Thanks for the video. I've added this amp to my IC-7,05, and it's been great so far. Like you, I had minimal expectations. Had to figure out some workarounds to get it to do what it was supposed to, but in the end, it was worth the upgrade.
It's a great amp and it's targeted to Xiegu products... but works with anything that can put out a PTT signal. I have a video on the 705 with this amp also and that is my default ham shack setup.
This looks like a great setup to have a portable low power draw RX radio with the option of high power TX. Most mobile 100w rigs draw much more in RX than I would want in an emergency mostly listening situation. Thank you!
I know this is an older video, but I appreciate you showing this particular radio and amplifier combination. I'm currently in the process of putting together a go box and I have an 817 sitting unused. I assume it would fair the same as the 818. I think eventually I'd like to put the Xiegu 6200 in the box to replace the 817 for HF and add a second VHF/UHF rig, but I can at least pick up the amplifier now and get some use out of it for the HF on the 817.
LOL! I just got my CN-20 last night. But I didn't have a spare audio cable (using my only one for the keyer) So now I know what to expect with my FT-818, which, as you alluded to about Xiegu products, is a bit hit or miss. Great video as always! 73
You are correct - the Digirig would connect to the "DATA" port on the back of the radio so you could get audio in/out - but since the "ACC" port is now occupied, you can't do CAT control - this means that with FT8 for example, you'd turn off the cat control and the PTT, set it for VOX and manually tune in the frequency on the radio. Not impossible, but not too bad either. I'm sure if somebody was very enterprising they could make a device to go in place of the CN-20 that would allow all things to happen.
Glad I don't have to worry about 100 watts. I have a Yaesu 991a and it does 100 watts. My Kenwood 281a does somewhere in the neighborhood of 65 + watts. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
As far as I know, its not a ham band so it isn't valid for the demo I'm doing in the video. I'm sure its a very good frequency in its own right though.
Thanks for the tip! I don't know who would have any reason to switch bands in the middle of transmitting, but for the person that needs this info, I'm glad you were here for them.
Right, it's advertised as working with the 817 and NOT the 818... I can't imagine yaesu changed the band data output in that revision. There is also no firmware upgrade. But now we know and we start working on a fix.
@@temporarilyoffline That reminds me of an old Marx Brothers joke. Why is the railroad station so far from town? I guess they wanted it to be close to the track.
@@temporarilyoffline Why would you get a QRP rig and then put a 100 watt amp on it. You've missed the mystique of qrp which is to use as little power as possible. Maybe you just don't get it.
Exactly, just buy an FT-891 instead. The 818 is a great rig for what it is, but it's no match for the 891 with it's digital filters, digital noise reduction, and digital speech processor with parametric EQ. 2 rigs for 2 specific jobs.

Yes, exactly

Haha, never ending fun, keeps you on your toes. I'm diggin' that amp.👍
You and me both!

Glad I could help!
Gotta love that power! Gigawatts, great vid bro, tnx.
Thanks for watching!
Now just add the Comet toy box antenna and you're ready to go 🤣 That was a good demo--thanks!
Ooh my favorite antenna!
That is why I like Amps that track the RF and don't use a non standard method for band switching. Nice video TO.
Thanks for watching!
When you set it up like this, can you connect a digirig as well somehow?

All good radios! Thanks for watching!
What's wrong with 6.926.39? I can't find info on it.

If you decide to go QRP why buy an amp?
Nothing over 5 Watts here for 30+ years, I also bought an FT817ND in 2017.

Why or why not. I enjoy both.
@@temporarilyoffline O.K.
Have you tried the amp with a Hermes lite 2?
Not yet, I need to get a Hermes Lite 2 first
You should not switch bands while transsmitting! good way to hose your rig up. Read your owners manual.

Interesting. 👍
Glad you think so!
@@temporarilyoffline Do you think the tracking bug is a coding issue or hardware?
@@DirtyPlumbus at this point I think its a completely code-fixable situation. I will be doing some work in this space coming up.
This video sponsored by Sigh-gu.
A bit disappointing that you add the board to do the thing and it doesn't do the thing (automatically follow bands).

Like most Xiegu stuff, it has a good beat but its hard to dance to. 73
Turrible!
Why not use a 100 watt rig???
It would be really hard to demonstrate how the 818 works with the XPA-125B if I was using a 100 watt rig.
