Some of our family / solo adventures from across BC, Canada and beyond. Hopefully providing some inspiration to get out there and explore!
Abandoned Hosmer (BC, Rockies)
Hosmer BC is an old mining town that was active in the early 1900s. Abandoned infrastructure can be found at several locations on the edge of forested mountains.
Interesting locations include a power house, cemetery, tipple, coke ovens, and mine portals. The site is quite spread out so exploring requires a lot of walking through the forest.

St Margaret's Deep Shelter (UK)
Переглядів 13621 годину тому
I met a pleasant chap while I was exploring near Dover and he pointed on the map and told me to go there to find something interesting. Of course I had to take up this offer and explore near the cliffs of St. Margarets (near Dover). It was an absolute pleasure to stumble upon a secret entrance to a WWII deep level shelter.
Baker Lookout (BC, Kootenays)
Переглядів 10 тис.21 день тому
Before all the comms equipment was installed on Mt. Baker (Cranbrook, BC), there was only one structure on top of the mountain. It was one of BC's many fire lookout towers. Nowadays the tower is abandoned and even deemed unsafe. It was worth strapping skis on to check it out in the middle of winter.
Exploring abandoned Citadel (UK)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.28 днів тому
The Citadel and surrounding Western Heights were a series of defenses constructed throughout the 1800s to protect the key port of Dover from an invasion across the channel by Napoleonic France. Nowadays, much of the area is abandoned or part of a local nature reserve. The keen eye will notice suspicious footpaths leading into the bushes. Following these can lead to all sorts of interesting mili...
Green Mountain Splitboard (BC, Okanagan)
Переглядів 344Місяць тому
Green Mountain is an insignificant mountain near Penticton, BC, not far from the Apex Mountain Resort. A journey to the summit is nothing to write home about but it was a good opportunity to gear-test before the upcoming ski season.
Abandoned Forts along the Thames (UK)
Переглядів 693Місяць тому
There are a number of interesting abandoned military sites east of London on the south bank of the Thames. A couple forts were built in the mid-1850s and expanded during the world wars. There is also a land to sea torpedo station as well as some explosive factories. All this made for a nice exploratory trail run out of Gravesend.
Barber Mountain on the US-Canada Border (Okanagan)
Переглядів 212Місяць тому
Barber Mountain itself is unremarkable except for the fact that it's 'summit' is almost exactly on the US-Canada border. This made it worth a quick visit. Monument # 111 greets the mountain conqueror at the top.
Grand Shaft (UK)
Переглядів 143Місяць тому
There are countless interesting sites in the Western Heights near Dover, UK. Many of these date back to the days of Napoleon (mid-1850s) when tensions between England and France were at a climax. The abandoned Grand Shaft is one of the highlights. A triple-spiral staircase that allowed for troops to quickly descend the steep cliffs of Dover in order to meet an oncoming attack.
Grain Tower (UK)
Переглядів 4962 місяці тому
A strange structure lies off the coast of Kent (UK) near the Isle of Grain. At low tide it is possible to walk out in the mud and explore the ruins. This Grain Tower is actually an old military structure - a gun tower from the mid-1800s. At a time when relations between England and France were tense, an attack across the channel was a real danger. Defense structures like this were built to guar...
High Rim Trail (59km) in a day (BC, Okanagan)
Переглядів 4,1 тис.2 місяці тому
The High Rim Trail stretches 59km from Kelowna to Vernon passing over the hills through Lake Country, BC. It seemed like a good challenge to run the entire trail in one day and return via public transportation.
Tuktakamin Fire Lookout Tower (BC, Okanagan)
Переглядів 6592 місяці тому
Tuktakamin Mountain, near Falkland BC, is seldom visited for its hiking potential because there is a decent road all the way to the top and the top itself is full of comms towers. Before all the comms equipment existed, the summit was home to a BC fire lookout tower. The remnants of the tower can still be found at the top and a rough 6km hiking loop can be followed to visit all the important sp...
