  • ‘The Ball that Changed a Town’ is the Story of the Chicopee Golf Ball Plant. This 30 minute documentary explains how one of the first golf ball manufacturing facilities in the world has managed to completely re-invent itself under the ownership of Callaway Golf to create the most modern ball production in the world; securing hundreds of local jobs in the process. The story is told by the long-time employees of the facility and is narrated by Chris Harrison.

It’s a local story, an innovation story and a manufacturing story rolled up into a ball.
Our golf ball plant in Chicopee, Massachusetts has been synonymous with ground breaking technology since the 1770s when the first skilled craftsmen came to the area to work for the National Armory under the direction of President Washington. History is ingrained in the walls of our Chicopee facility, which has been producing golf balls since 1915.
Already the fastest growing major golf ball company since 2013, over the last three years - under President & CEO Chip Brewer - Callaway has invested $50M to modernize the Chicopee facility with state-of-the art machinery, adding advanced engineers and technical processes. This investment has resulted in the most modern ball facility in the world, spurred the technology behind the PGA TOUR’s lowest official score of 58, and now, our highest quality and most consistent golf ball, Chrome Soft.
The $50M+ investment in the our Chicopee Ball Plant has completely revolutionized golf ball manufacturing processes and engineering. Our factory modernization has yielded a 60% increase in personnel, introduced automated robots to golf ball production, and implemented the first three dimensional X-Ray process to measure ball construction and core concentricity. We have devoted ourselves to making the highest quality and most consistent TOUR ball on the market.

Is this the same plant the bad Chrome Soft ball came out of? You know the ones where the center was out of line.

Glad to see local companies expanding and reinvesting in their companies. I've worked in a few manufacturing plants in Western MA as a Machine Operator, Assembler, Material Handling, etc. That is where I see companies should invest more in within, with management, new/better equipment, and take more advice from employees. When the company takes insight from employees and evaluates what needs improvement on the floor that's when growth happens and when employees go above and beyond.

I recently retired from FlexLink Systems. Those are FlexLink conveyors you see here transporting the golf balls and boxes of balls. And yes, I play Callaway golf balls and hit the Callaway Epic driver and 3 wood.

What do you think about Callaway? Is it uniquely better than other golf companies?

Mohammed Ahmed Hamid I have played all the “soft” low compression balls and they all perform the same. Callaway, Srixon, Oncore, etc.

Nice Video... the 2022 Chromesoft X has been my ball of choice this year. Triple Track was a very innovative feature as well.

Lot of negativity in the comments, but Chrome Soft is definitely my favorite feeling ball. Just all around feels good to hit throughout the club range. Are there better performing balls? Probably. But feel is such an important part of golf. It's what keeps people coming back to the game. Well that and results, but when I hit a good shot my golf buddies will say "that looks good" and my reply is usually, "it definitely felt great"... this is before the ball lands.

Callaway are under pressure after a 2019 that showed their balls were of poor build quality and that soft compression does mean less distance, unless you sacrifice spin rate like the Wilson duosoft. The indipendent testers showed them up. It's going to take a few years to get market confidence back. Their own promo vid is just that. Let's see how they test independently for a few years and if they can improve ball speed and keep spin rate. Good luck.

They have to invest $50million in a ball plant, meanwhile Titleist just keeps doing their thing. The right way, the first time, every time! I find more Callaway balls in the woods than anything. The balls are popular but very inconsistent!

Lot of BS in this. I wonder if they would have ever invested an extra dime if My Golf Spy hadn't shown everyone how bad their product was, especially for the price.

I appreciate the information. Am glad to see that the town still has the facility and employment. I applaud you guy's for not moving elsewhere. Obviously, you are going to receive criticism for this video as it looks like an attempt to save face after MGS's findings. However, you deserve a chance to course correct and improve the standards of a ball that alot of golfers love. Truthfully, I stopped gaming it after the report came out but am willing to give it another shot. Why wouldn't those who love this ball, not be open to buying it again if you are improving quality control? Not to mention supporting an American made product. The word is you have been transparent with MGS and we all know they will test the hell out of this ball. So, hopefully your efforts pay off guy's. It's never too late to be better. Plus, it's a damn good feeling ball and I suspect people will buy it regardless.
