Is The Lion King 1 1/2 Worth It? - Movie Review -

- The Lion King 1 1/2 or the Lion King 3 Hakuna Matata if you live anywhere that isn't America is the last movie in the Lion King franchise. As this is Julion month I have to talk about this movie! This is both a prequel and a midquel to the original Lion King showing events that happened before the movie started as well as alternate events during the film. All of this is from Timon and Pumbaa's perspective!! But is the movie worth it or is it another bad Disney Sequel?
When Timon can't bear to live another day as a Meerkat, because he fails at it. He wants to go his own way and find something better for himself. Rafiki sees him and tells him to go beyond what he sees to find Hakuna Matata.
Timon takes this quite litterally and tries to go over the horizon, where he bumps into Pumbaa. The two become fast friends and they travel together showing events from the original film but in their perspective. Like did you know that the animals bowed to Simba at his birth because Pumbaa farted?
There are plenty of these jokes throughout the movie as well as some original music like the DIgga Tunnah Dance which is pretty catchy. They also use some of the old music but most of the time it's to make fun of it.

I honestly really enjoyed this movie because I grew up watching the Timon and Pumbaa cartoon show and this felt like a big budgeted movie version of that
I grew up watching it as well and was looking forward to this movie starring them. I would have preferred if it was more like the show though, zany and silly adventures instead of a rehash movie.
I like it
I mean Simba's still their "bachelor bro" as you call it because they are basically adults, and Simba when they took him in, he was still a cub with little to no knowledge in how to take care of himself. Only then in Simba's matured state did they accept and see him as a friend.
As they are all bachelors and living that “hang out and do stupid things with your friends” part of their lives in the first movie I would assume that Timone and Pumbaa (as they don’t change) raised him that way. But from this movie it adds more of a paternal side that isn’t shown in the original. While it makes some sense I think they went too far and turns them from best friends to more a mother/father dynamic.
Just like how Timon 's backstory was going to be used in the first film, another element of Timon's role was Timon's refusal to help Simba at first was also a delated scene for the first movie , through in that one it takes just Simba . Nala and Pumbaa leaving then he goes after them immediately while in 1 1/2 it takes till nightfall
I didn’t know that idea came from the first film. I’m glad they changed it, it makes it much easier to like the characters that way
@@Lytane There's a lot of things I want to counter-argue about your view on the movie (as you're seeing it as two separate stories and not one continuous tale).
1. I didn't mind Timon's backstory in the actual film, as they're trying to explain in the simplest way possible that he lived a sheltered life and doesn't like it, especially when they're the lowest member on the food chain (with only one level above grub); he even points out how ridiculous it is. ("I was just trying to shed a little light on our pathetic existence. All we do is dig so we can hide, and hide so we can dig. I wanna be where we don't have to dig tunnels and live with our heads stuck in the sand.") At least his motivation is more justifiable than Ariel's, as he wasn't just thinking about himself sometimes, he thought his family deserved better as well, but they're too preoccupied with being underground. By the end of his story, after finding out what "Hakuna Matata" really means, he actually did a selfless act by giving up his dream home to all the meerkats in his family to live a better life. He really made his Ma proud.
2. While it's understandable that Timon and Pumbaa shouldn't view themselves as "step-parents" in the original, I think it's also understandable as to why Simba would be raised by Timon and Pumbaa while they learn to be parents; and it's not just because of pro-gay stuff, but it's also because Simba was exiled by Scar, who lied about Mufasa's death, even goes as to say Simba's mother would be appalled if she found out. So, with the addition of a moment where Simba told Timon he had a bad dream, possibly the one where Mufasa died in the stampede (something you ignored to bring up, BTW), this new detail was earned; especially since it would feel weird to have two grown adults treat a child like an adult, in a situation where that child is coping with his father's death and having the guilt of being a murderer. And really, who would want Timon and Pumbaa to make Simba into a bachelor immediately when one of the first things Timon did was make a joke while Simba is still depressed (Timon knows Simba is depressed, but didn't know it was for something else).
