattering it willy nilly on things, always getting cold joints) now thanks to you I'll be doing it right for the rest of my life and I gonna teach my wife too :)
PRO TIP (from a noob): Always use a bit of flux before trying to wick up solder. You can put the flux on the wick instead of the board to keep things a bit cleaner. Try it, the solder gets wicked up like magic!
Good video Sir. I would rather recommend a brass tip cleaner instead of stainless steel. Bass is way less abrasive and more gently to the tip's surface.
@1929fordhotrod Thanks for this video. I recently watched a video where the hobbyist did all the resistor soldering on the component side (not flipped over on the lead side like you and most others do). I've never seen this technique before and it seemed to go much faster, especially since there were about 100 resistors. He dropped them all in and soldered all ~100 in one go. Then he flipped the board over, trimmed the leads and inspected the joints. Any tips or comments on this technique?
How do you know the resistor is bad. Is it black/burnt or did you measure the resistance of it. If you measured the resistance you may not get the correct resistance value of the resistor as there will be other components in parallel with in effecting the measurement.
Yes you can replace the resistor with the same value but my concern is why it burnt up in the first place. There might be a problem somewhere in the circuit that caused the excessive draw in current for the resistor to over heat.
***** you are perfectly correct i had my cell phone plugged in charging with the volume all the way up..it has to be the exact value? How would i find the value? Would it be written on the circuit board?
No. Many components do not require heat sinking while soldering. Component datasheets often provide information for soldering including temperatures and time.
There are several methods that can be used, each requiring a long explanation. You can do a Google search for your answer. At some point I will do a video on etching pcb's.
Do you have any idea of the amount of solder you have wasted. Board can be cleaned after leads are cut short. Double waste noted here All in all a good tutorial for beginners
The manufacture of the "help hands" is Panavise. Remember the term "helping hands" is a generic term as there are many types of devices and manufactures for product of this type. As for the penetration only one resistor bottom right of the screen a timeline 15:00 could have use a bit more solder but not critical as this is a plate through board and there was a good solder joint on the solder side of the pcb. PCB's that do not have plate through hole will not have solder showing up on the component side of the pcb.

This video was great, because it showed you what to do when things go wrong, and various other details the other soldering tutorials don't cover.
Don't forget kids: "Strike and retract....just like a viper."
great vid man. thanks
Precision is neither fast or entertaining, but in the end; satisfying.
Thank You for taking the time to do this video. I learned a lot.
I'm just getting back into soldering on light projects so appreciate the advice in this video :)
treguard1982
Thats the way I was taught to solder 40 years ago...Beautiful solders!
Nice job! Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks so much for making this video! It was a HUGE help.
Marvelous- u showed me "tips n tricks" of good soldering ! thx
been doing it wrong my whole life (solder on iron, splattering it willy nilly on things, always getting cold joints)
now thanks to you I'll be doing it right for the rest of my life
and I gonna teach my wife too :)
You make it look so easy... Mine are never that neat. Good job.
Great video. Nice and relaxed way of talking.

Hahaha... May the force be with you! Thumbs up just for that!
Brilliant, this is exactly what I was looking for.
Nice job. This was very helpful. Thanks.
Splendid video! Many thanks.
Very informative. Thank you
Thank you for work. I learned a lot. Many thanks.
Love your video! Thanks a bunch!
that's one cool helping hand !
nice detail and camera work especially (a rarity now)
+theextremeplayer101 - Thank you. I will be switching over to 4k video for the next batch of videos.
The Bob Ross of soldering
great little video thanks guy!
Excellent presentation...thank you!
Good video Sir. I would rather recommend a brass tip cleaner instead of stainless steel. Bass is way less abrasive and more gently to the tip's surface.
Thank you for this video!
Awesome Video Thanks!
Very Good Video , Thanks
thanks. this was awesome
nice video, well explained
great video thanks bud
Hey thanks - good video.
I was taught to solder by a Bell Can PBX pro (father) Your accent gives you away. Which part of Canada are you from?
I also worked for Bell on the microwave route in North Western Ontario 38 years ago.
Thanks, nice job.

Do I need to use flux on both the wire and the board pad first?
Thanks alot!
How do you know where the resistors go? Newbie here
Thank You.
Hi How hot do you set the pen my one is set at 350c thanks for a good video Jeff uk.
Most soldering irons have a fixed wattage and cannot be adjusted.
helpful!!
Which liquid is used to rub pcb boardusing brush
I'm not sure what you are asking?
athi kesavan It's 90% rubbing alcohol.
i have a bad resistor on a circuit board on a home theather if i just replace it should it start working normal?
How do you know the resistor is bad. Is it black/burnt or did you measure the resistance of it. If you measured the resistance you may not get the correct resistance value of the resistor as there will be other components in parallel with in effecting the measurement.
***** i greatly appreciate your info..yes it is black burnt you think i can replace it with any similar resistor?
Yes you can replace the resistor with the same value but my concern is why it burnt up in the first place. There might be a problem somewhere in the circuit that caused the excessive draw in current for the resistor to over heat.
***** you are perfectly correct i had my cell phone plugged in charging with the volume all the way up..it has to be the exact value? How would i find the value? Would it be written on the circuit board?
You will need the circuit diagram for the product you are working on.
What do I need to do if the double sided PCB does not have the metal inside the holes?
Solder on both sides of the pcb.
thank you
teach me more thank you

It's called a Panavise, not Helping Hands. Several of your solder joints lack penetration as seen from the top of the circuit board.

Shadowcruise99 Your comment lacks penetration.
