Great stuff. Any reason for not using a bigger diameter wheels on the front of your chair? I thought it would make rolling over rough sidewalks much smoother and easier?

Not gonna lie, my wheelchair sat in the living room for nearly 6 months before I was really willing to use it on a regular basis to go out of the house. What's interesting to me is how so many people around me - nearly all guys, regardless of age - will plop down in my wheelchair if I'm not in it and immediately push around, try to wheelie ... and fall. Repeatedly. So, what's the attraction? Does it look like fun? And, after this, are you less likely to see it as a "fun" activity and appreciate the sore shoulders and scraped up hands (and knees, and heads, and elbows)? Did your view of the degree of difficulty involved change?

I’m not usually one to comment on UA-cam videos but this video made me feel the need to do so I am a power chair and manual chair user who has cerebral palsy and this made me really smile for all the right reasons! I experience these barriers and battles you guys showed and discussed and it’s a breath of fresh air to see these experiences from other perspectives I appreciate the sensitivity and maturity that this video has! Thank you for sharing this and showing your perspective and being so honest and open huge props to both you and Richard on this your really educating people keep up the great work. I’d love to see more videos like this from other creators.. thank you I hope this video goes far to help and educate others ❤️

The thing is people think that when you are a wheelchair user that is the wheelchair is the main issue, but quite often it's not the wheelchair it's everything else that comes with the disability. Thank you Richard for doing this video, it needs to reach out to non wheelchair users rather than us that are already in one! We still need more Awareness regarding wheelchair users. Thank you guys.

I’m not a spinal cord injury, but I am a wheelchair user. I’m a bilateral amputee and it was great seeing you experience some parts of what we go through. What you guys said about the problem solving is so true. Everything is trying to figure out ways that work best for you. Like when you had to get back in the chair for me it’s a different way. Every wheelchair user has different tricks and things that work best for them.

Hi. Louis. I just came from Richard's video on your day out in a chair. I wanted to tell you that I think you did really well. I'm not trying to be patronizing what so ever. In my opinion, it took a lot of courage not to throw in the towel when you keep falling out. It was really interesting to watch this challenge from both sides. Really good video. Made me very nervous for your thumbnails, I've ripped mine off on my brakes many times.
On the point of people asking why you're in a wheelchair - I'm the opposite of Richard. So many are uncomfortable about what is/isn't appropriate to ask someone in a wheelchair, I really appreciate that they put themselves in a vulnerable position and seek to connect with me.
I don't want people to pretend I'm absolutely no different, because then the wheelchair becomes a huge elephant in the room. If people are genuinely curious and interested, then I'd much rather they feel comfortable asking, than make them feel guilty for wanting to know more about something that's new to them. Sometimes the fear of offending makes people too scared to even talk to me and then I end up left out.
As long as something is done with good intention, even if a little clumsy (we all are from time to time), I appreciate it.

As a wheelchair user, for me the hardest part was to accept the new image of myself and how other people suddenly sow me.
Thanks so much for doing this challenge, I would love to have a part in PT, where students lern from a wheelchair user how to get around. And they can really experience it for a time. I think that could change so many things in society.

Hey guys, I am a complete T7 paraplegic and would like to chime in on the question about how others can help someone who is not able bodied. I would love for my family and friends to come to me and say hey let's go practice going down a curb or hill. Let's practice you getting into a car and breaking down your wheelchair. Things that ot and pt don't do really. Being more purposeful with time spent together is a wish for me. Thank you for bringing awareness with your videos. Awesome work!!

Richard is wrong on one fundamental thing - no-one is "content being depressed". I cannot believe he'd say such a thing. We don't ask to be depressed. No-one who has experienced it would. It sucks. It's exhausting and debilitating. But you get to a stage where you feel so worthless that you don't know how to ask for help. You feel guilty for troubling people. That how I and others become isolated. It isn't our fault.

I can't feel my bladder. I only have a transportation wheelchair and stuck at home 24/7. i'm 48 yrs old and my 24yr old daughter has become the homemaker. i'm useless to my husband and two girls who are trying to finish college. Love the video but I think it’s hilarious how it’s a video about awareness and there’s a fake service dog in the background 😂😂☺️

No curb cuts?? There’s curb cuts in every corner in my city I believe. I’ll go check

    • @shannonw7144
      @shannonw7144 4 роки тому

The curb cuts aren’t always accessible. They should be...but they aren’t. Lots of times they have giant cracks or are steep or uneven. In a perfect world they would be easy to navigate for all wheelchair users.

      Shannon W it’s crap.
Im becoming more and more aware.
I always check for accessible restrooms everywhere I go now.
My mom has complained my whole life about buildings having steps and no ramps. She’s always looking for those things.
      It’s bad

    • @belindabz

Not only that, there are places where there's a cut on one side of the street, but on the other side, nothing. I've found this several times, mostly in rural areas, but some cities have this too.

Please watch the video. There is so much to be learned and so much to take away and honestly in a sea of crap content I'm so happy when I see things like this that actually make people think and help us open our hearts and our minds. Instead of getting stuck on a phrase and shutting people down, can we try to celebrate each other and lift each other up when we're trying to do something good?
