I read How Long Til Black Future Month first. I admit, I was entranced by the cover art, read the book and fell in love with her work. Thank you Willow, for promoting her work.
Try to start on a day before serious free time. At least the Broken Earth / Fifth Season trilogy is really, really hard to put down. I lost so much sleep rushing through it the first time. Will definitely reread it next time I can afford all-nighters.
The City We Became duology was my first time reading N.K. Jemisin and I was absolutely blown away!! You’ve convinced me to read the Broken Earth trilogy next
Sometimes it's not just about the quality of the books, it's about when they come into your life. I had to be in the hospital three times last year, and only one of those times was planned (C-section recovery after my son was born) - the others were returning to the hospital when he was 5 days old because my blood pressure shot up, and then a few months later I had pneumonia. I haven't read her other stuff, but the "Great Cities" duology was part of my comfort reading for all of those times.
What a great, inspiring and passionate presentation of an interesting author. I have never read N. K. Jemisin... I already had The Broken Earth trilogy on my TBR list, but I now added both City We Became and Killing Moon. Thanks!
She is amazing. I read Hundred Thousand Kingdoms pretty soon after it was released and that was good enough that I stuck her name into my brain. But for some reason I never did read the sequels to 100 000 Kingdoms. But I literally yesterday finished the Broken Earth trilogy and it's even better than the 100 000 Kingdoms. Literally some of the best fantasy I've ever read. I should probably go back to her first trilogy now and read books 2-3.
Omg speaking of comics. You NEED to read the Monstress graphic novel. Its so insanely good and insanely beautiful. Im relearning blender so I can make an Jalex style 3d animated trailer for Monstress in the style of Arcane (the art style goes perfectly with Monstress). The story follows an amputee girl Maika Halfwolf who is an Arcanic (have human/half Ancient) who grew up in refugee camps as a child after her mother experimented on her and died. The 1800s asian inspired continent has been at war for a while now and its not going well. The human witches of the Cumaea harvest Arcanic limbs to feed their magic. Maika is investigating what happened to her mother and what her mom did to her. Because there quite literally an eldritch monster living inside her than manifests from the stump of her arm and devours people. Theres also this little fox arcanic girl named Kippa who i would literally die for. The 5 races are Arcanics, Humans, Ancients, cat Nekomancers (fun wordplay I'm sure you understand give your Japanese penchant), and Old Ones (these giant floating eldritch abominations who are seeeemingly mindlessly wandering and they ignore humans. And Maika's monster looks a lot like one. Theres this ancient figure called the Shaman Empress who did something sus thoussnds of years ago and its reverberating through time. Its such a great story. Please read it. Its in full color and its stunning. All the clothes are incredible.
I'm currently on the Broken Sky, and the series is so good, with recent events it's become my favorite book series, so much so my manager ask me about it innocently and I locked him into a 10 minute rant about how amazing it is
She's incredible. Nobody like her. I highly recommend her Dreamblood Duology too! Dreamblood is really good though her writing hadn't peaked yet. But it's such a cool story. Its a BLACK black story and queer too. The magic is Narcomancy. Dream magic. There's basically a resource called Dreamblood that is produced during sleep. The story follows 2 Gatherers, magic priest/lawmen who act as Euthanasiacists and sometimes Executioners and harvest the dream humors from those in sleep near death. Theyre like sandman reapers in a sense. There are also Sharers who use tithed dream humors to heal people. In this story, something has gone very wrong and there's a monster stalking the dreams of the cityfolks, and committing ghastly magical murders. And it leads to a conspiracy that reveals a rot at the core of this society's power structures and religion. Ive read all her books. Her Inheritance trilogy is also worth reading but def the worst of her book in my opinion. Book 1 is great but I remember not loving the 2 companion books that much, though it was like 15yrs ago lol.
Thank you so much for this recommendation, I am always on the lookout for new exciting Authors and N K Jemisin sounds spot on. The books are all on sale on Kobo so I managed to nab the lot for 7 quid which is a steal, so that's my reading sorted for a few days :)
THANK YOU for that Kobo tip! The only e-books I have seriously missed after I stopped using my Amazon account were the Broken Earth trilogy, and now I have them on Kobo. (I know the Walton's aren't much better than Bezos, but at least I don't have to see them on the news all the time)
@ronjaj.addams-ramstedt1023 you're very welcome :) hehe I know, I would love physical copies but we have no room for more books so everything is digital. I tried to dig them out of Libby and Borrowbox but they only had the foreign language versions strangely, and my German isnt strong enough for it to make sense.
My partner is a huge green lantern fan - I brought up this series and he had heard of it but never seen it. I think I'll get it for him and see if he likes it 😊
to my fellow commenters: i CANNOT recommend enough, if you enjoy short story (even one iota), to read her short story collection, How Long Til Black Future Month :)
I've heard the title Fifth Season so many times but never got around to research it. Welp, my tbr was already enormous, what difference will three more books make lol
I missed “best translated books from certain country” series. Maybe start with German, Russian, or Spanish novels. You are the best in reviewing translated books.
Thank you for the compliment and I'm sorry you miss my other videos, but I did explain everything in a recent video. This is what I want to do right now.
I've read one thing by Jemisin. It was fine, and I might read more. The only problem is I think I'd have a hard time getting into it, simply because I don't think I could respect the work of a writer who criticises a story without ever having read it. If that's how an author engages with the writing of others, how can I take their art seriously? From a purely personal taste perspective, that Fifth Season opening had very "jaded teen profundity" vibes. If anyone can vouch for it getting better, I'd love to hear.
The only NK Jemisin I've read is The Killing Moon. I found it fine, but a little disappointing after all the hype around her. I do want to read The Fifth Season, though, especially because a friend who loves it bought me a copy a little while ago. Your description of it also makes me think I should get to it sooner rather than later!
Is she pivotal in opening the door for diversity in science fiction and fantasy? I'd like to see that given fuller treatment. Regardless, she's great. And there are so many wonderful books being written in recent years. In the '80s I lost interest in those genres because it seemed the same old stuff was coming out year after year. The last couple decades the richness of the genres has been growing…I want to say exponentially, but that might be hyperbolic.
that was the funniest ad
I've ever seen, sponsors
are lucky to have you. 🍀
Does your sweater has their own fan club? they deserve it :_ )

I've only read the dreamblood duology and it's SO underrated!! It was an incredible read and i can't wait to read more from her.
That is literally the only thing by her that I haven't read yet! I must get on that!
I have not read any of her works yet. I feel it is a blind spot in my reading that should be definitely corrected 🙂

@@ronjaj.addams-ramstedt1023 thank you for the advice :) will allocate some time!
For the record, I bought that Lampington stuff whole hog. No clue it was a ad.
Making me laugh, lady. Good stuff.
humm- willows arch nemesis is very cute!!! 😁
I am gonna read The City We Became and its sequel sometime this year, and then reread Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.
The City We Became duology was my first time reading N.K. Jemisin and I was absolutely blown away!! You’ve convinced me to read the Broken Earth trilogy next
I just asked for The Broken Earth trilogy for my birthday present. And I'm very excited that I did now ☺

OMG Lapmington Jones, now i'm gonna be waiting for new adds to come.
Glad you liked NK Jemisin books.
first class sponsorship add. Great video.
"The Broken Earth" trilogy and her short story collection "How Long 'til Black Future Month" are my favorites.
she's amazing indeed! i love her work!🎉

A very serious ad for a serious light

This is not Janny Wurts
Correct! You get five hundred thousand points for all your correctness! Don't spend them all at once; they're worthless!
