We just bred these yamabuki 2 weeks ago and will start weeding them out soon. We have a costumer who buys all of them. Not sure what he does with them.
I would love to take credit for these koi bu the koi in this video was bred by Izumiya and not by Ushijima Nishikigoi. we do however bred our own koi in Hawaii. Usually 2 to 3 different varieties. This year we bred Kujyaku and sanke. One way to produce great color is to bred a reputable bloodline. For example we use the Matsunosuke line for our Kohaku and Sanke. A combination of diet, water quality and sunlight all play a role is producing color.

It depends on the age of your koi. Even Nisai are sometimes difficult to tell. Look at my video from Marujyu in 2015. One of the Maruju's Grandsons sexes the Yamabuki in the bucket. As the koi get older and during the breeding season, males develop very rough gill plates due to courting the females. You can also tell if it is a male from a discharge from the koi's anal gland. Generally females have a larger frame and males are thinner, however this is not a 100% way of sexing koi.

parents are both yellow (yamabuki ogon) it took years and years of breeding magoi to produce the yellow color.

Yes, they do but we usually buy nisai(2 year old) koi because the shipping process from Japan to Hawaii can be stressful.
