Actually, Lowko, when this game was created people's strategic thinking and execution, the whole rhythm of the game was not so fast as nowadays. As a kid, I gew up playing this game, I would sit back in my base and turtle up for half an hour, and give my opponents some time to build up as well, and fight epic battles against the A.I. If you would sit back for just 10-15 minutes, you would have to face a much bigger enemy force BC-s all over the place and stuff. This series brings back awesome memories!
Hey, I would do this too!
Turtle, then death-ball the mission. Every game.
And like Lowko, I'd do that just to tier up to the highest unit, because how can I lose with my supply full of the most giant thing, right?
3:20 "Oh general Duke is a battle cruiser"... "I mean he is commanding one of course" LOL CuteLowko
I was seven when Starcraft first came out and I liked Siege Tank/Goliath spam, hydralisk spam for zerg, and dragoon spam for the Protoss. I have gotten better. Though this was still nothing compared to my Command and Conquer 2 skills and my love for Kirov Airship spam when playing the Soviets.
The original starcraft zergs... The start of kerrigan and duran... The memories :D Also the start of stukov
if you havent already, dont check the new portraits for Stukov and Fenix. You are not gonna like them :)
Why ahahah?
+Sverr Imo the worst one was Tassadar, he looked so misterious in the original :(
fun fact: Duran is actually the reverse of that dude name in SC2 (narud)
in wings of liberty he is still called duran, narud is his real name, duran was his "undercover" name as the leader of moebius corp
when I was a kid, my terran comp was dozens of siege tanks supported by goliaths, zerg was mutas & guardians, and protoss was invisible carriers
Alright, here's a few unit suggestions:
1. Marines in Starcraft 1 are actually pretty bad, even with Medics: if you're going to use them, put them in bunkers near your mineral lines (the enemy loves attacking workers, as you saw with the Wraiths), and only take them out to chase down units.
2. Build lots of Goliaths: they have good all-round DPS, are quite affordable, and the ability to repair them gives them much greater staying power than the Marines despite the near identical mineral cost. If you aren't using Goliaths, you're handicapping yourself.
3. Ghosts are cool, but impractical: anything you can nuke can generally be killed just as easily by siege tanks, barring a few delicate strategies you won't use because they require map knowledge. Anything you can lockdown can be killed instantly by a large group of Siege Tanks and Goliaths.
4. Don't feel the need to wait for siege mode before pushing out: Siege Tanks can be plenty punishing in their first form.
5. Because enemy units attack the first enemy they see, Defense Matrix's ability to keep said first unit alive for a good amount of time is very worth considering, if you want to be fancy; building a bunch of factories to push out with Siege Tanks still tends to get the job done faster, though.
6. Vultures are great online, worthless in the campaign for everything except scouting out the map.
7. Starports aren't very useful: only Battlecruisers are worth building, and they take so much time that you can easily win before enough pop out to make a difference. And yes, I'm also saying dropships are useless: great in multiplayer, but you can just float the factories over in the campaign instead.
Alpha squad was held in low regard by the Confederacy despite being the 'first ones in last ones out', toughest of all the Confederacies general controlled legions. Omega squad(brown) was held in the highest esteem by the Confederates. This mission was originally supposed to take place after two others. The first of which you help evacuate Antiga prime with Duke(Tank) and Jim, after you set the Psi emitter. The second of which you lead a ground assault on Tarsonis after this mission to set the emitters.
19:16 i think that's pretty much everyone lol. When you are a kid you dont really focus on strategy but rather going for the biggest most damaging unit available to you; only when we grew up we realized how op low-tier units can be
here is a unit composition:
pure battlecruisers
EDIT: and sciense vessels (i just assumed that those go without saying)
a stack of those bad boys kills everything in the campaign
Needs to much Vespingas in New Gettysburg, Combine them with Marines for better use of minerals.
Don't forget a few science vessels for detectors and the occasional shield.
RoBOtic Rebel Not against ghosts. Lockdown gets them killed fast.
He said he made that before. I did it too. Going for "highest Tier only" is a common mistake. Especially on this map where Gas is very rare unless you take expansions, using marines as "Zerg Rush" units really works well.
not in multiplayer ofcourse
but i have used battlecruiser rush repeatedly and it has never failed me
ghost are an issue if you dont have detectors
Oooooooooooooh boy!!!
