Hey everyone, just wanted to clarify an extra safety measure here that I forgot to mention in the video. Most vinyls should not be laser cut as they can be very toxic. There are however PVC free vinyls that are laser friendly. You can also always cut the acrylic separate from the vinyl and then use something like a Cricut to cut the vinyl out to then add to the acrylic piece. It’s always best practices to do your research before attempting to use a new material on a laser engraver to make sure that it is safe to use on the machine. Stay safe and have fun creating!

There are multi color acrylics that when you burn through the top layer shows a different color in the engraved area. I have seen silver and black ones. For future projects look for those.

You’re so good at these “tutorial” type videos. You oughta start a Crafting University. I wonder how long the commute from South Carolina would be. 😉

Haha, thanks! Probably will be easiest to stick to “online classes”.

Laser cutters are awesome until you get a sudden light burn error you can’t figure out.

Since you asked about painting before or after assembly for projects; the answer is, it depends. I prefer to paint then assemble. However some say the glue changing the paint color is a problem as well as glue not adhering as well. I have not had a problem at all.

Personally, i consider a beginner friendly laser engraver the ones that already have a built in enclosure that automatically shuts off the laser when it is opened and resumes immediately after it is closed. this is to protect your eyes, which can be irreparably damaged if exposed by the laser light be even a fraction of a second. there are multiple laser brands and models that have this feature, but the most affordable one is the Genmitsu L8, followed by the Roly Lasermatic MK2.

Another toxic fume to be worried about is tanned leather. Please make sure to used vegetable based colored or tanned leather. Once again, one can buy leather specifically for laser cutting.
I also recommend laser glasses, for more safety.
Also because I am a member of a Makerspace and have seen things:
    1) never leave a running laser unattended.
    2) fire extinguisher or fire blanket next to the laser
Yes, the two are related to each other. No it wasn’t me.

Great tips, thank you! I’ll definitely have to check all of the dyes that I use for any of my leatherwork to make sure they’d be safe.
And absolutely to all of the safety precautions! While I would hope that my one video wouldn’t be the start and finish to someone’s laser engraver research, I’ll have to make sure that I specifically mention best safety practices in any future videos just so everyone stays as safe as possible. Especially because a lot of the things don’t automatically come across on video without it being explicitly stated.

@@MMsPropShop I think you did a good job. There is way more stuff to cover than just the basics. I shared stuff like the leather issue because that isn’t obvious and is related to cosplay and props. You know, don’t want you hurting yourself because then what would ai watch?
Lots of these can be huge rabbit holes. My opinion, and I am the first to say feel free to ignore it, is that you include the non obvious things, and say read owner’s manual.

Isn't laser cutting vinyl extremely toxic? Hence why cricutters, vinyl cutters are made?

Thanks! I did end up filming building him for a short that I will hopefully get around to editing within the next week or so. This is the file I used and scaled it to 140%: www.thingiverse.com/thing:5318264
Due to the scale and because I decided to print him fully in resin, his joints are unfortunately a bit loose which has stopped him from standing up well on his own, hence the need for the stand.

@@MMsPropShop cutting vinyl is a nono though, at least if its actual pvc, becasue that stuff releases chlorine gas.