Bonaparte Mountain (Washington)
Переглядів 1232 місяці тому
Mt Bonaparte Mountain is best known for two features. The first is that it has an actively managed fire lookout tower (dating back to 1914!) The second is that it has over 1000m of prominenc and boasts the highest elevations in the Okonogan Highlands. We hopped over the border from BC to check out these features and also the striking late-season larches.
Mt Wapiti (BC, Rocky Mountains)
Переглядів 1893 місяці тому
Mt Wapiti is Elkford, BC's signature mountain. The trail starts at the top of the ski hill. I came up here once in winter and considered heading up the mountain but it gets awfully steep. Turning back to return in the fall was a smart move as the hike is officially supposed to take 3-5 hours on a good day. One grueling section to push through is the 'avalanche chute' - unending uphill battle. E...
Tahaetkun Mountain (BC, Okanagan)
Переглядів 2563 місяці тому
We hiked the seldom-visited Tahaetkun Mountain in the hills behind Fintry Canyon in the BC Okanagan. The drive in on forestry roads may well have been longer than the hike itself but that's the price of adventuring out into an unknown area. The summit is marked by a familiar green rocketship.
Charleston Peak Aircraft Wreckage (Nevada)
Переглядів 1353 місяці тому
Charleston Peak is the highest summit near Las Vegas and it just so happens to be the site of a mysterious 1955 military airplane crash site. The full hike to the summit is 30km / 1500m elevation gain and the crash site is near the top. The story of the crash, the nature of the mission, and the aftermath are incredibly interesting and full of controversy and legend.

Oyama and Streak Lakes exploring (BC, Okanagan)
My Dad lived in Hosmer as a child (1920’s) later the family moved to Fernie where he grew up with 10 brothers and sisters, and went to school. His Mom and Dad and oldest brother originally moved from Italy, sailing to Ellis Island and eventually finding their way to the Fernie/ Hosmer area. My Dad’s oldest brother worked with the mine horses somewhere around the area. Thanks for the great video!
Fantastic closing shot
2:33 🤔 Coal fired plant? It would seem reasonable to believe those may have been for removing ash. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there was an ash dump not too far away. Are there any small hills that seem somehow unnatural / not quite right & out of place?
Good point. I'll have a search around when the snow isn't covering everything!
@LifeIsAdventureChannel Depending how long the place was in operation it could be significant. There is a pile in a town near me that resembles one of those Mayan or Incan ziggurats!
Yup and some liberal JA burnt it down just like most back country gems in bc? Can’t have nothing nice.
We use to mountain bike up Baker back in the 90's. Loads of trails up behind the college. Lots of fun 4x4ing up Baker too. Awesome that you were up there recently. Thanks.
Sad to see all the graffiti
I was thinking that those kilns would make a very nice bear condo. That old cemetery was neat and to explore after the snow melt.
Yeah, best to take a good look inside before crawling into one of those things! Too cozy.
@@surfingmoose yup. We thought the same 😁
The ruins there are pretty cool! The work that must have gone into building those kilns and then they just get abandoned. I'm glad they're still there to explore!
We used to walk around exploring all those areas as kids including Fernie, Coal Creek & throughout the Elk Valley. It was a wonderful place to grow up.
Any tips on other interesting places to explore around the Elk Valley?
@ you could see the Ammonite Fossil but it’s not much of a challenging hike. Chain Lakes is a wonderful experience during hot summer days. The China Wall was a very cool natural mountain feature I always enjoyed to see while in the Flathead area. Just ask anyone about these places and you’ll sure to get directions.
Cool. 👍👍
Cool, thanks for trudging in the snow for us🎉
Good you find the way out again. Seems easy to get lost in there. You deserve a bigger following
I spent many hunting seasons up and on Wallace Mountain. The old cabin you poked into was used and maintained by local Boy Scouts. Had a fine Scout shield on the front door, and inside, a cook stove and bunks and screened cupboards . Very well kept, inside and out. Many memories. Thank you for the views. Robt. Adamson and the Greene brothers, Mike, Neil and Karey.
So interesting to hear about some history on that cabin. Thanks!
Excellent job and interesting subject!