We're just a few more episodes away from the single most bad ass monologue to ANY game ever!
Hype! Hype!! Hype!!!
When I played BW as a kid I would always go for the highest tiered air units. I don't want to spoil it, but that's why the final mission of the Protoss campaign in the original SC1 campaign is my all time favorite single player RTS moment.
I will also always love the "Finger of God" Protoss composition. I guess, because of SC2 the comp is now called "The Golden Armada" but maxing out on carriers with a couple arbiters is always super fun when it can be pulled off. If you can find a weakness in your opponent's defenses, there' nothing more hilarious than using Mass Recall to drop an armada of cloaked carriers on your opponent is hilarious.
"This could go terribly. Er, this could go terrible, rather."
You were right the first time...
No, Lowko, General Duke is literally a Battlecruiser with a human face.
i fondly remember playing this mission just with a squad of cloaked wraiths and dukes yamato cannon for turrets :) ... sweet memories...
Wraiths are pretty damn OP.
I like to combine them with a small squad of siege tanks and Goliaths. Destroys everything! :D
I used to make a siege tank wall and walk step by step every minute...
2 hours later I could f inally complete the map
Protip: Tank wall is more effective than trump wall
nope. We are going to see marines only :) No need to try and enjoy any other unit type.
I use ghost and nuke any turret in my way, than double nuke the command center, thus killing the economy of the opponent. After that I used tank + goliath to clean everything. Work on every mission with nuke but hard to do on the 9 because the opponent has 2 bases
It's weird, because I don't even remember this mission
I still do that. I just finished a mission with 12 (3/3/3) Carriers. I didn't even leave the base until they were ready.
On that high tier unit thing, the first *real* army I ever made was all Reavers and Dark Archons so... yeah you aren't really alone on that front.
I'm STILL the kinda person to only build Battlecruisers
Same
Same
Same
Same
"Oh, Duke is a battlecruiser!"
Asuming gender, lowko? xD
Meh
Lul
If i remember correctly the duke actually gets "resocialised" by a microchip i think, one of the starcraft novels talks about general duke
Gazillion enemy units waiting a Ghost with couple of nukes to end with their lives, "Hey, lets send a lot of my marines to their death".
Haha I dont know but SImon saying "OH General Duke is a battlecruiser" sounded funny y know :P
I got to admit, I would like to see you taking the base with the four big minerals patches (the ones in the upper left hand side).
It good to see you play this game, but hard time is to come, Lowko. And I will not tell any spoilers, to keep the surprise, coming xD
You make a great job on those battle cruiser
No no Lowko, general Duke is the battlecruiser, he is the nightrider.
That moment, when Lowko make it's "I wonder what's happens next" face >_>
Lowko, you can check the damage/armor of hero unit by moving mouse over weapon/armor icon. They do have better stats, sometimes a lot better than regular(funny facty: the zerg Hunter Killer hydras that you will receive in some missions are zerg "heroes" too)
Lowko, I completely agree with you on Marines and Seige Tanks. They are so good in the campaign, against all matchups, except for maybe Zerg :P
Considering the tricky pathing and small control groups relying on big flying units like Carriers and Battlecruisers is very appealing to new players.
Unleashing the zerg, because what could possibly go wrong.
Spoiler: EVERYTHING.
That's not even a spoiler. It's so obvious.
While we're at it, let's just open up the gates of hell itself. No sweat.
Actually everything going to be according to plan)
Oh I know. :P
Why let a insectoid race bent on ravaging the galaxy get in the way of a good crusade?
Precisely. When younger, the starcraft strategy was always: Two or three "twelves" of BCs, Carriers or Guardian/Muta/Devourer. Sometimes mass Goliath, Hydra, Dragoon. No other units were even considered. :-D
Yes, I would totally only get battlecruisers and ghosts+nukes playing as terran. Also, I remember this mission being super hard and taking me a couple to a few hours (not on my first try, either). I guess it was a lot harder as a kid.
the final mission on the original terran campaign is still hard as hell, i doubt lowko can do it on first try.
I'm enjoying watching you way over play these games.
This mission was one of my favourites because the "outer space" environment and you start with a "fleet" of buildings and ships :)
This mission can be won just by Duke & nukes. Maybe its not the most effective, but its so much fun in doing that! Especially when you have +3 armour for Duke and marines basically become useless against him.