3. While it does seem like the use of Timon's Ma was underutilized, that's not the main focus of the story. The focus was on Timon struggling to live out his life, both from his original family and his new lifestyle. Not to mention, Timon didn't wanna feel like a mama's boy in a time when no one understands what he's struggling with. Timon even said "Nobody even likes me; besides you, Ma" as if he knows that his Mother was the only person who likes him, but he feels that it's not enough. Besides, with very little screentime we have of Timon's Ma, I think she seems like a nice character. Very nurturing, even if she gets a bit protective if she believes her own son is going a path that leads to death. She reminds me of my Grandmother as I had to deal with the same stuff that Timon had to deal with over a parent who gets protective. It is nice, however, that his mother cleaned him up a bit, as Timon has been praised as a hero for preventing the Hyenas to protect Scar (who are probably at the same ground level as Scar would be when they're gathering to attack him, upon hearing he's projecting his lies to them, which I'm guessing since the other three at the top already hearing it, went down to tell the other hyenas about it).
4. Honestly, I don't care how long they've been friends, because that's not the point either. Some friendships already started before others meet that same bunch, and you wouldn't notice that their friendship was genuine when you meet them, as you just met them at a point where they just started to connect. And yeah, it is kinda strange how Timon and Pumbaa didn't age, but Simba is; which is as ridiculous as comparing Mario's age with Cranky Kong, a popular theory that ignored the fact that Modern DK actually made his debut in Game Boy Donkey Kong, a few months before Donkey Kong Country was released.
5. The people who made 1 1/2 intentionally used "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" and "Mystery Science Theater 3000" as inspiration for the plot and framing of the movie, and I accepted the fact that they went this direction to be much different from other Disney Sequels and Midquels.
With that, I say it's TOTALLY worth it. It's not a bad sequel like "Simba's Pride" where they throw-in verbal retcons with no evidence backing up their claim, and it's not as contrived as that, B&TB the Enchanted Christmas, or even An Extremely Goofy Movie, where they completely ignored pre-established facts about the characters we knew about through out the story. Timon and Pumbaa had barely enough screentime to be memorable, but not worth having a TV show telling us why (ironic, considering they replaced Disney's take on the Marsupilami franchise that they rejected immediately); however, the midquel did a good job at establishing how far they are in the storyline to earn that friendship, through a sense of trust and character growth. So yeah, Lion King 1 1/2; I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the original.
@@robbiewalker2831Wow I was surprised by how extensive you said, let's see
1well, I was curious to know Timon's story until I saw the sequel as a child. Before, I thought he was just a meerkat with which Pumba bumped into. Also, underneath, Timon did have a good heart and he did think something about others too.: when he dreamed of that better home for everyone in his tribe; also when he was about to give up, feeling that he was dragging Pumbaa he decides to let him go and that he will not stop him, until he discovers Pumbaa actually followed him willingly because he was all alone without family and without direction and he was all he had, it encouraging him to not giving up;
2 And thanks to Pumba and Simba, Timon learned to be more unselfish; for me it was a unique bond (they were both family and friends), well Timon made a joke to Simba with the intention of cheering him up but he is too depressed, and even Timon also tried to make him feel better about that being an outcast isn't that bad, like them. Plus I feel like treating Simba well, Timon did it because he was really good natured and not just because Pumbaa asked him to or it was his idea.. They never treated him as an adult when they met him he was a child, they even called him "kid."
*It broke my heart when Timon refused to help Simba, choosing to stay in his paradise, but at the same time it makes me appreciate it more when he tells him: "If it's important for you, we are with you to the end"
3 and Timon's Mom is a likeable character for me, even with just a few minutes, she loved, defended and even supported her son, when with all the pain in her heart and even though she didn't want him to leave her, she let him go understanding that he didn't feel happy where he was because he didn't fit in. I also think because of it from her, Timon learned to let Simba go and to shape his life more: return to his kingdom and form his own family with Nala, but that does not mean that they do not remain friends and they are always close there for him.
