  • Today we take a nice leisurely dander down Leeson Street in south Dublin.
One of the attractions of this part of Dublin, or Dublin in general, is of course its Georgian architecture, and you don’t have to look far to appreciate it.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

Leeson Street is a street that’s cut in half by the attractive Grand Canal that I featured in a previous Naked Ireland film, so please check that out if you haven’t already seen it.
    • Have you seen the LOVE...
Anyway, I’m starting my walk in Upper Leeson Street, which is south of the canal and we’ll finish up in lower Leeson street away down at St Stephen’s Green, another place previously featured by Naked Ireland.

The street was named after the Leeson family, who were brewers. In 1728 the street was renamed Leeson Street after they branched into property development. Previously it had been called Suesy Street.
As we cross Grand Parade we get our first look at the Grand Canal.
Crossing the canal it’s worth noting that while it looks like a very well-behaved area today, this canal area was once a location for prostitutes. Streetwalkers used to work along the banks of the canal here.
The Georgian period was between 1714 to 1830, during the reign of the 4 king Georges, who incidentally (for those viewing from outside Ireland), where king of Great Britain and Ireland).
Now, one of the houses in the street is the Jesuit community centre, I imagine there must be a plaque on the wall identifying it. Why’s it important, well, in 1990 a lost masterpiece by Caravaggio called The Taking of Christ was found hanging on the wall in here. When it was eventually identified and authenticated it was moved to the more appropriate National gallery, not far from here, where it can be seen today. It’s a very impressive painting. Of course, I probably don’t need to say that Naked Ireland has a film about the National Gallery too, give it a watch.

You can see the consistency of the Georgian architecture in this street, and Leeson Street is not exceptional in this respect. There are many Dublin streets with the same grand Georgian terraces. It’s really beautiful to see all the brown brick, the iron railings and characteristic windows and doors with half-moon skylights above them.
There are also 4 embassies on Leeson street, the Portuguese, Maltese, Palestinian and Cypriot embassies are all here. Why not, these buildings are suitably grand for such addresses, I think. You’ll notice al these houses have basements too - that’s another important characteristic.
We pass the largest piece of real estate on Lower Leeson Street owned by the Catholic University School. So, we had the catholic University here, the Jesuits across the road and the prostitutes up at the canal, what a mix. I wonder was there any interaction?
And obviously this being Dublin, or Ireland for that matter, there’s a fair smattering of pubs. We have Hartigan’s. And just a few doors down we have Madigan’s.
Finally we arrive at the magnificent St Stephen’s Green and that’s where we’ll end our little walk - I must say we got a lovely bright day for it.

The Georgian doors and fan lights are lovely. We have wandered down Leeson Street. On a trip many years ago, I remember exploring Merrion Square, too.

Yes, Merrion Square, another lovely part of the city. I have a film on it that you should seek out.

That was great Greg! I spotted a nice wee bit of vegetive iron work on a window . Very nice. The iron balcony looked what in Oz is called "Federation", a 1900's style of balcony work. Church and hooker's, thats a given. Dublin was always a hard place. The Georgians were imported German aristocracy, famous for there family disfunctions, obesity and of course madness. I was struck by the width of the street. Can you imagine it during the days of horse and cart? Cheers again Greg, a fantastic wee walk around Dublin.

You had a grand day for filming. I was quite distracted by the Jameson's barrels at the beginning, imagine having one of them full, you’d never see me again! 😆I guess they were outside tables but still cool. That cyclist at 2.04 mins had a close call with the bus! Not sure was at fault there without seeing if he ran a red light, or if the bus just cut across him.
I guess the prostitutes worked where the trade was and plenty of canal workers back in the day. The Glandore is indeed a grand building, I do like that style of architecture. It must have been a very affluent area (and still is) when built to have all those large Georgian buildings. I agree the building with the cast iron balcony was gorgeous.
Not my favourite place Dublin, though only really been there in a car for the ferry and gotten lost many times 😛. I did stay once for a little while and hell was it expensive, that kinda put me off the place. I think the best way to see Dublin is in your videos 👍

It’s scarily expensive now! But, you should visit it again some time. It is a great city.

@@nakedireland I think Dublin as expensive as London, I know in 2006 I was looking to rent a place there, cheapest bedsit I found was €2500 a month and a dump! I need get back to Ireland, I hope to but just the small problem of pennies stopping me 😆
