Forgive my rambling, I had to write something.
I bought his album 1990 on a whim, not knowing what to expect. When that song played, I just felt so much better about myself. There's something real yet raw there, unlike most of the "feel good" songs you can hear.

I think one thing that's so lovable about Daniel is that he's showing this pure concept: that you can be broken and imperfect but still bring your gifts and real feelings to the world unafraid and it's beautiful. It's something we can all connect with, and seeing him be imperfect but unashamed and giving it 100% is something that hits deep.
In this age where people only share the side of them that's perfect, and wanting to hide what actually makes us unique, this guy's a saint.

I asked him to bring his guitar with him. He showed up wearing just blue jeans and a white T-shirt The portrait came out beautiful. Sorry to see hi. Leave. My gal and I went to see him in Toronto. I went to see him play last year and let me tell you, when he was playing, almost everybody had their faces soaked in tears. What i´m trying to say is that sometimes a great song don´t have to be much complex and sometimes it does (I mean, I love jazz, personally dave brubeck quartet). But as for Dan´s style I really feel his lyrics, his ways of playing the piano in "Held the Hand" for example. He is, without a doubt, one of my favourite composers, not by what he composes muscially, but for the way he makes me feel when he plays it. He puts all of himself in every song and that´s not something "...probably 1 million bed room musicians that are as good as this" can do

They're crying because they feel sorry for him. His 5th grade lyrics, terrible guitar playing, it's all incredibly sad. I guess it's better than Daniel collecting SSI and working at Wal-Mart.

I used to live in Louisville, Kentucky. Daniel Johnston was in town for a performance at an outsider art festival. My neighbors apartment caught on fire due to old worn out electrical wiring and my apartment almost burned up before the firefighters put out the fire. I didn't go to the art festival or show, but as I was standing in the cold watching the firefighters cutting holes in the roof, Daniel Johnston walked by very quickly and nervously wearing a Daniel Johnston t-shirt, on the sidewalk that was crowded with people watching the fire. It was a very surreal experience. If anyone is familiar with Lousiville, my apartment was upstairs from De La Torre's and La Bodega.

I know people mean well but you're absolutely right. No one wants to be defined by their mental illness. It's already likely to happen on its own to a lot of people without the help of the people around them. There's a middle ground between pretending someone's mental illness doesn't exist and defining them by it entirely. We can acknowledge someone's struggles and sympathize without defining them as troubled or broken or lost or whatever misguided euphemisms we use.

It saddens me because you can see his left hand shaking of a medication he took called Loxapine , a heavy antipsychotic , which He hated and said it made him want to escape his body. It made him thirsty all the time that I’d watch him drink up to 30 diet mountain dews in less than an evening. He was such a sweetheart. I tries a loxapine once and it was like living in nightmare and the only way I can describe it is like being buried alive. A terrible medication. I remember coming across his music for the first time several years ago. I remember hearing how stilted and weird it was.. I didn’t know what to make of it. but I was interested. Just recently I saw the movie The Devil and Daniel Johnston and it all made sense to me. I was like “I get it now!” As a musician and illustrator who’s hit a brick wall, Daniel has inspired me to create, and create, and create.

how can you not LOVE daniel? hes proud, unafraid. Most of you are so scared to be so against the crowd you can only latch on when its safe.. not that that is the point of all this, but it seems the nay sayers point it out
