My sister was Nick’s first wife, the law student. They made a home in the storeroom behind the tattoo shop in McKees Rocks. Walking into that place was like walking into one if his assemblages. It was filled with ordinary objects collected in an extraordinary way. I remember a large model of a jet plane hanging over the fridge, a full size sign somehow acquired from a Mobil gas station of a red flying horse that served a a wall in the bathroom, and, most delightful of all, a bushel basket full of baby doll eyes.
My husband and I both got tattoos from Nick in 1993. They are still beautiful. A few years ago I was getting a tattoo from a local artist and he mentioned how great mine looked for being almost 30 years old. When I told him who did it he said, "well that explains everything." R.I.P. Nick.
Only knew of Nick as a tattooer through the Vice documentary about Thom whom I was lucky to meet before he passed. I saw the the Vice doc and was blown away of course not knowing anything about this legend and Nick I’m sure glad I did though. Thanks
