    I wish it had at least seemed that easy in the early seventies when I was growing into my adolescence and those particularly exquisite desires. I used to watch one of my crushes in the conditioning room, working out, shoeless, shiirtless, wearing only a pair of skimpy red shorts and those white athletic socks that came up over the knees. I even remember that the socks had a green seam right over the place on each of his feet where the toes' cleavage. But in that time and place, such feelings of desire as I had for him could not be expressed; and, he was a jock, a varsity athlete (a starter), and I was a bookish nerd---and in our school system, then, those two were irrevocably separated. I am sorry, Jay, that I did not have the strength and resolve to tell you how beautiful you were.

    • @ocrodger

      I hear you quite well....my crush was on the wrestling team, 1973, in California and his name was Greg. I was one year back and not into high school so I went to work alot. He was beautiful and so fine to watch. What a beautiful man he was. Hope he is doing well.

    • @J-Called
      @J-Called 3 роки тому +5

      @@ocrodger Thanks for sharing that. In our rural small town's small high school, Jay was one of our all around athletes---he played football and baseball, and wrestled (which was fun to imagine; as a geek I was hardly welcome as a spectator)---he was varsity in all three. He had an eccentricity that, in our conservative town, raised suspicions of "hippie-ness" right away: he could not keep his shoes on. His mother must have had to wash a lot of his socks repeatedly, In the conditioning class, the only class in three years that we shared, he was the only student not docked points off the overall grade for not being in full "gym uniform"---which was alright with me. In fact, just fine with me. Our class was first period, that quarter; and from mid November through the end of December, m1973, he started each of my days with sparkle . . . and with something more, although he did not know it. That year was the most difficult for me in my twelve years of public school. I hit skid bottom, socially, and my grades began to slip. I did not know the next two years would bring a radical improvement; but at least, for the duration of that quarter, my days were easier, and even enjoyable, because of Jay's presence. I could not have ever been the center of his days for him; but, during that time, he was the center of my days, and of my dreams at night (more than once), As you said of Greg, I hope Jay is doing well; and, like Greg, Jay was beautiful. I wish them both well.

    My coming out to my parents was NOT easy. Mom was fine with it. (She already knew, and was just waiting for me to tell her.) Dad, on the other hand, was much less accepting. After I managed to getthe words out, he said (parphrase) Ypur mother and I were raised in a culture where homosexuality was not accepted as a viable life choice. So if ypu expect me to throw a big party for you, it ain't gona.happen. He wouldn't say another word to me for the rest of that day. Not even goodbye when he and Mom drove away to return to their home.

      When I came out, the gay establishments were having random drive by's & molotov cocktails thrown at them. My brothers fought me like I was thief that broke into the house. I was disowned and kicked out with nothing and told that they hope I die from Aids. I had just turned 15. Long story short, they all ended up needing me at some point in life, and I never let them look down on me or treat me as anything but a human that deserves the same respect as they would want. When my brothers fought me, I fought back. When my dad said I was a worthless piece of shit and not his son, I said, "Good. I never wanted to be the son of an alcoholic, adulterous, wife beating piece of shit either." At several points in life they have had to eat a lot of crow because I was the only one that could help them. Working in Healthcare I have learned that illnesses are the great equalizer and could care less about your thoughts or religion. Anyway, I paved the way for my many gay nephews and nieces, so that their experiences wouldn't be the struggle that mine was. When my dad died, none of my brothers or sisters were there and I was left to take care of the man that had been the bane of my existence, but when I looked after him he was like a scared child facing his mortality. He still lashed out even though life took everything he held dear including his legs. Sometimes he'd say he didn't need me and my brothers /sisters will take care of him. I'd have to tell him that yes his kids know how sick he is but they're not coming and they just want to know when he's died. My brother's and sisters didn't tell me when my mom died because I would've went with my partner, whom she loved & adored. Broke my heart because my mom died in a hospital, alone, in another city. Point is, my nephews and nieces have better relationships with their parents now that they are out and I'm grateful that I could save them a lot of pain by being strong & setting an example for them. Much love to you all.