Greetings from the Philippines Funny, I lived in Cranbrook for almost 20 years and drove my quad all over the place but I have never seen that side of Mt. baker.
One for the adventure list on your next visit!
@ nope, I’m not going back🙂
That really cool to be able to explore these leftover places from way back then!
Great video thank you 👍were you bleeding a bit there ?
I pulled back a tree branch and then it spung back straight into my face. Had prouder moments...
@LifeIsAdventureChannel - Wondered maybe a little grind to save the camera over your own skin LOL !
Nothing ventured, nothing gained….pretty cool to find this. 👍👍
what time of year was this?
It was the beginning of February 2024 but there was hardly any snow that winter!
@@LifeIsAdventureChannel Yeah last season was a dry one for sure! Hopefully it shapes up better than last year.
My wife and I drove up there in 2023 summer, I had fun at the wheel of our RAV 4, her in the passenger seat not so much. Took loads of photos and what a view! I'm too old now to hike it, probably a two dayer for me if I was to walk up the service "road" which is just a wide trail, it was great fun and we are both glad we've been there.
Man you are a machine. Good on you.
Great stuff. Tocher ridge is on my tick list for Yoho. Neat to see it is still possible to get there. There's also an even older fire lookout in the same valley called Mt. King Fire Lookout. It splits off to the left 1.2km up the valley and goes up the opposite side early on. Can't find anyone going to that since about 1970.
I didn't know about King. Thanks by the way - I love hearing tidbits like this! The list grows ever longer.
@@LifeIsAdventureChannel I've seen Mt. King on a 1961 map, and the 6th Edition of the Canadian Rockies Trail Guide shows it splitting off 1.2km up the valley.
ow safe is that with the microwave receivers right there? some concentrated signals so close.
Such an adventure 🥰❄️
I've ridden my motorcycle up this mountain many times long ago.
That is such a shame to see it in that condition. My dad used to man that lookout and it wasn't that long ago. I'm glad I got to see it when it was still functioning and in good shape.
lol no doubt its deemed an unsafe structure due to those microwave backhauls being so close. anyone in that structure would be exposing themselves to microwaves that exceed the saturation density limits, breaking the law.
So, turning it into an off grid cabin isn’t a good idea?! Darn it. 😮
I’m sorry you fell and hurt yourself. You made out better than me. On my first ski trip, to a shabby “ski resort” in the East, I shoveled my ski under a clump of ice, my right ski twisted and I got a boot line fracture of both bone. My leg twisted like a wet towel when the ski didn’t release. Ouch! The break was life threatening so the damage to my left knee went completely unnoticed for weeks. It’s been almost 30 years and I have lingering issues but I wouldn’t trade the experience of snow skiing for anything. I was told never to ski again by multiple orthopedic surgeons because my bones are too small, too fragile, don’t heal normally and the old break, ligament and tendon damage put me at higher risk. After a couple of years, I decided to go to a “real” ski resort in Colorado, took lessons from a professional ski instructor and then spent a glorious week skiing. I retired from it content to follow the doctors’ advice! 😊 Thanks for an interesting video!
Happy to hear you got that glorious week!
Was up there this summer, 2024. Really cool place! My old 4x4 made it up there lol.
It looks like a gnarly access road - nice work!
@LifeIsAdventureChannel it can be lol
Wow incredible! How far down do you think the drop is in the cave? It was hard to tell from the video. Do you think it's over 10m?
No, I think it's only a couple meters. Would be pretty straightforward to continue for someone who knew what they were doing.
@@LifeIsAdventureChannel awesome thanks for replying. I'm an ice climber and I'm scheming heading up that way with skis and my ice gear. From photos it looks like the headwall you have to climb up by on the way to the hut has some ice lines on it too. Thought the cave would be neat to play in too.
Sounds like a great trip. Agreed, the headwall would be a great place too (and it's just below the hut!)
Quite an adventure! I really hope this will be taken care of and fixed up. These places are a neat part of our history. We went to Goat Peak Fire Lookout outside of Beaverdell this fall. Was well maintained. Keep up the great work!
