Hi Mikko, because of players like Bill Evans, I decided to play piano like 10 years ago, to understand more about those things to change my guitar playing...by piano playing for a longer time, I try when playing guitar what I did for 35 years now, I try to immedeately plAT STANDARDS THAT i DIN'T STUDY ON GUITAR SO MUCH, BUT DIRECTLY ON GUITAR, because if guitar is 2nd part of your body I found that that is possible without having to make or write arrengements just by playing for a longer time(real serious) piano brings also a thing that is difficult to describe but i found the advantages of that...
Playing piano is a great advantage as a 2nd instrument. It's important to be able to get some knowledge of chord voicings, progressions, substitutions, and arranging ideas on piano no matter what your primary instrument is. I bought a piano and it opened up so much. It's worth the time and effort. ☮
Thanks for that fantastic video. Simply wonderful in all regards. Can't wait for the next one and please more of that guitar with that sound. It sound phenomenal. I've just ordered it.:-)
Nice guitar tone on that Guild! .. I AM NOT A JAZZ'R BUT, SAW A FEW GREAT PLAYERS in Past. Sounds like nice arrangements style. What men, what innovators and musicians they were and, inventors! Thx 4 mini lesson/show. OK, Adios! ..😎🎸
This book is great. Sid Jacob's is great. There are some great videos by Sid Jacob's. His other instructional material, books & DVD's etc. Under rated as a player....ABSOLUTELY! You have that right Mikko. Super video review of this book. I love your book choices. I have most of them myself. Thanks!!!
Over a dominant C7 bar 8(fisrt A) we could when we substitute it by the Bbm7b5 as You did Mikko in the right hand piano play a Ab Eb Db C-Lick so the rythm section substitutes a IV step, than the right hand plays bIII sounds great, all situations where the chords(or left hand, of course for guitarist we want to get rid of pianoplayers)than if your bass player plays Ivm7b5 instead of V7 a bIII lick with sus4 sounds tremendously fine because the Triad of the improv will be sound so nice because the accomp plays the b5 the E of Bbm7b5 will clash friednly and mysteriously with the Eb, (of course taken from alterd scale as you yourself demonstrated Mikko..Thanks to you I relooked this and found this nice alteration
Oh wow I had no idea this book existing. Thank you. It sounds amazing though not sure how many decades of practice I need to log to sound like you do haha. Reminds me of John McGlaughlins brilliant album in which he covers Bill Evans. Cheers!
Excellent. I have this book and I have only looked at a few arrangements. At 16:12 or so, you mention playing the melody note and then the chord. This is a pretty big deal with Sid - often guitarists will play that melody note twice, and Sid would say that they disrespect the melody by doing so. Just making that change will really help your sound. Although it's not easy when you (as I do as well) use hybrid picking - using a pick on the melody and the fingers for the chord.
This is so awesome. I always loved Bill Evans voicings. Lenny Breau really captured his voicings on the guitar. It’s really awesome there is an actual Bill Evans guitar book out!
Another great video Mikko! I just subscribed with my real account as well. I might buy this book, I'm trying to become a complete jazz guitarist. For too many years i just stuck to comping basic changes or freddie green straight 4s, neglecting the more harmonic aspects of the guitar, while waiting for my turn to take a solo. It looks like i'm going to my audition the first week of november. I gotta have a solo piece ready, and while i already have pretty basic versions of misty, autumn leaves, and black orpehous, I see you have a arrangment of you must belive in spring. I love that tune, so i'm probably going to learn your version. Wish me luck! i have plenty of time to prepare, the only thing i'm worried about is the sight reading, yuck. btw still waiting of the transcribing lesson lol
Oscar Peterson Hymn to Freedom & Salute to Bach or maybe C-Jam Blues are at least very inspring to look at and ad certain licks or what else the 1st and 2nd I arrenged to play on guitar with combo, is realy great inspiration, also WK JS BACH offers great pratcice for walking bass escpecially of WKII trhe prelude in Cminor than transposed to a-minor makes it possible realy nice..to have the melody come out with out breaking the octaves or meldodie...cminor would give problems both in the bass part and the melodie part....
As I came upon this site and saw the book, heard you start to play I knew it had to be a Sid Jacob’s arrangement. Sid Jacobs is a genius and I got some of his arrangements some years ago thru one of his students and can’t believe how he truly gets the Bll Evans sound out of the guitar. Watching him play them is amazing and he’s all around a great jazz guitarist! More people should know who he is because he’s one of a kind. . So glad you made this video.
My conclusion is that, in the end it is important (for me) to rearrenge any tune, is most helpfull the further you go with reharmonise tricks the more you get in the direction of the thinking arsenal of people like Bill Evans, Also I believe that for guitarists implies: The more they invest also in harmony the more they are feeling more free on standards... there are always tricks you could invent yourself if you try hard enough.. for instance to play m7b5 on ech Dominant 4th step...You Mikko did that also, if doing so on a number of standards reaLY PROVIDES THAN skill when you try to at once reharmonise, Bluesette is there for nice(my finding) For instance: Gm7: played as Bbmaj7 and C7 as Bbm7b5 the Bbmaj7 2 bars are nice: I VI II V also at Dbmaj7 and the Bmaj7 another example would be my secret love...very beatiful on guitar with walking bass and chords, taken out of piano arrengements, especially in Bbmaj...
Great lesson maestro, very educational content - learned a lot of new stuff from this video!)Where can I buy this book in pdf format with mp3 examples ?
@@YuriStolov If you go to Amazon and search for the book it should come up. If not maybe it's out of stock. I don't know which online book stores you have in your country but here over there are many options if I just do a google search for the the book. :)
I bought the book from Sid himself many years ago, brilliant player and equally great articulate and generous teacher. I'll dig the book out and it's just the time to have a look again.
You can also do the Lenny Breau technique . Play your drop 2 voicings then bring the dropped note back up an octave by playing the harmonic up 12 frets at the same time you pluck the other chord tones. You get the closed position chords.
What I also would recommend is especially My Foolish Heart(not too hard on guitar) and how deep is the Ocean, Soon my prince will come, when it comes to Bill Evans arrengements for guitar with doable heads...
I'm actually playing through two amps in stereo here. The Lunchbox is amazing considering how small it is. The have new amps I think that they just released that I want to look into 👀
Ha! I studied with Sid Jacobs right when I moved to LA (I moved out, couldn't hack the traffic situation)! Lemme tell ya, he was the deepest cat I ever met that played a guitar. I wish my finger style chops were better so I could have continued with him and gone deeper into Jimmy Wyble's concept.
@@Mikkokosmos Mikko, check him out pronto. Since you have a classical background, at least from some of the videos you've posted, you'd love Jimmy Wyble. He's been described as the Bartok of jazz guitar by many. There's a bunch of his stuff from a cafe in Pasedena, California, where Jimmy plays his compositions and more. Sid was very close with Jimmy. Sid also helped me find my first guitar tech in LA. A very deep and kind soul, Sid is!
