Aherusia, Eldingar and Mystras are three black metal bands but with a lot of Greek elements. Sunburst , Mother of Millions and NEED are three great progressive metal bands from Greece as well
Dead Congregation, a death metal band are probably my favourite from Greece. They are phenomenal live too 👍🏻 hopefully will get new album from them sooner rather than later.
Hi John!!! Well done and cool greek band's spotlight..... i only familiar with Suicidal Angels and Firewind, but it really seems this type of music is alive and well over there another cool band i have in my collection is Dexter Ward a traditional heavy metal band. Btw you might do a video about bands from France (80's HM), Belgium... cheers and be well
Thanks. France is another good one because I think the only one I know is the big one Gojira, but I'm sure they have a lot of other good ones and Belgium is interesting. I can't think of any bands off the top of my head from Belgium, so I'll consider those two. I'll do a Google search and maybe I'll do a video on them later on.
Great video!! Check out the legendary Flames the first greek thrash metal act since 1984. "Summon the dead" and "Prophecy of doom" are very underrated black/thrash gems!
You have to listen to Wardrum, Horizons End, Dead Congregation, Sacred Outcry, Star.Gate, Doomocracy, Sunburst, the newcomers White Tower, Leatherhead and Stygian Oath. Certainly the veteran Cypriots, Arrayan Path with their singer and founder Nikos Leptos who also sang for Warlord...and the Finn power metallers Graven Sin. The first and only so far album from Crosswind, called Vicious Dominion is also a treat and a must have for fans of european power metal. Prog metallers Until Rain and Psycrence too!. One band that has unfortunately disbanded was Fatal Morgana with their EP In Quiet Us, back in 2010. Also a power/thrash band called Deceptor, with one of the best singers of (not only) the Greek metal scene, John Koutselinis, who later on went on to sing for the 5th album Heathen Machine of Brit power/prog metallers Balance of Power and afterwards formed his own band Biomechanical in UK.
My recommendation is the three bands, which I consider to be the definition of "born in the wrong place and the wrong time". Spitfire and their 1986 album "First attack", Sarissa and their 1987 demo and Deceptor and their 1989 demo. I believe that if these bands were from England or Germany they would have had a remarkable career. As for newer bands, apart from the already recommended Achelous, I would recommend Triumpher and their 2024 album "Spirit invictus" as well as 2 bands from Cyprus, Solitary Sabred and their 2023 album "Temple of the serpent" and Receiver and their 2023 album "Whispers of lore".
A well-chosen list. Septicflesh is one of my favorite bands, and their live album Infernus Sinfonica MMXIX is one of the best live albums ever. Rotting Christ is also an amazing band, and they are incredible live. I really like Suicidal Angels. Thou Art Lord is another interesting project by Sakis Tolis. Greece has many other great bands like Macabre Omen, Firewind, Kawir...
Thanks. There are a lot of other bands that I am intersted in checking out. I need to listen to Thou Art Lord, it sounds like something that I would like.
I don't see anyone mentioning them in the comments, sorry if I missed something. Dødsferd (black metal) Hail Spirit Noir (experimental black metal) Abyssus (death metal) Mass Infection (death metal) Downwinder (death metal/crust) Check any albums you like but I'd suggest the latest of any of the above. I could add more, especially if you are interested in metal fused with crust punk, grindcore etc. and also depending on whether you can tolerate the words being in Greek and finally if you are also interested in bands not active anymore. But just check those 5 for now, it's more than enough really. Keep it up and cheers from Greece!
Great deep dive into the Greek Metal scene John! I've heard of a few of these, I'm seeing Rotting Christ next year with Behemoth. Suicidal Angels are a band I've wanted to check out for a while, the Greeks are good at Thrash! I think you're right, their Black Metal is different compared to other countries. I know Gus G from Ozzy, he's a great guitarist. A few of these I don't know too which is cool, nice one! Maybe you could do other European countries like Italy and Netherlands, that'll be cool 😁🤘🏻
Some other recs for you: The Temple - trad doom with amazing vocals (sounds like bysatine orthodox chants)... if you're into traditional doom metal sound - they are a must listen Agnes Vein - modern doom/black Human Serpent - black metal SAD - black metal
An excellent greek prog metal band to check out is NEED \m/ Ps: Nightstalker is more like a Monster Magnet type of band nowadays, even though they started as a thrash metal band. Actually they both started in the same year but a couple years after Fu Manchu and Kyuss, and not the other way around :)
Great list. Check Doomocracy and their album "visions and creatures of imagination". They play some short of epic doom metal (not slow, chugging doom) and they are a different flavour from the (great) black/death metal bands of your list
Rotting Christ is really the only greek one I'm familiar with and they do sound unique. In fact some Norwegian black metal bands have credited Greece for being one of the most original black metal bands outside of the Scandinavian countries.