4It seems Timon and Pumbaa had been friends for almost a long time when they met (there is a little problem with the timeline)
*maybe it has some flaws or discrepancies when it is intertwined with the main story, but that does not mean it is not one continuous tale, they are not 2 separate stories I think
As a child, I was always interested in knowing Timon's backstory, and if they had put it inthe first movie, it wouldn't have taken me by surprise. Inthe deleted scene, Timon actually was reluctant for Simba to return because he doesn't want him to die. But here he feels that he "left them", It was something that impacted me since I didn't see it coming, I thought it would continue like inthe first movie, but it also makes me understand that the decision to go help Simba was not that direct, since it was a mission of life or death, but also without this, we wouldn't have had Timon learning that lesson to let go of his selfishness and this makes me appreciate him more when he says: "If it's important to you, we are with you to the end", since he was leaving behind his dream and life with no worries
I honestly enjoy this movie a lot, I enjoyed this review
I can see why, it’s not bad but not my thing I guess! Thanks!!!
Yes. Midquel is a word. I’ve heard others say it.
Ok cool, I even googled it after the review to make sure hahahaha 🤣
Your channel is honestly super underrated, great video as always!
Thanks!! Now I have a goofy smile on my face 😁
I know it's a musical movie but the amount of time it takes for Timon to make a song is quite prodigious. Maybe that's why he's bad at being a normal meerkat because he's ambitious and very talented, and only limited to what he is.
100% agree! That should have been his story arc, him making a musical on the spot lol
I feel it was to show Timon was different from the other meerkats in his tribe, because it is talented
I really liked this movie.
That’s awesome! I can see why as well but too many little things took away from my enjoyment of the film.
I love it too
I think this movie is worth seeing, if you know the story of the first movie. As a child I enjoyed it, it felt like it added more and at the same time it gives the opportunity for Timon and Pumbaa, the comic characters, to have more depth and not only be telling jokes, but also have moments when they get serious; In addition to getting to know Timon more: his backstory that I was always interested in knowing, and his journey in which he meets Pumbaa as a buddy and over time they become best friends, and he had both his flaws and qualities (he did have a good heart and learned to be more empathetic and selfless since at first he was a little self-absorbed), and watching them raise Simba is wholesome hilarious, I really would have liked the paternity scene to be longer: it's cute how they get attached to him and they did take care of him from the trouble he could get into and when he needed them; although it broke my heart when Timon and Pumbaa argued when Timon refused to help Simba for his kingdom, it moved me when in the end Timon realized that in reality all the time his Hakuna Matata, was what made him happy, were Pumbaa and Simba; because Hakuna Matata without friendship is nothing.
This film really annoys me. The timeline thing really bugs me and then being present (and even causing) some major events feels cheap and imo serves to cheapen the events overall. But the sequence where they're living with Simba is awesome and should have been the WHOLE movie.
You and I see eye to eye on this. It is a novel idea of them being around certain events but not the greatest. I agree that the main focus should have been with Simba growing up. You could still see the start and meeting of Pumbaa then the rest is in the jungle. But sadly, this is what we got!
The only issue I really have is that the Scar fight scene from the first movie and the Hyena fight scene from this movie aren't really chronologically compatible, which kind of ruins the whole point of the movie. But other than that I like the concept.
The whole bit with the skylight wasn't intentional. Timon screwed up digging a tunnel (again), but because he was embarrassed, he tried to play it off as though he meant to do it that way all along. Of course, nobody believed him.
Do you think Scar knows of the hyenas attacking the meerkat colony ; through given how indifferent and uncaring to them being hungry, during his time as king and half-hardly offered them Zazu to eat who would only be at best a light snack for just one , he most likely doesn't really care what they do on their free time .
I didn't mind Timon being like a step-dad to Simba as he and Pumbaa are the adults so it would make sense for them to be responsible for him plus maybe Timon as a 'll scratch your back you scratch mine " thinking if they take care and be nice to Simba he'll truly be on their side . Plus I think you should have mentioned that part where Simba as a bad dream ( Of you know what of) and Timon lets the young cub sleep with them .
