I’m glad you are moving on from that allotment, it was too much work, too remote and a distraction from the path of destiny, so good riddance.
I resisted “suggesting “ anything more about it, it was a rubbish heap with few rewards.
I’m genuinely relieved that you are moving on from it.
      Cheers

You do whatever you think is best for yourself. It’s your life and dreams not anyone else. Just because you share part of your life on UA-cam doesn’t mean you are accountable to anyone but yourself. If giving up the allotment and getting a piece of land that is more convenient for you then go for it.

Another great video Sean but I do worry sometimes that you are overthinking things stop worrying about what other people say and do what you want to do. I think you made the right decision to give up the Allotment as it looks very hard work for one person, if the piece of land that you’re hoping to get falls through, why don’t you just get yourself some containers and grow your own veg in your back garden I had an Allotment and had to give it up, but I’ve never got a load of containers, potatoes and buckets and I can grow as much as I want to eat and life a lot easier

Sad to hear about you giving up your allotment, but it is your decision. It needs alot of work doing on it.Your health is more important why make yourself ill doing it. Your idea of renting or buying some land in the near future I think is a good idea. Would it be possible to put your shed for storage. In your back garden at the side of the house.just past your kitchen window. Do you use your back gate.leant against that ,cover with tarpaulin. Loved the music you showing the waterfall. Had to laugh at the word Celtic in Welsh meaning Sausage. 😂 Hope you are feeling better, now the sun has his hat on. 😊

Totally agree, sometimes in life a dream turns out to be just that. Old saying be careful what you wish for. I have a big sized garden bought it 22 years ago.always been a hard work with weeds brambles nettles etc.as you get older you think is it worth it sadly. In 53 old fella 64.saying that I'm growing, or trying to grow loads of veg this year.

It's hard to accept one's limitations as one gets older, so well done you. Life is for living & enjoying, not for slogging away for the sake of it. I am now 77 & it hasn't been easy to accept changes in my lifestyle

    • @darlenebradley6756
      @darlenebradley6756 Місяць тому +6

But, Marion, you are accepting the changes and that is what's important! Words of wisdom! Resist obsessing what you've lost, or can't do, but focus on all that you currently are and have! I will be 70 next year, and - as a registered nurse - a lot of my job as an orthopaedic nurse is helping people to do just that: accepting life as it is in the here and now. See your glass as half full, not half empty! God bless you!

Oh Sean you have made such a wise decision to not take on that allotment, you would been absolutely exhausted by the time you had cleared all that rubbish away, I have to admit my heart sank each time I saw it. Life is short, getting a small plot you can enjoy is a much better idea, you will look forward to going there and it will be so enjoyable instead of cleaning up someone else’s mess, I think you are making a wonderful garden at home it gets more and more lovely each week. You have lots to look forward to! ❤🇦🇺 Carol

I know the feeling of thinking I need to keep up to show everyone that I still have value. I would probably not have a garden this year, just because I feel like not having one, but then they (family and others) will start with the old woman can’t keep up. I am 74 and would like to do other things now and yes I have other things I would like to do. Now I am hearing things from them like, we will never let you go to a nursing home, mom. I don’t know where they get that idea. Is it because I want to change my routines ? I don’t need to make big gardens or cook lots of food. I have other things I want to do now. Some solitude and peace would be wonderful. Does anyone else feel that way?

      @Angel-002 Місяць тому +5

I hear you. I had a "friend" that stopped talking to me when lockdowns were lifted because a family member told her I don't go out anywhere or do anything!! I live on my own & have got used to my own company over the years as I had to. That's not to say I don't go out with friends occasionally. However, lockdown hit others, like my family & friends, & they couldn't cope. They then saw I hardly go out & decided I was the one not coping & started making all sorts up about me! My niece had arranged for me to join different coffee afternoons & "clubs", but at least she actually listened to me. When I explained I do go out, but can only meet friends when they are actually free as they have families & children/grandchildren & I cannot demand they see me every week, she understood. I told her the only thing covid did for me was highlight how little I do go out socialising & how much time I spend on my own, but after all the years doing so, I'm ok with it, but everyone else isn't. The daft thing is, when I was first on my own many years ago, I rang my sister & brother & told them how lonely I was. They didn't understand & nothing changed & I realised I had to adjust, which is what I did. Funny how after years & after covid they were the ones not comfortable with my life🤷‍♀️🤣🤣 Even funnier when it was actually my sister that would only go shopping & wouldn't go out anywhere, even when my niece (her daughter) & I would go for lunch or evening meal, she wouldn't come with us, but I was the one with the problem....work that one out😂😂 Funny how none of them offered to go out with me or invite me round to their house for a chat or dinner too🤷‍♀️😂😂 I'm still doing what I want, when I want, but my sister couldn't cope with that either & stopped talking to me! She's 12 yrs older than me & always tried to tell me what to do, I guess she couldn't cope with me having my own mind🤪😂 You do what you want to do for as long as you can. It reminds me of the film Mrs Caldicots Cabbage War 😂😂😂😂

@@Angel-002 I have always been a bit of an introvert but because of Covid and my husband who has heart issues and diabetes I felt I could not take chances. We have ALL our vaccinations and I have kids who still tried to keep us from getting vaccinated. I worked in Nursing for over 30 years I actually know what I am doing. I think I am happier when they just leave me alone. I love them very much but I also know them very well and they need to attend to their own issues. Sorry didn’t mean to sound rude or mean. I like having time for me and so does my husband. They just need to direct their own lives not ours. Have a great day.

