it's called falsetto voice :S a lot of people do it like the guy from Muse. Although not their best voice, it suits when its used. Though I do love Alan's deep voice for Just Like That and think he should use it more
oh, it's harder than just to say what guitar he uses actually, i don't know about Alan's pedalboards, but i think that he uses minimum of them. he prefers clean sound, but sometimes he uses drive. for example, i've never heard any delay/reverb/tremolo/flanger effects in Tangled Hair or Colour music
