At that point they were aiming for USA anyway, as economic embargoes started to hit them hard and they had to do something about it. Germany was still in non-aggression pact with USSR and Japan followed with their own and they were not going to change plans. This proved to be a big flaw in Hitler's plan, as Stalin (after waiting some time to be certain), could finally bring his experience siberian divisions to push Germans from Moscow. This left USSR with a pretty skeleton crew to defend their border, but at that point Japan was already going all out on USA and change of plans was not an option.