Sean I’ve been watching UA-cam since it first came to be and I even once had a channel for 6 years of my own so please hear me when I say .. pay no mind to the people who knit pick things like your music in your videos or anything else. Your channel is very unique and the way it is now is why so many people follow you and enjoy it. Don’t try to be like everyone else because we have so many people who are the same nowa days and there is only one of you and that in of itself is very hard to come by nowa days and very unique. I look forward to the days when you upload and I even find myself rewatching your videos when I’m relaxing .. it feels like I’m watching a old tv show from back in the day but modern and genuine and I love it. So please don’t change and try your best to ignore those people who like to complain. It gets you nowhere and you will never please everyone so stick to what you know and what you want to do. We are here to watch and follow along with you and what you come up.

Well done Sean, you've had time to reflect after a hectic few months, and decided to do what's best for yourself. I am one of those annoying 70+ year olds whose energy levels are still far too high. I used to have an allotment and gave it up to rent private land, I seemed to be surrounded by wannabe allotment gardeners who only grew dandelions, rosebay willow herb, thistles and nettles. these seeded and loved my clear soil. Since moving to Wales I am trying to be content with a small garden. I am growing vertically to make the most of my space. There are no allotments close by so I am able to avoid temptation. Enjoy your own space and move onwards at a pace that suits you, I hope that the land that you viewed is workable.

Dear Sean, It saddens me to hear you mention about some of the comments regarding your feeling old. No two people are alike and comparing one body to another is failing to understand this fact. I mentioned before in a comment on my having Fibromyalgia. I have had it since I was 30 and am now 67. For the first 3 months I couldn’t walk. Little by little, baby step by baby step for the next year I gradually was walking normal again. Each day I added a few minutes to what was a very short walk until in time became longer and longer walks. Now I am on average walking about 3 miles a day to keep for the most part my Fibromyalgia ay bay. There are still though times when I hit a wall and am down for a while. Folks who don’t live with chronic autoimmune issues are unaware of the challenge of strength it entails to manage. I believe in you, support you and respect how you feel.

I couldn't walk, had been housebound for 4 years, needed constant support, even my food cutting up. So I took the plunge to go carnivore. Within weeks I was mobile, I'm now backtpplaying musical instruments, my auto immune (inflammatory) conditions including T2 diabetes gone. I hope you find your own way out. Being 64 and remembering how difficult things became at about fifty I understand what you are experiencing and it is totally normal. Giving up the allotment is a wise choice. That specific site is going to take a lot of physical work that will tax even a young whippersnapper. Focusing on the area out back of your place should keep you busy. If we overwhelm ourselves as we age I found that I accomplish less. I still have a garden about the size of your allotment. It is right out back of my house with privacy so I can go out in my comfy house clothes or pjs and give the garden anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours depending on the weather. As a young one I was a busy bee, going from dawn to dusk and aging was a hard reality for me to come to terms with, Once I did I gave up expecting so much of myself. taking naps when needed and getting done what I could and am doing so much better physically and mentally. If you decide on the land maybe putting out a call for some volunteers that may not be able to afford an allotment or such can help you with accomplishing what you would like to and you can share in the bounty.

I had a little house just like yours in Devon Sean. Back yard with a wall right outside kitchen window. You would be amazed what a difference just a coat of white paint would make to the that area and to the light indoors.

    Hello Sean
I understand (English is not my language) that you made the decision to abandon the garden that you were clearing. There was really a lot to evacuate (earth, various waste, etc.) and that, honestly, seemed like very, very hard work.
I live alone like you and I also have a vegetable garden. To get there (it's a mountain climb, it goes up a lot) it takes me a good half hour), I work there a lot (Friday I worked there 5/6 hours) and yes at a certain age it's It's tiring and I don't see myself abandoning my land which is my whole life for the moment.
At your house you already have a pretty little piece of land that is becoming more beautiful from video to video and it is already a pleasure to be able to take care of it at your doorstep. I'm sure that in a place or two you could also add a little bit of vegetables.
I also really like walking with you in the countryside, near mining slag heaps, nature
Take care of yourself Sean and have a nice rest of the day

I love gardening and have done so for many years, But when I saw that allotment and the slope and ALL that rubbish, it was so depressing and I didn’t envy you all that work! I felt for you. Enjoy your life, flat land is what you definitely need…..we all do….