@jcrockandmetalreviews I've always liked the ones from Sweden better than Norway. Not that there's much difference between the two countries but the swedish ones seem different instrumentally lol
Hi mate good work I'll try to give these a listen, I like stoner so give Planet of Zeus and 1000 mods a try, when I stumbled across Greek metal bands I went wtf how when where , Metal is for everyone.
I am familiar with 1000 mods becuase they recently put out an album. I only listened to one song from Planet of Zeus after reading this comment. They were similar to the band Clutch.
If you like rock music (i mean more classic rock music ) then I would highly recommend to listen to Aphrodite's Child (Vangelis Papathanasiou, the known modern synth electronic composer/ pioneer known to anyone as "Vangelis", was playing in this band. It is not very well known but they were one of the influences of Pink Floyd...). Then I would recommend also "Trypes" (they have some more "post - punkish" characteristics) they sing only in Greek. It is a f*cving great band. They have unbelievable guitar and bass sections and rhythm (and very good lyrics but they sing in Greek as I said). In Greece they were legendary in the 90's. "Socrates" also is another very good rock band with a great guitar player (one of the best guitar players in Europe ever). There are many more excellent bands (like Xylina Spathia, Diafana Krina, and Pyx Lax etc ) but many sing in Greek and they have a Greek Rock sound -vibe (some sound a little "pop-ish") that may not interest you if you are more in the metal sound, but they worth. If you are on post punk and you like that style check also Fear Condition and Metro Decay (the last one defently, they have put out some diamond albums. There are many more, like Dreamer and the Full Moon, but they are more on new wave post punk "pop" sound with a Greek sound. But they are freaking great ) Also check "Villagers of Ioannina City" they combine Greek folk music with stoner rock/ metal. They have put out some great songs. Their last one album had very positive feedback and is considered one of the best rock / metal albums of that year by many (but personally I prefer their older stuff because of the traditional folk sound) . Ps. From Septic Flesh defently check "Revolution DNA " (for me their best album ) and "Sumerian Daemon" (both are masterpieces. From Rotting Christ defently check "A dead poem", "Sleep of the angels " , "Triarchy of the Lost Lovers" and "Khronos" (all dark masterpieces). Ps 2. No directly related to rock and metal music but if you are more open in your listenings , listen also to Psarantonis and other quility Greek singers from folk to quility pop to "artistic " or "cultural folk" modern Greek music (this is a whole different region and would need a special mention ) and rebetika music. There is so much great Greek modern music to discover and dive one. I would recommend more to search one those ruther to stay too much only on the more rock or metal stuff that one already has heard such kind of music.
Ps 3. Aphrodite's Child - 666 album, is a monumental masterpiece of psychedelic rock music. Is as good or better than any Pink Floyd album (but it needs some listenings and the old way....)
THE GREEK BLACK METAL WAS FORMED DURING THE SECOND WAVE OF BLACK METAL ( NORWEGIAN SWEDISH FINNISH AND GERMAN). THERE ARE A LOT OF SONGS WICH WERE INSPIRED BY THE GREEK MYTHOLOGY OR THE ANCIENT GREEK HISTORY. MY FAVOURITE GREEK METAL BAND IS FIREWIND BECAUSE I AM A FAN OF POWER METAL MUSIC. ROTTING CHRIST IS THE BEST BLACK METAL BAND IN SOUTH EUROPE ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA. MY FAVOURITE SONG FROM FIREWIND IS WORLD ON FIRE WHICH IS RELEVANT AT THIS PERIOD.
Check if you want in yr "Trypes - De Xoras Pouthena" to listen to some guitar and bass, and rhythm section - an example (it doesnt allow the direct link)
Rotting Christ are great and have lasted through time…It is great to see old bands like Septic Flesh and Rotting Christ still producing great albums.
Yeah, that's true. They are both still going strong.
Great video, thank you! Dead Congregation (with two full length's and two EP's) is probably the best band that are coming from Greece.
Thanks I will check them out soon
Aherusia, Eldingar and Mystras are three black metal bands but with a lot of Greek elements. Sunburst , Mother of Millions and NEED are three great progressive metal bands from Greece as well
Thanks. I'll keep them all in mind if I ever do a follow-up.
Dead Congregation, a death metal band are probably my favourite from Greece. They are phenomenal live too 👍🏻 hopefully will get new album from them sooner rather than later.

Ignominus black metal top
Macabre Omen is a must. Please listen to the song :From son to Father!

@jcrockandmetalreviews You're welcome! Ah ok that's cool, nice! Yeah that'll be cool to see one on Italy, January sounds good too! 😁🤘🏻
Rotting Christ, Suicidal Angels, Septicflesh and Firewind were the only Greek bands I recognized. The rest are new to me.
Yeah, I was the same as you going into this, although I didn't really know Firewind that much.
Some other recs for you:
The Temple - trad doom with amazing vocals (sounds like bysatine orthodox chants)... if you're into traditional doom metal sound - they are a must listen
Agnes Vein - modern doom/black