"Are they doing some sick siege tank juggling?!" *puts all siege tanks in siege mode* Not anymore @u@
Pure Battle Cruiser is really fucking good in the campaign, specially for those who can't manage 6 control groups just for the marines.
You aren't the only one. I used to mass up mammoth tanks in Command and Conquer.
They made the zergling in SC1 look very different in the cutscenes than in game potraites
lol I remember when I played this mission back in 2000 or so, 10-12 y.o., and all my top tier units got blown away by enemy trash units everywhere. XD
Anyone else remember doing this mission with literally just Duke, and some SCVs to repair him?
"Does he have Yamato?"
"He does."
"Woo!"
Marines are dying quicker not only because there's no medics and stim uses health. Remember that SC2 also has the combat shield upgrade, making them beefier!
SC2 marines also have slightly more health, range, DPS, and armor(?): all together, it makes the base marine in SC2 much stronger than their Brood War counterparts.
I'd like to see Goliath-Vulture play if you can pull it off!
Lots of hit-and-run and minefield tactics, with the Goliath for anti air in the field.
Ah General Duke: "You want a pizza meatboy?" - had that in my head all the way through the original campaign when I did it years ago.
just in case this comment gets read by someone playing SC1: it's worth noting that siege tanks deal more damage over time while they are out of siege mode (weird huh?) the siege mode is great for it's splash, range, and more forgiving high/low ground differences buf for a situation where you are the attacker it's often better to just use them as pure dps with something else to deal the clean-up shots on units so you don't waste a lot of output.
ironically enough battlecruisers go great with literally any other unit in the game, even units from other races, they are just a universally useful fire support with a simple and effective energy ability, the problem with them is always going to be the cost and time to get them out and protecting them from things like lockdown or feedback or other yamato guns.
I loved SC1 back in the day. I am so hyped to see the next episode.
Lowko I think that for entertaining purposes it is better to follow what the devs wants you to do, It's much more fun and interesting watching a cool use of nukes or high tiers units than a full marine compo, that's my opinion at least. Anyway nice video man
Recommendation. Have an SCV or two follow your army to repair units.. I don't know if repairing is much cheaper in resources than just replacing units but it should save some time.. And of course with units like Dukes battlecruise that cannot really be replaced it should be good idea.r Oh -- and how Duke switched sides so quickly?.. I'm pretty sure Arcturus and duke know each other from way back and there's lot of things going among them that we simply did not see..
It hurts so much when he said "when I was a kid, I would make the entire armies out of BC". I am doing the same thing man, and i am like 20+ year old.
This video (in the playlist) is above the video that comes before in the story.
I made multiple Maginot Lines with bunker, goliath, and sieged tanks. I ran out of supply before I could make an attacking force.
I think I sacked a few units and just nuked my way to a win.
I was definitely of the same mindest of pure Battlecruiser or Carrier or whatever when I was first playing too!
When I was a kid I didn't know what control groups are and only made infantry units coz I thouhgt anything else was too much of a bother. I didn't get through the third mission.
I remember being in a movie theater with my birthday copy of Starcraft from my mother. Someone behind me eyed it and asked to see it, so I handed it over and waited for what seemed like an eternity for him to give it back. I think because I was so young at the time, not even a teenager yet, the wait time for those early Blizzard games (especially Starcraft) seemed like forever. The Internet wasn't what it is today so we had to be content with the little manuals that came with the CD cases to get a glimpse of what was coming.
I've played StarCraft original and Broodwars many times...and honestly, I strongly believe I have never used stimpacks. It just never felt all that entirely useful to me.
(Finished watching) Haha, I almost always go mass battle cruiser army, or even sometimes mass goliath army.
Idk why but the thumbnail scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it
Fun Fact: In the scrapped mission for terran after evacuation of Antiga Prime, you had a mission where Duke is piloting a siedge tank. And yes, the damage of that tank is WAAAAY out of proportions.
Also... yes... what will happen next... yes...