Glad you're feeling better. I would give that allotment up too. I'm 50 and that looks like a lot of hard work. Hope the new plot of land takes off it looks perfect. Regarding the shed, we used ours to house the chickens as it meant no bending down when cleaning. Perches and nest boxes were waist height and it was brilliant. Also regarding your music it's just like a cup of tea, beautiful!

I'm from the States, and I've noticed screens don't seem to be common on your side of the pond. My son is moving to Austria and getting married. They're putting screens on the doors and windows. We have screens on all door's, if we keep them open, and all windows. I can't stand bugs in the house. Outside, I protect them. I think you're smart to save and buy so as to have a garden with your home. Always consider your needs first and go from there. BTW, one of the things I enjoy is your music. Please don't change it. Maybe it's because I'm going on 65. LOL. My son's are like you, self employed and find it hard to take a break, as well as both my daughter-in-laws. Your content is wonderful and so very unique to you. Be true to you. My family has found success doing that. Blessings to you.

When you were talking about feeling old and the allotment, I thought this was going to be sad 😞
But it’s not. The real possibility of you having bees, chickens and growing things near home is so much more exciting than the allotment!
You don’t have to take on the first bit of land on offer just because you want to have access to some land.

I think at whatever age we currently are, anyone younger always seems like a spring chicken! 🐔 So don't mind those of us who look back wistfully at being 50! 😀
I LOVE that you don't put background music behind you chatting. So many do. I don;t know why. Your music as it is, is great I think.

For a lot of my pots, especially young plants, I just put some kitchen towel in the base. It holds its structure for long enough that the root ball has formed before it breaks down and you don't have the soil falling out. Crocks are probably better for pots likely to hold their plants for a long time.

Hello Sean From Edmonton, Canada. I am very happy about your wise decision to give up the allotment. The amount of work that would have had to go into it would be daunting even to a young person. Also, I always thought it a bit of a cheek to charge you rent AND expect you to clean up the huge amount of rubbish left by previous renters. Add in the slope issue and you would have been exhausted and sore for a long time before you got it into any kind of reasonable shape. It's always a sensible thing to realize our limitations and at 81 I know, however difficult that is, in the long run it pays off to make these decisions to enable us to live happily as we age. You are obviously so much younger than I but you are starting to have some health issues. I'll pray you find an appropriate and beautiful piece of land to call your own. God Bless. Fondly, Dorothy. P.S....... I love your choice of music accompanying your videos.

I live in a big desert city in the U.S. and it was so relaxing and pleasant to see your waterfalls and stream, and listen to this music. We aren't allowed to have grass or gardens in the neighborhood where I live (on private water company) as it causes water shortages in summer. Your vertical garden in your backyard inspires me to do some container gardening, though javelinas may eat my vegetation. Right now, in my county, we are battling a noxious weed called stinknet weed that smells like turpentine. I've been hoeing and raking it up for weeks. It looks like chamomile, however, it is not edible. I'm older and it would be so nice to have a terraced back yard like yours for gardening without a lot of stooping over. Your flowers are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your life experiences. I look forward to your adventures in Wales.

Hi Sean. I think that physical and mental wellbeing are the most important things especially when living alone. It's about achieving a comfortable balance with life.. Just now the allotment was probably overreach and your garden at home is shaping up just fine. Home is where the heart is and when you're happy there you can journey out to new adventures but also be very happy to get back home (and have a nice cup of tea ;-) ) Two tips from somebody who isn't a gardener.....plant two large pots, one with spring onions to use firstly as chives when you thin them out, and a second with leeks which you can tease out later and pop into holes either in your flower beds asi did or into a future plot. My neighbours needless to say think my garden is a bit eccentric ;-) Oh, and Lidl sell small seed packets at £1 for 4. Just potted some more leeks and courgettes myself for this year. Bargain!

Sean I think your decision is wise. After a stroke, heart surgery and 5months in coronary care I've spent nearly two years slowly learning to walk again use a wheelchair and get my head round the changes in my body and brain that nearly took my life. I'm beginning to accept myself as I am not as I would like to be. I may never be 'normal' again but I'm still me and counting my blessings. You take things just as you are able and don't give a thought to those who would criticise and put you down. Accepting changes in our health is damn hard but if you can do that and work towards your dreams with what strength you have you will become very resourceful at managing so that you may be more liable to achieve your dreams than people who have never faced such a challenge. I hope

You are doing well on your own, and I know what it is like, as I live on my own too with my rescue greyhound Madge. I too have to be careful with what I do, and Madge gets me out walking about 4/5 times a day, but only shortish walks, so it keeps me active. I am 66 years young, but this year have felt things start to hurt in my body! But to carry on getting out in nature is so important to me, and I know you too like this. I understand about knees. I have been doing weed control in my front garden -- horticultural vinegar and epsom salts. Because of my knees and health, I use a garden stool - but it also means sit, spray, stand up, move the stool, move the sprayer container, don't forget my cane, sit - and repeat until the container is empty. Thankfully I ran out of vinegar but more is arriving tomorrow. Thankfully there is Tylenol.
