- The second Vatican Council was a monumental event in the history of the Catholic Church. It resulted in some radical changes to the way Catholics celebrate their faith. While Vatican 2 causes arguments, it can also call us to renew our faith.
Tradition is so important. Many young people actually hunger for tradition. Modern culture tells them to deny everything that the Church once built its philosophies on. I for one am seeking Catholicism for that very reason- I hunger for tradition, ritual, initiation, an axis, something steadfast.
Rituals. Jesus called the priest in his time hypocrites, vipers because they were all about rituals but their hearts was far from God. He told them nor you come to the Father no let others come. Jesus came not only to die on the cross for our sins but to also have a relationship with the Father. Its not about rituals but a relationship with God and Jesus. Talk one on one with God.
@@normacortes8708 I agree that if our hearts and our rituals disagree we are hypocritical. But what if our rituals bring our hearts closer to God? Regular prayer, communal worship, visiting the sick, baptism. All of these are rituals.
@@mattfyfield If you're rituals keep you close to God good. Don't forget to just talk to Him also. I hear his voice more when I just talk to Him. When I ask Him questions. He wants a relationship where we're not just riciting or talking but Him talking back. I pray for others and myself but when I just talk to him He responds. It's mind blowing. I feel like this is what He wants. To just talk to Him. Keep seeking God and Jesus. Keep loving on Him. God bless.

I am 33 years old and have only just reverted back into my Catholic faith. I am yearning for tradition in the Church. I do not want new aged ANYTHINGs in the mass. I do not want the distraction from what the mass is for. As a child i did not appreciate this. In this lead up to the plenary council here in Australia I am fearful of an even more fractured Church. Sad. I would rather the rows of empty pews than seeing the holy mass being turned into a performance of some kind.
There is no new age stuff happening in the Church. If there was, that person would be excommunicated

The worse thing that ever happened after V2 was the folk mass and the weak catechesis. As far as the mass being prayed in the language of the people, I'm all for that! Before I felt like an observer and now I'm a participant. As far as lay ministers and lectors, I can take or leave that. I am happy to serve because that is what is being asked of me but one of the reasons I love Lent is because the priest doesn't use ministers for daily mass. Praying in a foreign language just doesn't make sense to me but if you feel closer to Jesus with the old Latin mass, then I'm glad you still can worship that way. As far as kneeling to receive, some of us can't kneel anymore so I like when a communicant can choose their posture to receive the Eucharist. In the early church, the Eucharist was received in the hand. I believe the PR caused some changes in the manner of the liturgy. I was taught to create a throne with my hands for the King of Kings. I wore veils on my head until the mid 60s and V2 changed that. If you like to, wear it. Isn't the disposition of the worshiper, penitent, or communicant more important than their clothing or posture?

I've experienced both. I think the disposition of the worshiper is vital and having grown up with the pre-Vat 2 liturgy, I prefer the Novus Ordo

It's easy to look at the past with rose tinted lenses. There were some horrid abuses during the pre vatican II liturgies, and there were a lot of awful muttered and terribly done "TLM"s. The people who worship this imagined idea of the Pre Vatican II liturgy have little knowledge of the evolution of the liturgy, it's evolved a lot before Trent and after, so to hold it to the one standard that happened in the 1500s is to ignore hundreds of years of changes.
The V2, from what I gather, is one of those instances when "good intentions" paved the way for unforeseen consequences. There is a sense behind the retention of old traditions. As I grow older, I am understanding that now. The V2 stripped the mystery away from the worship and put the whole thing into bad English.
So true! Afterall, the Church is the body of Christ, and the body of Christ is made up of sinners. There is enough mystery in the Church without adding a language barrier.

The true problem with V2 has nothing to do with the actual teachings of the council, it has to do with the lack of discipline that has resulted from it. Priests, bishops, and the laity seem to think that V2 gave them license to do whatever they want "in the spirit" of V2 without holding to the actual teachings of the Church. For instance, the priest or an anointed deacon is still supposed to be the only person handing out the eucharist, not members of the laity except in extraordinary situations when no priest or deacon is available (Canon 230.3). This was meant to assist in dire situations such as taking the eucharist to a dying person. Now, it is very common to have members of the laity handing out communion at every mass against Church law. Reinstate discipline!
There are indeed problems with the documents of the council. They reinterpret Church teachings on false religions and now supposedly Muslims and Jews are worshiping the same God as Catholics even though they deny the Trinity and the Son. That in and of itself is blasphemy in the highest order and what started the accelerated decline of the Church into sexual perversion and debauchery. Every time the Covenant people stray into false religions, as is explained in the Bible since the beginning of time, God visits chastisement upon them which is exactly what is happening to the Holy Church right now.
The Spirit of Vatican 2 is a wicked spirit named Satan.

