  • Review of the brand new Tortuga 40L Travel Backpack which is the latest travel bag from the company behind the Outbreaker and Setout Travel Backpacks (some of the most comfortable we have reviewed on the channel). This bag had big shoes to fill and has a number of updates based on feedback that users provided to the company after traveling with their other bags and this video I will be talking through these updates and how this compares to other popular one bag travel options.
What do you think of the 40L Travel Backpack? What do you look for in a one bag travel pack?

FYI for those considering the bag, I found it heavy and overbuilt with some loss of volume. The harness height adjust system is overbuilt and adds bulk and weight. The laptop compartment and tons of foam cut into the main compartment quite a bit. I do love the front admin compartment, which was perfectly done. Compared to the Minaal 3.0 I did probably get 3-4 more liters of space.
Thanks as always for doing the reviews, Danny!

We lost 5 Liters of volume with this update, they should have kept the 45L size. Even with Ryanair with a carry-on depth limit of 20 cm you can travel with the Outbreaker 45L that has a depth of 23 cm, there are a lot of reports on the web, and if you are concerned you can just leave the Outbreaker 45L a bit empty in order to squeeze it into the carry-on test box. And in the case you want to fully load the Outbreaker 45L you always have 5 more liters compared to the Travel Backpack 40L, and you can fit a lot of stuffs in 5 liters. The 5L reduction is a major fault. They basically sacrificed 5L for a 3 cm reduction in depth, it was not worth it.
It also lacks of side compression straps.
    It has less internal organization.
The problem is that the market lacks of 45L travel backpacks with a GOOD harness system, with a breathable back panel, WITH hip belt and with shoulder straps that do not connect with buckles. The vast majority of companies produce backpacks that are 40L or less. There are only few 45L backpacks in the market and they all have something that do not make them at the same level of the Outbreaker 45L:
    - Osprey Porter 46 CONS: 1. NO breathable back panel 2. The shoulder straps connect to the backpack with buckles (not secure enough)
    - Knack Series 2: Large Expandable Knack Pack 30L-46L CONS: 1. The suitcase compartment is only 16L
    - GORUCK GR3
    - TOM BIHN Techonaut 45 CONS: 1. The shoulder straps connect to the backpack with buckles (not secure enough)
    - F.A.R Convertible Backpack 45L CONS: 1. NO hip belt
    - Patagonia Black Hole MLC CONS: 1. NO breathable back panel 2. The shoulder straps connect to the backpack with buckles (not secure enough)
    - Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L-35L-45L CONS: 1. NO CARRY-ON COMPLIANT it's 22" x 13" x 11" in the extended 45L mode too big even for some US airlines
    - Standard Luggage Co. Carry-on Backpack CONS: 1. The shoulder straps connect to the backpack with buckles (not secure enough)
    - Wandrd HEXAD ACCESS DUFFEL BACKPACK CONS: 1. NO hip belt
    - Osprey Daylite Carry-On Travel Pack 44 CONS: 1. NO hip belt
    - Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack CONS: 1. NO CARRY-ON COMPLIANT it's 22 x 14 x 11 in, too big even for US airlines 2. The shoulder straps connect to the backpack with buckles (not secure enough)
    - Matador SEG42 Travel Pack CONS: 1. NO CARRY-ON COMPLIANT it's 12.5 x 22 x 11.5 in, too big even for some US airlines 2. NO breathable back panel 3. NO hip belt
    - Topo Design GLOBAL TRAVEL BAG 40L (*can expand to 45 L when fully packed) CONS: 1. NO breathable back panel
We lost a bag that covered a hole in the market, companies don't like to produce 45L travel backpacks.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback. Let me explain our reasoning here. We used to think that 45L was the obvious best size. But the market told us otherwise.
The Outbreaker 35L outsold the 45L, so most customers are gaining, not losing, volume. Both in sales and surveys, our customers consistently tell us they want an "international max-sized carry on", regardless of the volume. People even Google "40L travel backpack" more often than "45L travel backpack," so it's everyone, not just our customers. Based on all of that, we had to sell a 40L bag. We're giving people want they want.
As a company, we need to make and sell bags that fit the carry on limits, even if travelers could get away with a bigger bag than is technically allowed. Most people seem to value the certainty that something will fit over an exact number of liters.
With that in mind, we updated the size to 40L to fit max international limits while also slimming down some padding and simplifying the inside of the bag. Even people who previously owned a 45L bag shouldn't notice much practical difference in packing space, even at a smaller footprint.
I hope this explanation is helpful.

