  • An absolute gem hidden in the forest - the old Ladner Creek Bridge. Standing strong for over 100 years, this trestle has survived abandonment, weathering and fires. Along the way there is also a collapsed tunnel and other KVR remnants to explore.

As i have walked across and snowshoed across that trestle I see that it has really disintegrated in the last twenty years. Faces of tunnels tend to have different dates as they fixed the tunnel entrances when they had the money .

That bridge was walkable 20 years ago!

Wonderful video. I’ve visited the bridge many times and filmed a skit there on another channel of mine!
One thing I’d like to point out, that photo you’ve got that says (198X) was actually taken in the late 50s. Either 57 or 58, I’ve seen a couple of the videos taken then. The tracks were removed in 1961

Back in the 90's my buddy helped build and maintain that trail over the top of the tunnel. We also used to maintain the concrete sheds on each end of the tunnel clearing out rocks. Back then there were hardly any visitors and the trestle ties were in much better shape. The original tunnel was very short with no concrete sheds. Unfortunately this beauty of an area is not like it used to be at all. Someone lit a fire on the bridge a few years ago as well... sad..

Yep, the trail is a bit 'wild' these days but still a great little hike. I didn't notice any concrete sheds.

@@LifeIsAdventureChannel The concrete sheds I am referring to are the ones with the dates stamped on them. They were not part of the original construction. They were added much later. The original tunnel which starts at the end of the concrete is much shorter but totally collapsed.

Also of note that tunnel was intentionally collapsed so people couldn't access the bridge. I'm guessing for liability reasons.

The 198X photo was from a fan trip in 1957 or 1958

I've always wanted to stop and hike up to this. I saw a photo that confirmed that it's still there after the flooding.

We use to stop and enjoy this walk atop the old railbed to the collapsed tunnel, then up and over to the steel trestle. Be advised that about 3yrs ago they placed chain link fencing across the railbed atop the short trail leading up from where you can pull off the highway and park.
They posted 'NO Trespassing' signs on the chain link fence as well.

Thanks for this. I especially appreciate the brief view of the far (west )side of the bridge, as the railway grade disappears into the trees.

I thought about exploring the other side but I think it is just forest until it bends right away back to the highway.

Around the corner on the West side of the Ladner Creek bridge was another bridge that is no longer there. It was removed sometime after the railway was abandoned. The only way to follow the West side of the railway grade is to access it from Siwash Creek road. The railway crosses that road but you really have to look for it because there is a lot of trees growing on it and it is pretty hard to see, however if you know what to look for you can find it. You more or less have to walk up Siwash road or drive really slow. The only problem is if you locate the rail grade and follow it East, you still can't reach the west side of Ladner creek bridge because of the removed bridge I mentioned above. Also, there really isn't much to see because you're in the forest, so unless you're a real determined individual and like bushwacking, knock yourself out.

@@LowLightMike You're most welcome, Mike. I've explored that area from Hope to Brookmere in the mid 80's early 90's. I've also explored from Merritt to Brookmere, Brookmere to Princeton, Princeton to Penticton, and Penticton to Midway. I've also done the Okanagan spur from Penticton to Osoyoos and a bit of the VV & E trackage around Bridesville.
Back in those days, except for a lot of the Coquihalla Sub and the VV&E, you could drive on the old railway grade. Not so much, anymore. I've always been fascinated with the KVR.
BTW, love your videos on the Port Alberni Sub and the old mainline from Nanaimo to Courtenay. Keep up the good work. Cheers

Thanks @@kelseyhayes8171 . One of my motivations in documenting the Port Alberni Sub is by seeing similarities to other places (such as where you've mentioned) and realizing the importance of documenting the Port Alberni Sub in its present "Still there, but barely hanging on" situation. Cheers !

are you trying to put your kids at extreme risk?I cannot believe that you would put them on a trail that given one false step would be their end

get a grip johnboy. You teach your kids to respect nature and be safe you don't hide then in a bubble. Thats not extreme risk at all.
