Absolute ransack by the eagles. Crazy what your club got out of this draft considering with what they entered it. Realistically, the eagles couldn’t have done any better I’d say. Edit: Furthermore, you effectively traded pick 3 for Owies, Baker, Bo Allen and Tom Gross (without missing out on Shanahan and Hamish Davis). Suddenly doesn’t look that bad for you anymore.
All things considered, I don’t think WC and fans will regret it, or at least not cry after it a lot. Got two good players which make the team immediately better and will help the young guns to develop, and now this draft with players who are (mostly) ready to go next year and where at least 3-4 of the five players could potentially be pivotal players in a future contender side, whether as stand outs or as useful rol players. Getting two very talented locals is also a big result.
It has the potential in time to make the pick 3 trade feel much more worth it. To me it's about quantity and quality of talent, not always going after a single player who while elite, doesn't make a whole squad of 22. Hopefully we have some great future clubmen here.
Shanahan will end up as a back I reckon (and still think the club is toying with Oscar back). Greggo is a better kick than he gets credit for will end up being a good ball user IMO. Agree on outside quality BUT think this was the perfect draft for the game style Minnie wants to play and then next year focus on outside skilful players.
It's such an odd off season to reflect on. Initially I was really flat after we split pick 3 for well below value even though I am positive on each of the pieces we subsequently acquired from that trade. But now the draft performance has me feeling a fair bit better. Not the most exciting draft but I think we walked away with an assortment of things the list lacks and most of them for seemingly great value considering the picks we got them at. I'm not happy with the hand we entered the draft with, however considering the picks we had I think this is a pretty great result.
I think we ended up ahead. We missed out on 3, but still got Bo Allen who was worth top 10 and Baker / Owies. And remember without us being committed we wouldn't have got Graham and viceversa. Back a few months we had three draft picks in the first four rounds. We ended up getting 5 guys in this draft. Plus we brought in essential talent and leadership. And now we have five picks in the first three rounds next year. You would expect a big cull at end of next season.
I would like West Coast to use that last spot on Claremont’s Clancy Dennis, All-Aust Centre Half Back and with Barrass gone , they can develop him with Hurn as Dev Coach to replace Gov before he retires.
Fantastic analysis as usual. I feel the trades made are wholly justified now, so pleased we did not trade any future picks too, will really set us up for the future. I would not be surprised at all if Mini had a quiet word with the Tigers about Bo and Jobe, a sort of gentleman's agreement. Hardly surprising that Richmond did well in the draft, they had numerous picks all the way through. Happy Birthday Jesse 🎉🎊🥳🎂🍻, Now please get some rest. 💙💛🦅🏆
Everyone we picked up (apart from Lukka) was expected to be picked up far earlier in the draft. I'm quite optimistic that a list is coming together, but we're lacking enough young stars. so 5 picks in the first 3 round next year is very important.
West Coasts Recruiting Manager specifically mentioned that Jobe Shanahan can be a key forward or key defender so maybe they see him as a quality key defender?
He'll be defender for sure and end up replacing McGovern at CHB. Eagles already have tall forwards Allen, JWilliams, Waterman, AReid, BWilliams,... Shanahan would be behind those. Also at WAFL level half of those guys will be in the forward line. Plus you'll have Barnett and Livingstone playing as Ruck forwards, and A Reid and possibly B Williams. The EAgles will get thumped in the Ressies this year badly. Forward line isn't a good spot to be.
Love watching your videos young fella, clearly do a lot of research and your comments are intelligent and practical, and in the interests of the West Coast Eagles. Keep up the good work.
My concerns are very similar to yours mate. I am worried about the fact that we traded our top three pick for a mid teens pick and now we are picking up a lot of players who don’t have good ball use. If you’ve got a pick three, you are more likely to pick up top and talent that haseverything including ball use which is what we need. I think we’re gonna end up in the same situation we have been the last few years, which is people just bombing it forward and hoping for the best.
The Eagles will play a different style anyway. It won't be about possession as much. It will just be forcing turnover and pressure. I still query whether we have the players but the new recruits will help.

I am excited by Jobe Shanahan. He is a good mark and takes it at the highest point. Think he can get games next year if he kicks bags.WAFL team with Shanahan at FF and A.Reid in a pocket with Malakai in the other pocket looks stronger.
Shanahan should be in defence next year at WAFL. Remember Barnett and Livingstone will be probably up forward with A Reid. Then Flynn in the ruck. Or you may even put B Williams up forward too at ressies to learn forward craft.
Kept all of our top picks for next year, added two players with first round grades and some really solid mid round picks. Draft was nailed. Unrelated side note, hearing Liam Baker is setting standards at preseason training meaning he's already showing why you bring him in. Realistically Eagles are a real shot to get out of the bottom four this year
We do but I'd be concerned about fitness of our veterans. That will hurt us. That's why Baker Graham is so important. Saw McGovern at cricket today. Looking very trim. Apparently, he just got married too which will help.
Awesome draft. Aside from Grego we got great value at every pick. Main thing is we have some depth in the middle now. In 3 years once Yeo and Kelly are gone the list of names of guys who could replace them has gotten a bit longer
@user-ln8we1ud9c the trade period wasn't as bad as it seemed if you knew the draft was deep, as we saw. How does that work? We still got unders. The fact that the draft appears to have worked out well for us is neither here nor there. It doesn't alter the balance of the deal for pick 3.
@ I think it’s only okay because the players we were probably going to take at 3 (maybe we would have taken Draper or Smith, but Bo Allan seemed a popular selection) we managed to get anyway with the picks we had, and on top of them we got experience, if not outstanding talent, in Baker and Owies…I’m not saying we’ve smashed it out of the park, but I’m certainly a lot less upset with the trade after the draft.
@@misskirilee You're conflating two separate questions. There's the trade period. And then there's the draft. These are separate considerations. Yes, the draft panned out OK given the picks we had. But that doesn't make the trades better. We traded pick 3 for unders and then overpaid for Baker. The outcome of the draft doesn't alter that. It doesn't make a bad trade any better. Imagine how much better the draft would have looked if we'd had two more second-rounders. That's what we sacrificed with those poor trades.

