Thank you for saying that they are basically harmless to our plants, just annoying 🙃 I have sticky traps throughout my house 🤣 I also bottom water and will use hydrogen peroxide (1 part to 4 parts water) to kill the eggs/larvae only when I know they are in the soil.. so as treatment, not prevention 😁 Nice layering btw 🤓
Would also like to recommend covering the top layer of your plants in childrens play sand as the fungus nats are unable to lay there eggs in the soil. It worked for me just thought I'd give it a mention 😀 also great work on the video 👍
oh god i remember having a horribleeeeeee fungus gnat problem when i first started collecting! this vid is so so helpful:) i lost a raphi to fungus gnat larvae! be careful out there y’all 🤧🤢
I have plants in my bedroom and I’m VERY new to plants and within the first few weeks I had like 100 fungus gnats and I’m TERRIFIED of bugs I had no idea that plants would have bugs and pests in them I’ve had this for months now tysm for this video lol ❤️
Sorry to hear this!! I also found spider mites on my mini rose bush. Luckily they didn't spread to my other plants. It has a place of honor away from my collection. But I did search everyone else meticulously though
@@GoodandPlanty depends on how far gone you are with the gnats :-(. May prevent them.. but if the already exist... not so much. That said most of my plants have cinnamon on them...
Thank you! A fungus gnat literally flew past me as I was watching, lol. I've been using the ACV mix but it's not as effective as I'd like. Gonna try the yellow sticky traps!
it’s unfortunate but a lot of times natural methods aren’t great at controlling big outbreaks. they make awesome preventatives/small outbreak treatments though! just my experience :)
I think I'm still dealing with the emotional scars of my last fungus gnat infestation, haha. I only drink out of plastic cups that have plastic lids (like those reusable starbucks cups) because I would have fungus gnats fly into my glasses. Also, I jumped A FOOT at the little buzzing side effect you added, hahaha. Omg, the trauma.
I’ve tried to put the mosquito bits on top of the soil but I always find mold growing on the bits. Have you noticed this at all? If I mix it in my soil, I wonder if this would happen all throughout.
watching this video and halfway through a damn fungus gnat in my room flew onto my laptop screen ugh. Definitely agree on letting the soil dry out a lot more before the next watering. Helped me so much cut down on the damn population of these beasts. Sticky Traps worked wonders as well, at least catching a ton of the adults. Because I can't really get mosquito bits in Europe, I heard that there is a powder used for ponds with the same BTI bacterial as in the bits. Hoping to find it sometime soon so I can try it out. Heard that nematodes could help as well but they can be pretty pricey, especially if you have a lot of plants that are infested.
all good stuff! when it comes to fungus gnats i feel like there isn't a one size fits all. it's all about finding what works for you. hope your gnats go away soon!
I tried all the organic methods and still had fungal gnats. Last night I resorted to a Malathion drench. I read the instructions for a spray mixture, (1 1/2 teaspoon to one gallon of water). I place the plant (Queen of the Night) into a large bowl and drenched the potting soil not the leaves. It took about two quarts to drench the soil. I then raise the pot and sat it on a cup in another large bowl and let drain over night. I also had a small fan blowing on the plant to dry out the top soil. I am sure some will freak out that I used Malathion. Unless you're drinking it, snorting it, showering in it and spaying it everyday without protective gear everyday it is safe. I just hope it works.........
So I was blessed with these bugs and I had 2 parakeets and I was hoping they eat them But I was SO WRONG they just sit and chirp and I had over 50 plants so thanks for this I still have them but there are now dieing fast
I love your videos girl, so informative! I've learned so much in the last couple weeks from you! On a side note I'm killing fungus gnats as we speak, so I'm taking these tips!
When you put mosquito bits on top of and in the soil it seems like they start to get fungus on the inert part of the mosquito bits. It seems like you would then be setting a buffet for future generations of F gnats, no???
Ughhhh last infestation killed my very first palm plant, it was not just gnats but 3 differnt types of bugs, so spider mites and what seems like some sort of other pest. Now my poor Alocasia came home with fungus gnats🙃 have several other plants now in my collection after the poor extended death of my palm that was like the little engine that could, kept trying, but ultimately was no match. Might bake the soil rising it to 180 F and then leaving at that temp for 30 mins. Ive heard things about toxic salts from the soul leeching out above 180. I sprayed the plant in neem oil and a horticultural oil with garlic, clove an dother stuff thats natural. Found the bugs after watering so have to start the drying process ughhh. Put cinnamon on top the soil in a not so thin layer, it was like snow lol. So far haven't seen anything else but will give it a bit and then cook the soil, wash the plant, spray the roots and repot, and then put sand on top.
Hello! I found the organic perlite that you use. A bit expensive 😅 do you have any alternative products that’s similar to what you’re using for your soil mix?
hi!! sadly perlite is already one of the cheapest options (compared to components like pumice). but you don't have to buy organic espoma. miracle gro is usually the most affordable option, depending on where you live. but be careful because recently people have been finding pests in miracle gro products. you can also try buying smaller sizes. unfortunately, having plants can easily become quite an expensive hobby! :(
I have a different way to control fungus gnats, which is are my sundews! They love fungus gnats, they completely obliterate the pesky insects by EATING them literally! MWA HA, HA, HA!!!