@@TortugaBackpacks thank you for taking your time in reading and answering comments of users.
I understand that more people buy the Outbreaker 35L rather than the Outbreaker 45L, and I understand that those that would have bought the 35L would now buy the 40L. But at this point wouldn't it have been more convenient to upgrade the 35L to 40L and keeping the 45L to 45L, instead of doing 35L to 30L and 45L to 40L?
Also in the Pack Hacker review they mistakenly assumed that the Travel Backpack 40L is an upgrade to the Outbreaker 35L, it seems more logic, but in your site the reviews support the idea that the Travel Backpack 40L is the successor of the Outbreaker 45L, they share the same reviews.
Maybe the people that will buy the Travel Backpack 30L are a new group of people that would have not bought neither the Outbreaker 35L and neither the Outbreaker 45L because too big.
Goruck for example sells both a 45L and a 40L version of their bags. Now the Goruck GR3 is the only alternative to the Outbreaker 45L. As I analyzed in the first comment there is not another bag in the market like the Outbreaker 45L with:
      1. 22 × 14 × 9 in dimension
      2. Load lifters
      3. Hip belt
      4. Breathable back panel
      5. Shoulder straps that do not attach to the bag with buckles
      6. A volume of 45L
Who wanted to buy a bag with those features could choose only between the Tortuga Outbreaker 45L and the Goruck GR3. There is this sector of the market that companies left empty, the Goruck GR3 is out of stock. So soon nothing will be available for costumers that would like a bag with the features exposed above.

@@anon003 The new sizes aren't a 1-to-1 update. We think about it based on the use cases. The new 40L and 30L will cover the use cases of the old 45L, 35L, and Divide. For us, it doesn't make sense to sell a 40L and a 45L. They're too close in size which would create confusion for customers.
I understand your preference, but the market demand (based on our sales and surveys) is different. At least for what people want to buy from us. Right now, we have the new 40L and 30L and are selling through the remaining stock of 35L and 45L. So if there's demand for a 45L (in addition to the 40L), we will see it in the sales.

40litres is a good size. Some improvements but the organisation pockets still open to have contents drop out if you are frequently swapping between upright and side carry. There are organisation pouches that strap and zip down that might still be better carry option. The shoulder straps don't tuck away for storage and suit case carry. No shoulder carry option? If you need to go two bag travel being able to use either back as backpack or over a shoulder helps. The Outbreaker 45 (2.3kg) and 35 litres (2kg) are heavier, larger and on last call. I'll stick with the Setout Divide.

    • @dannypacks

Thank you for watching and for the support! All are great options, I think it depends on how much space you need and organizational preferences. For most people I would say the Tortuga lite is a really great option and balance of comfort / space, this one is a little more comfortable and weather resistant. The travel pack 3 is slightly smaller but maybe the most well rounded in terms of features imo and the Mlc is good if you need extra space or you want the option to use as a shoulder bag but won’t be as comfortable as the other 2

Nothing here to sway me from other bags (Aer Travel Pack 3, Peak Design 30L) or even Tortuga's other bags, particularly the Setout. @@johnnynguyen3521 Zips from the bottom of the pack? No way to access anything from the top of the pack, and everything falls out of you happen to tilt the bag upright when that compartment is unzipped. They should've had it zip the other direction, or left it in two separate horizontally zipped compartments like the old Setout. So...I like the idea of storage there, but the execution here was a fail. Just a bizarre zipper layout

@@drewnc2009 Hi Drew, Let me explain the zipper layout. We originally started with the zipper on the side side of that pocket. However, whenever you opened the pocket, the mesh lid would cover your stuff on the other side of the bag. We found that made packing both sections annoying. So we reversed the zipper. It's a double zipper so you can open it from the top or the bottom of that side to access anything you need in that pocket.

I use pretty lightweight clothing and typically in the SE Asia, so I can cinch the crap out if those closet straps. Which is my main criticism of your interview of that bag. Didn’t really look like you really tried to compress the closet much. And in all honesty, I don’t think Solgaard’s products are designed for the casual traveler but more for those that have invested in travel friendly wardrobe. I wonder if modern travel bags will start to feel like phones where there is a style that becomes the standard or something like that and they have an area where they excel, in tortugas case the harness system and adjustability is a standout as well as providing it in a more minimal style vs a hiking or technical bag, whereas peak design has more of a camera focus, etc.
