There isn't a lot of stretch to this beanie. If you want it to stretch more I would recommend using something other than flannel. You could use a fleece that stretches.

I see and understand why you made the Sherpa longer than the outer layer but, how does it stretch? since the flannel doesn’t stretch 🤔