Is a optional quest? I complete both terran missions (original and Bwar) but never found Duke as a siege tank.. Do I have to make something to unlock that? ty
No, the mission with tank-Duke was cut from the game before release. As I understand it, the map is still in the game's MPQ file and can be accessed via an MPQ extractor.
gatsu86 EU no, it was removed from the list of missions, but it still exists as a map inside the package
8 hours of silence, then two people reply at the exact same time... o_O
Orcsbreath it's called "sleep"=)
Lowko, when i played starcraft as a kid i had exactly the same strategy haha. Max out on battlecruisers, ultras or carriers and then Amove into enemy base xD
Aww man, the episodes aren't in order :( Anyway Lowko, if you want a fun little Easter egg do you remember the "dinosaurs" from the "dungeon crawler" mission? Well if you spam left click on those units for ~1min they EXPLODE. It has the visual effect of a nuke but does no dmg to surrounding units. Give it a try! =D
you are not the only one, when i was a kid, i completed this mission using only air units
Me too, only Battlecruisers. Though if i remember correctly, Duke and a couple of SUVs repairing him, did most of the work. I also remember fondly my Dark Archons parking close to shield batteries and mind controlling everything that came along :p
If I remember correctly I used siege tank + some bunker and spam nuke for fun. On remastered I used siege and goliath and push :)
Good job moving the cc closer to the mineral and gas, can be done in a lot of missions ;)
Lowko: it can go terribly
*realizes he sounds too educated*
Lowko: it can go terrible rather
Such a people’s person😁
It always hurts when I see lowko send workers with minerals in their hands into gas extractors. in SC2 the loss is minimal but in SC1, that's 8 minerals, which is quite a lot.
But good show though! Love the playthrough ^_^
19:17
Haha that’s was also me.
Only using Battlecrusiers for Terran and Carriers for Protoss.
I love the A.I in SC1. The fact that they continue to rebuild and try to halt your push is so great. The only thing that annoys me is that they don't send enough units to attack your base, at least not in the earlier missions. All of that becomes better in Brood War though
Remember. the last mission on broodwars is secret. You most beat a certain mission on the last campaign before an "Allie" scapes to get it!
Hello, Im Duke the Battlecruiser!
research vehicle attack +2 , siege tank can start 1 shot marine when siege. (+5 damage per upgrade)
..and with +3 it 1shots hydras!
Little late but Goliath and siege tanks can flatten most things...
The only thing dealing more damage than siege tanks regularly is the protoss reaver. But those things are pretty wacky and not nearly as easy to use as siege tanks, even though I believe they do no friendly fire damage. Also, every single one of their shots costs extra money and they are so slow that they can only really be used with shuttles.
the reaver do friendly fire... I lost some zeloth for my reaver shoot to the enemy ...lol (as siege tank, they have splash damage)
Hm, from what I remember they shouldn't. Also, according to this
classic.battle.net/scc/GS/damage.shtml
and this
starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Reaver_(StarCraft)
, it does damage to enemy and allied units but not your own.
That was totally me as a kid. Rushed battlecruisers all day long. I was kind of disappointed when I started watching pro games and realized they hardly ever got to using those top tier units actually. Then I realized my strats weren't all that good.
Dude, I'm an old school player but I can't wait to see you playing through the Protoss campaign.
I really love how they made raynor in the remastered.
Recommendations:
-Use Ghosts to soften up large bases with nuclear strikes.
-Use two or three Battlecruisers as high powered sniping units.
-Basically, hit hard before sending in the Marines, et al.
As far as I know Star Craft was in fact the first rts on the PC, Warlords was a board game at that time. now i've had this problem with lots for people but, I was there and I played them. it the same with Merdian 59 which was in beta when The Realm Online was already released and I played that too. in that game I played with people from Japan and Austraila too..
+LowkoTV Minor suggestion regarding the remastered play-through. I was looking for a annotation or link to the previous (potentially even next) video link. Would love to see that in series you're doing just in case of missed content easy access. Otherwise keep up the great work
he has them all together in the playlists tab.
in the playlists he has all the videos relating to remastered, including all the unit checks. And while I did check that one out, an annotation or link in the description to previous/next (considering he's doing the introduction already to start) couldn't hurt that much I think :)
I did not just used the highest tier of units in rts games. When I was junger I only used those which I liked. (like firebads and Hydras
I was really bad too but my dad didn't know any codes and I was very much against cheating. It took me years to get trough all the campaigns. I was stuck on the Zerg mission 2 for a very long time because I didn't know I was supposed to bring the chrysalis to the beacon. On Terran I was stuck on the last mission. It was really hard. zerg mission 3 was also really difficult.