Goat Peak is such a gem!
Oh, so that's why your "skis" looked so weird. Anyway cool trip. Thanks for bringing us along.
split board
Hopefully a local club will adopt and look after that one. Thanks again for another great video!
I was up working on one of my comms sites this summer. It's a great view. Wanted to go up the tower but was deterred by the "no entry" signs.
Nice trip again thanks
Your doing great thanks for taking us along!
It looked pretty awesome up there! It would be nice if they're able to fix that lookout up and keep it around for many more years for people to visit.
paddleboards is a fad
Cool visit. What was crawling around that branch at 0:40 ? Top left sort of….
I think it's a leaf dangling from a spider web. If not, I don't want to know!
@ I dunno we looked a few times, seems like it curling around the branch…. Hmmm
👍
What was the air like in those tunnels? Was it musty or anything? Looks like you could get lost in there! That's really cool exploration and I'm glad it' still there to be explored.
👍
Air seemed pretty good. It's always a worry for sure. Locals explore it often enough so that gave me some courage.
@@LifeIsAdventureChannel that's good that the air was good. I guess it had enough openings to move around a bit then.
Hey! I'm a long tine westbank'r and just found your channel... I've been all around that area and havent stumbled on this one. Do you mind sharing which ridge/hill/vicinity that cabin is? Looks like it's above the K9 trails, but maybe you down lower when hunting for the cabin? Would love to have another destination to check out! Also, if you want a few more details or other destinations/explorations in the Pennask area, i could maybe give you a couple of options :) looks like you went up the downhill area, but theres a separate route up. Thanks for posting your stuf! Ive started a list to do with our littles in 2025!
I love how you just wanted the 'in the vicinity of '. I'm the same way - give me hint but don't ruin the adventure! For the cabin, we parked where Jack Pine FSR branches off Glenrosa Rd (also a great spot for sledding and pallet burning). Head out on nearby trails leading away from Telemark (east). The cabin is within 500m of that parking spot (as the crow flies). Not quite at a high point and a short bushwhack off the main trails. I would assume the main trails to be packed down by snowshoes. I would be thrilled to hear about some adventure ideas in the Pennask area. I also have a list but every time I check something off it grows instead of shrinking. We'll have to swap lists sometime.
@LifeIsAdventureChannel hmmm I'm not quite following you, definitely know where jackpine is, but not sure of you went back around the big swamp or not..either way... I searched out your Insta and I'll message you over there so that we do do pictures haha ill do that in a bit today and will send you some stuff too
You got it - around back behind the big swamp.
Testing on Green Mountain was a wild choice. i've hiked it multiple times and never once came across snow in june while i have up on apex
Yeah probably a bad idea. Apex actually looked pretty wintery across the valley 😆
@@LifeIsAdventureChannel Even when apex has a base of 200+ cm you can see grass on top of green mountain LOL
Looks like a good test of the split board🏂
Apex❄️…windy and cold ? surely you jest.😂🤣🤙
This is very nostalgic. I grew up on west side road and this was before my house burnt, and when everything was nice. It's kinda sad tbh.
I'm surprised to see all the rebuilding this year. The west side is definitely the more wild side.
@ Yeah I’m staying on the wild side this year while my house gets rebuilt.
Great info.
That's really cool! I like that you had the history of the places to tell us while you were there😁😁
Is it possible to access in the middle of February?
Yes but it increases the length of the walk. It is quite popular all year round so I guarantee there will be hard-packed snow trails.
Thank you so much for documenting the history and course of the Grey Canal so thoroughly and visually. Have moved up to the North Okanagan in 1968 and although aware of the canal and have been on sections I had no idea of it's scope. Thank you for taking me along for an incredible tour that has been long overdue. Well done sir and thank you once again!
I hear a new part of it was redeveloped into a walking trail recently. Will have to visit again soon.
we used to float down the concrete sections with out a tube as the bottom was always a bit slimy and slippery.. but we did wear out a few pairs of shorts doing that .
You're kidding! That's a riot!
