Some scientists take time travel seriously. Should you? What does time travel reveal about the nature of space and time? What about the laws of physics under extreme conditions? And don't forget those 'Grandfather Paradoxes', where a time traveler kills his own ancestor.

To go into the past would involve the time travelling matter to meet itself or, in other words, duplicate. To see myself in the past is theoretically conceivable, but to physically meet myself, is another matter.

I don’t want to travel anywhere I want to be able to see and know the different outcomings if I were to do it or see the alternative realities somehow like a device to show us different realities of our lives like if we made this decision or did this like let’s say we bought ice cream in one timeline and the other we bought something else or did something else like how does that effect our future

I would believe that a time traveler (especially to the past) exists if : he is not trapped in time, his existence is eternal and he has all the knowledge of the universe (from the beginning until the end), he has no business at all, except to see and enjoy everything that happens. Even though I know it's very impossible, but sometimes I wish that I could go back in time and make all decisions more calmly, courageously, honestly and with gratitude for everything I have, love others and respect myself more.

wouldn't travelling 500 light yrs take 500 yrs for this hypothetical space journey for the person in this rocket just to get just halfway?
Obviously, l must be wrong abt this. So travelling at that speed that must make you travel a light yr in a fraction of a yr in your reference frame then right?
Can someone also pls tell me then the exaxt amount of time it would take in the spaceman’s time reference to travel 1 single light yr ????

EggHeadUSA : The law of Paradox is when attempting to travel backwards in time in your own dimension, the very attempt would cause a paradox. This is cause by an increase in energy, dark energy to achieve the speed needed to catch up to the event in question and then slowing down to catch the event would cause such a release of energy that it would destroy space time. That destruction is the paradox. Only time this does not happen is in a natural event, but that natural even is still recorded in time space, and as time space catches up to event it explains occurrence, example would be a temporal loop. Please disprove my logic, always willing to learn from my mistakes, do you have a better explanation?

What I think Professor Gott III is showing us will undoubtedly be interesting for the lucky generation of physicists of the future who finally crack the code and get to travel through time. One has to wonder what this is going to be like. Because our vision of the future will certainly only show what we think it will be, but probably the first travellers who venture into the future will experience a world that is much less interesting than we can imagine it to be. Why do I say that? Well, just imagine what life was like in the 1950s in your country. I think a lot of people would agree it was a mini-golden age in America. But if someone from the 50s came to our time, I wonder what they would think of how things have evolved.

We need to actually define what constitutes a time travel to past. In his examples, if I understand correctly, he will outrun the speed of light, then look at the delayed light (which followed another path) and see himself leaving. This is not time travel, it is just watching a video of an event that happened in past. If this is time travel, then we invented a time machine long time ago. It is called a video or a photo camera.

A magnifying lens in which a beam of firing plasma passes thru-it can create a hollow portal that will allow one to travel thru time. Check out the Novikov consistency principle. It assumes certain conditions about what sort of time travel is possible. It assumes either that there is only one timeline, or that any alternative timelines (such as those postulated by the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics) are not accessible. It was featured in one of the Discovery documentaries, if I remember the name of the TV channel correctly.

To really answer this question, one must ascertain if the past and future even exist. And I don't think anyone actually knows the answer to this. There is an ideology called "presentism", and the presentists believe that the past no longer exists, that it has been destroyed, and all that exists is an everpresent now. And they say they "know" this is how it is, of course that doesn't mean anything, there are also enough individuals that say that they KNOW that Jesus is coming back, you should doubt anyone that claims to KNOW something that can't be verified.
That's what we need to do though, we need to establish whether the past still exists, if it is accessible somehow. Though maybe the only way to confirm that it does, is to go back in time. I'm inclined to think that it is possible, but very, very difficult. Consider this..... if time travel was EASY, I would expect the whole universe to have been colonized, by some civilization. They could literally expand infinitely in a finite time, so all it would take would be ONE such civilization developing such a capability, at any point in time, at any place in the probably infinitely large universe, that was able to and intent on colonizing the universe and had developed time travel, and they could do it. Yet the Fermi paradox suggests that nowhere in the universe did this happen, because you look out, and you DON'T see that every planet in the universe is colonized, that the universe is NOT frothing with advanced civilizations, and in fact they are nowhere to be found. I would expect if warp travel was ever developed by anyone, or time travel (the 2 of these go hand in hand, if you can do one, you can do the other), that there would BE no uninhabited planets in the universe. Which either means the universe is finitely large, or that it's actually IMPOSSIBLE.... or possibly that it's only possible in certain places. The only way to find out though, isn't with universal anthropic logic nonsense, but to perform experiments. Such as the delayed quantum eraser experiment. Or to actually GO to a rapidly rotating black hole and see what happens if you follow paths around it in the opposite direction that it's rotating, that the math says would result in closed timelike curves. I understand that's one way to do it, since the ergosphere pushes things around it faster than the speed of light. Another way would be this man's proposed figure 8's around 2 cosmic strings that are whipping past each other. But cosmic strings, you're not likely to find any in an infinite universe. Because each one removes a 1/200000 pieslice out of the universe, the entire universe. This suggests that there can't be more than 200 thousand cosmic strings of the infinitely long variety anywhere in the universe. So if there are only say 100 thousand cosmic strings anywhere in the universe, and the universe is infinitely large, I don't think you're going to find any, as all of them would statistically have to be an infinite distance away. I read his book some decades ago, this guy found the first solution in general relativity that didn't require a rotational cosmological constant component, or negative mass, that allowed for backward time travel, that's his 2 cosmic strings scenario.

The whole idea of time travel paradoxes is overrated because if we went back to anytime that in itself would be a paradox that's assuming we would be travelling in the same universe because we wasn't there in the first place but if we time traveled into the past here is how it would work we would also have to travel into a alternate universe that's a 99.9 % copy of our universe only difference you is you travelled there. Especially the wormhole example, where time to the future can end up wrapping round to the past. *How* does it do it? If I sit here, I'm travelling into the future at a speed of one second per second. What would cause me to end up back where I started? In his prior example, by what means is his outrunning light in terms of being in space? Is he using a warp drive like in Star Trek? It's easy draw this stuff on paper, but that means nothing in terms of practicality.

If you move at a fraction of the speed of light, than you're in a statis of almost not aging anymore, but the universe around you still is.
