  • Long Weekend in Washington State in 4K - July 2016
Oh wow… what a trip this was! I-5 on the long weekend is a zoo!! Seattle to Olympia took 4 hours instead of one… accidents and traffic are horrendous. Got stuck in my van on the beach and almost got flooded by the tide.. Thankfully 2 Jeep Wranglers (one could not pull me out) saved us  Almost got in trouble with the police in Olympia when I tried flying over the Capitol on the way back… They told me not to fly above campus and I had to comply
Here is a video from the trip. No colour correction and no UA-cam stabilisation. It has been accelerated at some points. I loved the footage so much that I struggled to cut 1 hour of footage to fit those 11 minutes in the clip (do watch in max resolution and sound on - 4K might be difficult to stream on slow connections)
Notes and observations from my flying of the DJI Phantom 4
The DJI Phantom 4 drone is amazing. Stable and reliable. No glitches (except for one time when the new battery was not recognised as the old one. Restart of all systems cured that)
    IMPORTANT things to remember
    1. ALWAYS check your Return To Home altitude. Not completely sure why, but after the Samsung Tab reboot the setting is back to default (30m) which in most cases is NOT enough. Set that to 60 at least.
    2. Try to calibrate your compass every flight day or if you have travelled a long distance between flights.
    3. On low altitudes ALWAYS have a visual. Wide angle lens is deceiving. You WILL be much lower than it looks on the tab screen.
    4. Do not let the recording run all the time. 32Gb of the memory we have in the drone is not enough for all 3 batteries in 4K. If you need more recording time - reduce the camera resolution - • DJI Phantom 4 | Best C... . My iMovie was struggling with 4K so it might be a good idea anyway.
    5. Camera has NO sound recording capability (not that we need to listen to the props anyway).
Notes and “nice to have” things to improve experience:
    1. Turning (yaw) is very sensitive so if you are going for a cinematic look practise first to get a good feel for it because the control stick is sensitive and you’ll get a lot of jerking in your footage otherwise
    2. Same goes for camera tilting - takes some time to get used to.
    3. READ and WATCH and practise Intelligent flight modes. The most useful are “Point of interest” - • How to use Point of In... and “Course Lock” - • How to use IOC Course ... . Others - not so much. But to practise in the open space - otherwise disorientation and crashes are inevitable.
    4. It is possible to release and catch the drone by hand - watch carefully and practise simple flight modes first though to get a feel for it. Very handy on the water if you are on the boat. • DJI Phantom | Safe Cat...
    5. ND filter for the lenses. As you might have noticed in my video, on an overcast day the camera struggles with the light and overexposes a lot… here is the thing that can compensate for that • DJI Phantom 4 - Using ... and • In Depth: Polar Pro Fi... . They are actually sold by DJI - store.dji.com/p... and store.dji.com/p...
    6. Batteries take a while to charge. After a long day you tend to forget to rotate them on the charger. This may help • Battery Charging Hub f... it does not charge them all at once (those are very bulky chargers) but will charge them consecutively. Sold by DJI here store.dji.com/p...
