I played with the Austin Symphony in 1955 under Ezra Rocklin. I was playing tuba for the University of Texas concert band and loved the experience with the symphony too. I had arranged to study conducting with Mr Rocklin but went broke and and had to drop out of school at the end of the season. Fund raising event that year included Lyndon Johnson among others at the waltz night fund raiser. Guild president was Commodore Perry and for a short while I worked on his hotel which was expanding. Austin newspaper was going to do an article on me, playing tuba at night and working by day on the hotel penthouse but the musician's union, under Petrillo, would not allow it.
My father, rip, played trumpet there for a short time, I'm not sure exactly when; he was also in the Navy band in-between WWII & Korea...
I hope to go with my cousin to their Handel's Messiah!
What fantastic work. Music ennobles the soul! 🎵🎼🎶👏👏👏👏👏🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🙏🇧🇷