The worldwide majority who remain with this false church have departed from the true faith. Scripture speaks about the falling away and even the very elite will be deceived. Once the spiritual blindness of many who follow this "new church" be hopefully up lifted only through the mercy of God, they will then realise that the spirit of the Antichrist rules in their church and over them. One needs only to see the blasphemous rotten and demonic fruits of Vatican Council 2. The blind will remain blind. These are the majority who refuse to seek truth and righteousness.

The reason being is that the RC Church is the covenant people with whom God in Christ expanded his covenant not to blood only but to those who do the will of the Father.
The Church has always consisted of good and bad members. Now that the majority of the bishops and even the Holy Father are on the wrong side of the fence a reckoning is about to ensue. The Jews went through many an Apostasy. The Church will be undergoing Her own Crucifixion. This current debacle is leading up to it.
I don't see why this "Church of the New Advent" can't be a bunch of bad Catholic church members who are betraying Christ by embracing Modernism. Yes they will receive their just reward. I think all the deciding who is who is up to Christ not us. God allowed this to happen for a reason. He is in complete control over what is allowed to happen to His Holy Roman Catholic Church.

The Roman Catholic Church has been reduced to a faithful traditional remnant who have recognised this false church and have departed from her. They strongly condemn and expose the false antiChrist church for what it truly is. Rome and its adherents of the 2nd Vatican Council have rejected true Catholicism and embraced a false church.

The secon Vatican Council was a mistake; the pastoral atmosphere Vatican I was cut off ; or was lost.
The modernization of the church confused the faithful.
It was a rustic, traditional atmosphere in the society ; like a classic pastoral environment.
The poor and the rural people wereat peace; and people would like to relax in the life among the peasants and the rural hills and valleys . Older folks would wake up before sunlight to go to the church at early Holy mass.
The people were taught and were enjoying the good traditional life and ways.
Children were taught how to love the traditions and avoid modern vices: such as drugs. Easy virtues were condemned but tolerated, like drinking at the bar; or serenading women by the windows.
It was easy , romantic life; and slow . It was good; not hectic; not like a rat race.

Lots of interesting comments in this thread. It is interesting to me that some are quoting the decisions of past Popes to argue that the modern Popes are in error. Either we believe that the papacy is flawed or that it has authority. If we become the arbiters of when the Pope is right and wrong, are we not undermining the very unifying nature of the office?

I was born after vatican 2 and i have only attended the new mass and i believe christ is present in the new mass also but when i see latin mass i see great amount of devotion to christ and i fell in love with it...if i had to choose i would choose the latin mass but it dosent mean that i dont believe in the new.....i am deeply in love with christ and the latin mass because i believe we surrender completely to god in the latin mass. There is a great amout of peace in the latin mass..

I'm happy for you. Two kinds of masses provide division and that is a drawback. I love the Novus Ordo because it's everything the Mass is supposed to be without a language barrier.

For many people commenting on this section, they seem to be hung up on the Latin mass. Just FYI, Latin was not the language that Jesus and the Apostles spoke . In fact the language they spoke was Aramaic which is currently not spoken anywhere in the middle-east. Latin is a dead language too. The mass is a celebration of the last supper when Jesus said: do this in memory of me. He did not mention that the mass has to be celebrated in the manner that is done in Church today. In fact he didn't even mention that a "priest" has to lead the mass. Any good Christ believing person can break bread in his name. Wine, which is not a drink available in many parts of the world, need not be used. Millions in Asia and Africa never heard of wine until modern times and travel. Lastly Jesus never dictated that the last supper be done in a certain language. If you want to follow "tradition" don't follow the so called tradition of the Roman church which was established during the takeover of Rome by Christian (around 400AD) and the establishment of the RC Church. Follow the original teachings of the Bible.
Finally please don't let a ritual dominate your belief in Jesus. Follow his teachings: Love your neighbor as yourself and do good unto others. If you follow this one golden rule you will be doing exactly what Christ wanted you to do. The world will be a better place and we would have peace and happiness everywhere. Amen!
Exactly. Latin wasn't the language of Jesus or his early followers. There's a lot of tradition that survives today, that wasn't practiced at that time. I get it that followers of the Latin rite feel a special bond with it, but observing mass in the language of the people doesn't make it less reverent. It only feels that way because Latin is a language that isn't widely spoken, so it gives a mysterious and special effect.
You're missing the point in a childishly silly sort of way. Do you really think anyone needs to be told that Jesus didn't speak Latin? That's not the point. Honoring Sacred Tradition has everything to do with the liturgical recognition that we are not superior to the peoples of the past and that truth, because it is nothing but the reflection of the mind of God, never changes. Truth is immutable. Man creates no truth at all. We can witness truth. We can even be creative in witnessing truth. But we create truth, because truth is eternal. Only our vanities tell us we can outperform God. We don't even possess truth. Truth possesses us. Liturgical continuity is not a frivolous matter. Honoring the communion of Saints and the Church Triumphant is an obligation. If you don't know what such things mean, the fault is with you.