As long as nobody cheats in a pvp game/match it really depends on you if you are ok with cheats or not. Back then I was ok with that coz I played for fun and not for a challenge. Today I dont cheat at all (excapt games wich let you cheat after beating it). Just like lowko I like the challenge. ;D
Sure there is nothing wrong with cheating in single player. it is supposed to be the difficulty switch in some games. I also used to love hydralisks. I used to have hero unit groups and then I would retire my units once they got low enough hp. That is partially what made the game so difficult to me. I enjoyed the difficulty though. It would have been nice if someone had told me to take the chrysalis with an drone and take it to the beacon in a language that I understood though. ;D
Haha yeah I was lucky to have an version with my language. When I would have played it in english I would have no clue what to do either. xD
0 upgrades on Marines...they die so easily...You dont say? :D
Lowko i heard you like Swarm of Aliens, Man in exo-suit, Aliens with warp technology. You should check out Dawn Of War 40K
Watching you play is so nostalgic :)
My recomendation is that at least in this first campaign, try to use the units they present you. They are really easier that way.
For example, this mission: the first base would have fallen with 4 nukes, and with the range upgrade of the ghost, you can nuke without turrets detecting you.
Hey Lowko! Just want to say I don't watch a lot of your videos, (I'm not much of a StarCraft guy) but I do enjoy your channel a lot!
Awesome accent btw. It's like eating honey but with your ears.
If I remember correctly, in SC:BW, stimpack provides a permanent boost so it's useful for one or two hits in the original campaign and in BW it's worth hitting a ton if you're using medics.
Aaron Dean permanent?
Back in the day, usually I would just research everything before attacking and focus more on defending early on
This map is meant to be nuke City with cloaked ghosts. lol.
Lowko doing some red army strats
YAAAAAAAAAS I love you Lowko. I was really waiting for this one
19:11 youre not alone Lowko i too was a kid
If the vespene gas is far from the base you can add more SCVs. The point is that only one scv has to wait in the queue
I swear to god lowko, Im 11 minutes in and that scv in your top right base aint moving. If it aint moving by the time im done, im going to cry.
Just wondering if you do know that you can steal enemy structure attachments
in the manual of the original game it is written that the zerg are created by the xelnaga, arcturus just says that it is created by the confederation to manipulate raynor and kerrigan
I don't think Arcturus was intentionally lying to them in that regard. The Confederacy was trying to make a weapon out of the Zerg, and there's no way Arcturus would have known about the Xel'Naga. I always figured he just meant that the Confederates engineered the Zerg attacks on Mar Sara, Chau Sara, &c, which is true. "Created" was poor word choice on his part, though.
"I've been playing RTS games for about years"
Lowko bro what are you like 22 & 1/2 ?
I think he´s 24/25
He already has issues with control groups by now. Protos will be a bit easier since they cost more suply but zerg gonna be a hell!
Can´t wait it^^
i remember this mission, it was the reason i gave up on the sc2 mod, something about it was badly made, i had no problem doing it on hard in the original, but the mod version was impossible for me, the minerals didnt last, and i just couldnt make it work... and the few times i managed to do it, the game would crash.
Do cheats work in the remastered version? Try some 'black sheep wall' the next time you need to fully explore a map
Javier Zurera They do still work
Use some Science vessels in the next map. The ability to drop a defense matrix on a tank or a battlecruiser is amazing. Irradiate is pretty decent too.
more Goliath pls :P and one time use valkyrie... those was so cool to use :)
He can't use valkyries, those are Brood War units. He can't make them until he gets to BW missions.
I know that, I should specific for Bw to try use some valkyrie, I forgot to write that :)
I know this is a small thing but Lowko it's called the ConfederaCY not the ConfederaTION. Also they have at this point collapsed so it doesn't matter, but still.
hey lowko, i think ur campaign playlist is missing one video between meet sarah kerrigan and this one, its the Crashed battlecruiser one
Lowko! You missed the bonus mission in the top middle of the map. =(
If you find troop movements a bit derpy try usen 4 or 5 hot groups of each races 1st flyer their all fast and can be grouped right on top of each other they become a flying ball of death ridiculously effective on any mission you play and fun af love you bro XD