Wow eagles went from having in my opinion the worst trade period in the club's history to possibly one of its best drafts??? I was not one of these eagles' fans who sugar coated the disaster that was pick 3, it was a terrible trade and still it, however what the eagles did at the draft is excellent. Tom Gross was free. Allen was slightly cheap, Shannahan was the steal of the draft even though he is a key forward he had to be picked on talent, Gross was a bargain, Greco looks good, Davis looks cheap too. Champion to come will cost nothing. So, 5 players picked a good spread and 4 bargains. I think we won the draft and lost the trade period, how that will pan out over the next few years I don't know?? But this draft has instilled hope for me and hopefully many other eagles' fans, it was unexpected to get this good a draft haul given what we went in with and the sliders we picked up.
Would have liked to see Gerreyn take instead of Shanahan. The big body who can also ruck would complement the strengths of Allen and Waterman. And always take the Perth lads first!
Shanahan should be a better player. Don't worry. He will be centre half back. JWilliams BWilliams and AReid are already ruck forwards. Then you have Liingstone and Barnett playing in the forward line as Flynn is rucking in the reserves team.
I am happy with day 2 of the draft. However, the last three years in particular show how an elite mid fielder can make your team immediately better. Daicos, sheezel and Harley are enormous talents. Splitting our pick 2 with north a couple of years ago shows the difference between an elite talent in sheezel and the two lads we picked up. Although I do like both lads, particularly Hewitt. We needed a jagga smith not another Gymbey. Gymbey looked out of sorts this year as a mid, but looked awesome in defence. We needed an elite mid. My rant over. I really hope Bo can cut it as a mid from day 1, cause if he plays down back then it would likely squeeze Hough or Maric out.
Ginbey is only 2 year in. Even Fyfe and Cripps were't dominating in their second year. Let Ginbey build confidence down back and they can always move him forward. If no one is tackling in the middle or forward half (like last year) they will ultimately need him in the middle to provide physical pressure, tackling and pace. I'm surprised they don't use him as a tagger at times. He has the strength and fitness and could really learn by being told to stick on the best player in the league.
@ the point I was making we needed an elite mid who can make an immediate impact not a hybrid mid/defender. As you say it may take years to develop yo be a top mid.
@@MonsoonOzzy Shanahan can be a long term CHB and vitally important that we get one. Plus talls take long. But yes, we need genuine class and pace in the midfield. So that will have to be 2025 and 2026.

Sharts 😂😂
Jobe Shanahan must be really highly rated, as we don't really need another tall forward.
He is very well regarded. But he'll play CHB. We were targeting a tall defender. At the very least he should get plenty of WAFL time there to develop defensive play and to play on good forwards and learn.
@@BDub2024 Might be a bit early to say this with certainty.
@@BigCatinBKK In the league team there are Waterman JWilliams Allen and Maric in the team. Plus BWilliams as a ruck forward. Then in the reserves they have A Reid, Livingstone and Barnett all 200cm plus as ruck forwards. That's seven guys. Plus down back we have a real lack.
@@BigCatinBKK Even in the ressies team he will be behind giants A Reid Livingstone and Barnett and possibly BWilliams if they give him forward ruck time.
@@BDub2024bro in what world is Shanahan behind Livingstone and Barnett 😂😂😂😂 He kicked bags in his 3 games in the VFL against adults. Livingstone and Barnett are absolute crabs
But this draft has instilled hope for me and hopefully many other eagles' fans, it was unexpected to get this good a draft haul given what we went in with and the sliders we picked up.
shanahan will be a defender for the eagles. allen should be wingman in next couple of years.
@@BDub2024 I really like the look of this lad. He has the mobility, marking ability and reads the play well, and could be a great key back or forward. He does have a bit of JK about him. I hope he gets a game early next year. Great pickup.
Does that mean we didn't get Champion?
We got him today!
Malakai takes jordyn bakers cat b list spot we have available mate :)
Bo Allan is the Prince Who Was Promised.
He can end the Long Night.
Did any abos get drafted ?
They will play finals next season.
I recon wafl finals are more realistic and the wafl team is historically bad
Flagcoast 2025!!
And if not let’s hope we lose to Barass
Get some sleep we care about you more then your content if that makes sense🦅🦅🦅
I’m usually let down by drafts, everyone is always a steal and they never make it. Let’s hope it pans out.