That’s fair but I still don’t like it. Sure they did raise him but we see how Simba turns out and this doesn’t feel like it would result in the same thing. They are all best friends but if Timon is a parent then the dynamic changes. Maybe a few more scenes showing that shift of paternal to friend would have made it better.
I actually like that scene with the bad dream. Feels real and raw and touches upon themes from the first film. Where this is mostly cheap comedy, that scene is really good. That’s why I think more time should have been spent with that whole section
Yes, and what I like is that Timon and Pumbaa's affection for Simba was never faked, or because it was his idea, and they did get attached to him, and were always there for him.. And yes, I think that the time they spent raising Simba should have been longer, seeing first how they start loving him as if he were an adopted son for them, but when he grows up, they see him as a friend.
@@BG-be8di I have a question do you have a devianart account and what do think of Gravity Falls , Tom and Jerry , Billy and Mandy and Kids Next Door .
I actually love this Disney sequel especially when most of the Disney characters appear at the end.
Thats cool! I remember liking it when I first saw it as the concept of seeing an older movie from a different point of view was so original! And I always loved trying to figure out who was at the end
@@Lytane and Simba's parenthood & Timon & Pumbaa interrupting their flash back story.
A really cool thing you added in is the fact that you used soundtracks from the videogame series of The Lion King, like the Elephant Graveyard level from the SNES game. Genius!
Thanks!! I like to do this with other reviews as well like the Aladdin ones and my new Tarzan ones. I love having music under my critique but want it to feel part of the world while NOT get a copyright strike lol Thus video game music!!
It's gonna sound weird, but I not only enjoy The Lion King 1½ because it's overall very funny and really well-done, but it's especially because of the whole meta-thing of Timon and Pumbaa watching the entire movie by themselves, surprisingly enough.
...
Mostly because I'm a sucker for meta humor like this, and TLK 1½ really hits it for me
Rest in peace Jerry Stiller and Robert guillaume
As I recall Edward Hibbert voices Zazu in this one and in Timon and Pumbaa he's voiced by Michael J. Gough (not to be confused with the actor who played Alfred in the Tim Burton Batman movies).
You are right, also in the cartoon series Edward does do some episodes. Maybe it was a matter of schedule, though I only know that from IMBD lol
Well Timon raised Simba because they are like a family he wants to protect like he does with pumbaa timon doesn't really have responsibility but for the people he loves hes always there also it doesn't matter that they know eachother for a week or a month its about how much do you know him or how much you spend time with him and they spend time alot cause they're bestes best friends
I felt that way too, the 3 of them were not only friends, they were also like a family, and that affection was never faked, and and I like that Timon was always there for those he loved, even though Timon really had no responsibility
You know the part where the other Disney characters show up to watch the movie again why didn't Timon recognize them from House of Mouse ?
Maybe it’s set before house of mouse or maybe they aren’t related. One of those little inconsistencies
Can you believe that Shenzai as the longest name for not Lion King character but DISNEY character in general
What about Cinderella 😁
If you remember Timon says her full name is Shenzai Marie Predatorra Veldatte Jackalina Hyena .
Hahaha I wonder if that is her full name or if Timon was just being silly! If not then yep, what a crazy name!!
I saw this movie a million times because there was absolutely NOTHING to do all day except watch the same DVD's over again. I also played the hell out of the DVD games.
Damn that a LOT of times hahaha you didn't own any other DVDs???? Ahhhh DVD games, I miss things like those. I mean they were mostly bad but we don't get things like that anymore.
With such an expert watch time, do you think the movie was worth it and would you recommend it to other fans of the Lion King?
The Timon and Pumbaa show is still very good.
I've started to rewatch the show now. I was going to get it done for another Ju-Lion month but couldn't so now I can take my time watching it. So far a lot of episodes have been alright. Solid but not great. I hope it keeps this consistency or, hopefully, gets even better. Are there any great episodes I should keep my eye out for?
