      I appreciate your comment! And I think you're absolutely right. If you're looking for validation about your videos, it's likely it's not going to come anytime soon, so you have to start with the foundation of being determined to do it regardless of what happens. That's the only way you can get far enough to let the magic work.

    Hello James and thanks for making this video about an unusual YT topic. I found myself almost nodding my head in agreement at one point. While not a question, I would like to enlarge the topic for 'discussion' here: how the so called content creator then interacts with the comments about the video.
    There are some videos (by others) where the channel owner speaks with phrases like " lets have a discussion" or "leave your comments below" and you, the viewer thinks 😀 awesome ... and writes a somewhat thoughtful and responsive comment and not just writes "awesome video bro"
    What happens next? Well on at least one channel I follow the content creator typically writes replies like " Thanks for sharing" AND THAT'S ALL that that creator writes in response to most (95%) of the comments he receives even when said creator has asked "tell me about your experiences in the comments below" it is just like pulling a heavy wet blanket over all the comments even the ones that were a bit thoughtful and tried to be engaging back.
    James, have you ever noticed this on other channels? Sorry about the length but short of making a video in reply that is about as short a comment I could write and still address issues you brought up and making my comment a bit engaging in return. Note the question 😉 posed...
    Addendum: what's with "11031" that you wrote at the end of your description of this video? And will my comment about that 6 digital "code" (that I hope you do not remove! otherwise what does my comment look like!) get viewers of your channel to read your description on this video...something they might not otherwise read? So many specific questions.. 😇

      Epic comment! The real truth behind people requesting comments is that UA-cam perceives it as a sign that people are engaged and interested in a video. The more comments it has, the more likely UA-cam is to promote the video in other people's feeds. In many cases, especially for larger channels, the creator may actually be pretty burned out on trying to respond to comments. It's likely that they're using the pre-written "quick response" comments that UA-cam allows them to insert at the tap of a button.
      That's not all creators, obviously, but that's a big part of the reasoning behind why you often see them ask for likes and comments and all that.
      As for the number, that's really just for my own tracking. When I go back through old videos, I'm sometimes curious to remember where my channel was in the arc of its growth when I posted that video. So it's the number of subscribers I had at the time when I posted. That's the secret behind the number. 😄

      Or they just never answer or only answer to like 5 people ever. Quite common.
      I eventually realized that looking friendly and engaging in a video and *to be* engaging in the comments are two different skills and some people only have the former. Some only have the latter but are unlikely to get comments because their videos aren't that engaging ;) There is some sad irony in this.

    • @RealJamesArcher
      @RealJamesArcher  Рік тому +2

      @@TechieSewing Totally true! Those are very different things. And one of them's a lot harder than the other one, but that also means the benefit is that much greater. I've always had a natural aversion to fakery, so that stuff has always bugged me.

    • @joestrahl6980
      @joestrahl6980 Рік тому +1

      @@TechieSewing I think that you got that one right: some of the channel owners can be engaging and communicative in the video but lack a similar ability with texts. And some of them may not realize their shortcomings but keep asking for comments below...

    Awesome video! 👍 Haha but seriously, I don't think I've ever seen a youtube video talking about this. I like the part about asking a question. Sometimes if I get an idea, I'll ask a video request from the youtuber. Sometimes I get responses saying that they'll make a video based on my question. UA-cam is censorship friendly and is a monster, but there's good to it too.

    • @RealJamesArcher
      @RealJamesArcher  Рік тому

      That's a great point, and I actually forgot to cover that one. Some of my very favorite comments are the ones suggesting possible topics, because otherwise I'm sitting here brainstorming into the void, and never knowing if people are going to care about a topic or not. There have been videos I could swear people would love and they get no views, and then I'll make one about an obscure technical topic and it winds up going huge. Any feedback about topics is super helpful, so if you have any, I'd love to know!

    That was an insightful topic. I find that comments give me the motivation to keep making videos when I lose sight of why I started my channel. How do you get a background like that? Is it one of those roll up ones?

    • @RealJamesArcher
      @RealJamesArcher  Рік тому +2

      In all honesty, I shot this with a green screen because I didn't have a good shooting location at the time, and then I just swapped it out with a four color background generator in DaVinci Resolve. I was going to try to swap it out with something more realistic but realized I was spending too long worrying about it and so I just swapped it out for that and hoped it would be good enough. 😂

    Greetings from Sydney, James. My G.P. encouraged me to post videos to my several UA-cam channels strictly on the condition that I turned comments off. So I have never received a comment on what I share. Love your work. You have gone quiet on this channel - does that mean you are instead putting your energies into other creative outlets like a second series of JijiColony?

    I subscribed because of this video. Personally, I run a channel devoted mostly to developing Telekinesis or other 'powers'. After reading something from a consulting email newsletter that explained the power of building a community through questions... I tried to model my own channel more along those lines. Because I want to actually do something with my channel which will serve as marketing for a mentoring business I've been working on for the past year or so... I take this kind of thing pretty seriously.
    I still feel I suck at marketing and sales; but am slowly getting better. Such as making this comment as short as it is; and not a whole freakin' story!
    Thanks for the advice my friend.

    This is a great thing to talk about because it teaches people to be genuinely committed instead of apathetic. It's also something I tried doing when I was reviewing fanfiction of my friends that really needed reviews for encouragement and told them "IDK what to say, your writing is just good" and one of them said "Then pick your one or two favorite things in the chapter and say specifically that they were in addition to "good chapter" and that's good enough." and not only did it keep me engaged with leaving reviews, but it helped them to write more than just "good chapter" did.
    Anyway, what do you do when you want to explain something that you have more knowledge about or you've discovered is false or has been debunked within a video's content? And in addition to that, how best can you tell a creator that there's something else wrong with their video, perhaps on the technical side such as their volume being to low or their video settings being sub-optimal?

  • @RoyAlf
    @RoyAlf Рік тому

    Damn it, you had to do that, I have to write a comment now. I need something easy and memorable, right, no pressure, just think about something helpful, that could provoke some intense conversations between creator and audience. Nope, no idea what to write.

    Thought provoking video! By the way I’m bald like you and want to know how you get the lighting to not bounce off the glasses and head? Not asking for a friend lol.

    • @RealJamesArcher
      @RealJamesArcher  Рік тому +1

      Haha it's just all about angles. In a perfect situation 45 degrees off center is usually a good bet for lighting, but because of my glasses I often swing them out wider (more to my sides than in front) and that generally helps. Also, softer light (bigger diffusion) will tend to reduce some of the harsh glare. Good luck!

    Great video! Gonna completely ignore all the advice on getting specific and just ask why 11031 is in the description

    • @RealJamesArcher
      @RealJamesArcher  Рік тому +1

      I'm amazed that people actually look in the descriptions! Usually UA-cam hides them so much that I assume nobody ever sees that stuff. The number is just a reference for myself of the number of subscribers I had when I posted that video, so I can go back and look at my older videos I have some context for where that was in my channel's history. The actual subscriber count isn't that important in the grand scheme of things, for reasons I explain in another video, but it can be a useful good proxy metric for where a channel is in its life cycle. Thanks for asking!