So is Timon's old Meerkat colony part of Pride Rock's kingdom at one point Ma says that " Everything the light touches ..... Belongs to someone else " But when Timon and Pumbaa first get to Pride Rock they didn't know why everyone was there or what Rafki's holding up
They would be part of the kingdom but looks like that colony wasn’t invited to the reveal party lol
Did you know that orignally Timon and Pumbaa knew who Mufasa were and tried to find him to help them find their dream home?
In fact the orginal Be Prepard instead of a quick shadow gag had the duo come across Scar and the Hyenas after they were done with their song they mistook Scar for his brother and Scar spoke impying it happens often be mistaken for his brother and the main trio tried to attack Timone and Pumbaa but they got away. You can find it on the Lion King wiki but not in the DVD . So it seems Scar was planned to speak and the Hyeans had slightly bigger roles not sure why it was cut maybe it would be confusing on why they would know who Mufasa were .
I had no idea! That sounds like it would have been a very fun scene to see. It must not have gotten far in development if there is no footage of it. I mean most of the film plays with what makes “sense” and doesn’t seem to really care what they do.
But knowing Mufasa would not be strange. He is the king and most citizens know who their leader is. So going up to him to ask for help is not too outrageous.
the main antagonist(s) are the hyenas mostly Shenzai , Banzai and Ed even if they only appeared in two scenes , 3 if you count the Be Prepared bit as them attacking the Meerkat colony is the last reason for why Timon wants to find his dream home , and during the final battle at Pride Rock they serve as a legit threat for Timon and Pumbaa and Timon's Ma and Uncle Max being VERY close to outright eating them if the trap failed . Scar himself becomes the Great Scope Villain ( The main Main Antagonist) do to the main conflict of him ruling the Pride Lands and Simba having to stop him are still there but because there re-telling from Timon and Pumbaa's pov and they never interacted with Scar at all they deal with his hyena army while he is just mentioned and makes silent cameos .
While the hyenas are the main antagonists they aren’t really in the film. Like you said, 2 or 3 scenes at most. They become a “just there” villain which are the laziest type, they don’t really have a purpose in the main film. It would have served the movie better to have a few more scenes with them. The problem though is how much the film banks on your knowledge and nostalgia of the original to flesh out their jokes and even some characters, once again lazy.
It makes me feel like at the same time it is Simba against Scar (main character vs main villain), at the same time it is also Timon and Pumbaa against the hyenas (side characters vs secondary villains, but here in this movie they are both the main ones). Oddly, I get the idea that maybe I don't know if the hyenas would have recognized Timon, from the beginning of the movie when he was the sentinel.
What do you think of more movies doing a 1 1/2 retelling the original movies but from a different character's perspective a imagine the original Star Wars films retold from R2D2 and C3PEO POV or Madagascar retold from the Penguins perceptive ?
A droid-perspective on Star Wars would be pretty fun!
I am not against the idea of telling a movie from another perspective and it can be done well and be fun. Though it's not 100% the same but Back to the Future 2 does this and I loved the movie. So long as you have a strong lead, interesting ideas and don't mess up the execution then I say why not :)
What do you think of the soundtrack Grazing in the Grass ?
It’s a fun song. Not one I’d listen to all the time but not bad. I like the fast “I can dig it she can dig it” and so on parts. What do you think of the song?
I like the Raven version better than the original
Timon and Pumbaa should have a reboot series starring Billy Eichner, and Seth Rogen
For some reason Doug Walker best known as the Nostalgia Critic is the only one to leave out Timon and Pumbaa watching the movie themselves when when he was reviewing 1 1/2 for one of his Dinseycembers .
I know of Doug Walker, he is one of the reasons I started my channel. You are right, I watched his review of the film after I wrote my script to see if there was something that I should have talked about or missed. His review is kinda lame to be honest. Maybe it’s due to him trying to do a very quick review so he just cut lots out. I like his other reviews though!
Are you an absolute lunatic
Scar by Jeremy Irons Jim Cummings Frank Welker James Horan David Oyelowo & Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Another messing up the timeline bit , is during the final battle at Pride Rock there's a major error with the first movie becomes if Timon and Pumbaa had distracted the hyenas than HOW could they hear Scar say they were the villains and the ones to blame as it looks like the hyenas chased the two where they where in the middle of Pride's Rock and most likely Didn't just go up to see if Scar need their help or not as the film suggests that the Hyenas imedialy chased them . Not to mention we don't see what happens to the hyenas after the tunnel trap or Scar after he falls off of Pride Rock now .
Yep! Another mess up! I originally had that in my review as well but I cut it for time, it just went too long. I read online that there MAY be a reason why they heard still but it’s a stretch.
You know it's amazing that Zazu has more line than either Mufasa and Scar .
Yes, Mufasa and Scar don't talk at all in this film.
Great vid
Thanks! Great Comment 😄
Another “Midquel” I grew up with was Tarzan 2, which takes place when Tarzan was a young boy
Disney really just went INSANE during this time. Wasn’t there a Tarzan show when he was a boy as well? It’s been so long, still they did this all to often
Mufasa is voice the original James Earl Jones. Isaac singleton Jr & Gary Williams & the lion role is Frank Welker
because there are in the same studio rafiki literally tell the whole studio
In lion king 1 1/2 Timon voice by the returning Nathan Lane & the Midway point of the film He his voice by Kevin Schon
Are you sure about that? I'm trying to look up and find information to back this up but can't find anything. It looks like he was in the film somewhere but IMBD just lists him as "Voice" I don't remember hearing a difference either.
They have s cartoon series call the lion king Timon & pumbaa animated series from the 90’s
Yeah I know! It ran for like 4 seasons. I haven’t watched it in years but there are some parts that I remember. Like Stand by Me or Lion Sleeps tonight. maybe I’ll have to do JuLion month again next year as there are still a few more things to talk about!
About your talk on how you didn't like how Timon and Pumbaa being like Simba's second parents what if they had just made Pumbaa be the responsible one being worried when ever Simba is up a tall tree while Timon would be relaxed and doesn't really think of the possibilities of Simba getting hurt because of " No Worries ? "
I think that could have worked better but I still think them just hanging out would be enough. I would keep the bad dream part though as it’s a good scene.
Not Worth It 😮 I don’t think I’ve ever seen you give something a not worth it before XD
Hahaha I do from time to time! From your shock do you think I was too harsh on the movie? Would you say it was worth it?
It was worth it though they could have changed the name.
I love this movie!! Knew it by heart by now. I wouldn't change a thing
That's awesome!! When you watch the original Lion King do you think "pumbaa is just behind that rock" because I do a lot of the time, thinking this movie IS happening at the same time
@@Lytane I don't think I ever saw Lion King the original from start to finis:-D . Just clips here and there
Zazu the Bird he is voice Jeff Bennett Rule Ackinson Michael G John Oliver. & mr Edward
Timon is voice by Nathan Lane Jim Cummings Kevin Schon quinton’s Flynn Bruce Lanoil Billy Eichner Jean Puymartin & Japanese actor yuii Mitsuya
Timon Have over 6 English voice actors & pumbaa Have over 4 voice actors in USA .
What do you mean by that? Like including the shows and the live action?
It was 100% worth it
Hahaha you and I have different opinions but if you enjoyed it then that’s great!! I think lion king 2 is the better sequel though
Timon & pumbaa ben Best friends sic the 1994 lion king 1995 lion lion Timon & pumbaa tv series 1998 lion king 2 S P 2004 the lion King 1/2 2008 the lion King Timon & pumbaa Wild about Staved animated show 2008 / 2013 & Disney 2015/2016 the lion Guard animated show & -2019 live action lion king movie that of the lion King franchises
Disney certainly love using them! I’m sure they have been in everything Lion King! Even the games
The lion king 1/2 kinda sucks
I agree, not worth it