Jesus spoke Aramaic, but when he attended synagogue he spoke Hebrew. This shows us the very important aspect of having a separate language reserved for worship. We should not be using the same language we use to describe vulgarity and coarse language to worship God.
Additionally, Latin is a sacred language, because along with Hebrew and Greek, it was written on the cross where Jesus was crucified. Like most things in the Bible, this was not just a coincidence, and is in fact very important.
Each of the major Churches of the pentarchy had their specific sacred language that they adopted. The Churches of Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem spoke Hebrew. Constantinople spoke Greek, and Rome spoke Latin. Each of these languages should be spoken in their respective rites.
Finally, Vatican II stated that Latin should still be primarily used for most of the mass in the Roman rite. Vernacular language was only meant for the readings and gospel, but of course like everything else with Vatican II, lack of oversight allowed this to happen.
So follow the Bible compiled and preserved solely by the Catholic Church?
Ecumenism can also be defined more broadly: "a movement that promotes worldwide through greater cooperation." For example, a Christian priest may invite a Muslim imam to speak in his pulpit, or a church may get together with a Hindu temple to hold a joint prayer service. My understanding is that a lot of the visual changes that occurred were claimed to be made in the “spirit” of Vatican II but weren’t changes called by the council. A lot of the beige-ing of the church, the removal of imagery and statues the relocation of the tabernacle to the side the re orientation of the priest facing the people were changes that Vatican II didn’t actually call for but we’re approved in the thought that it made the church more accessible especially to non Catholics. The true calling the council was after was for Catholics to have a better understanding of why they do what they do and not just doing cause that’s what your supposed to do. Another problem that was happening was that a lot of the priest that were formed in the early 20th century weren’t well form catechetically they we unable to answer deep questions from the laypeople. A priests formation was focused more on saying mass and administering the sacraments and less on evangelizing.

You should read Acts 16. When Paul is asked what one must do to be saved, he responds by saying that one must believe in Jesus Christ. This contradicts the Medieval Catholic teaching that only Catholics go to heaven and also the modern Catholic teaching that non-Christians can go to heaven.
That's why Sola Scriptura is so important, because unlike the papacy, God's Word never changes. The gates of hell have prevailed against Rome, but they have not prevailed against the universal church, which is made up of true Christians across several denominations.

Thanks for this. - Good summary on a superficial level but in stating that this council was called to treat of modernism you ironically and entirely miss the point and the underlying reality that what Vatican II really did in its focus on those main elements (Call to holiness, Christian unity, Technology, Renewal, Scripture, and the Eucharist/Mass) was to use them as familiar hinges upon which they attached an entirely new door, opening onto a new and different church and making the faithful believe that things would essentially remain the same. But that's just it: instead it radically changed those very hinges on which Truth hinges (pun intended) in serious ways that undermined not only Tradition but dogmas of the Faith that had been its teaching for 2,000 years. As this new door slowly opens wider and wider, we continue to see all manner of modernism creeping in (- entering at warp speed these days) and with it the distortion of teaching and the decimation of Tradition, especially of the Mass itself. Change worship and you change the faith. That is exactly what the architects of Vatican II had in mind, and it worked. In short, Vatican II wasn't so much meant to _address_ modernism as to _promulgate_ modernism, the synthesis of all heresies, as Pope St Pius X so astutely identified. We must pray very much for the restoration of the _true_ One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. May God help us!

A consideration of Vatican II using the concepts of genus and species.
Without getting into the historical background, inner workings and doctrinal details of the Vatican II documents and rather relying on what most Catholics know about it the following analogy I think is most revealing:
Aristotle says that the natural way of learning and coming to know things is from the generic to the more specific. Just as when we see something moving in the distance we first identify it as a body and then as it moves closer an animal and even closer a man and finally as this particular person Socrates.
Now it needs to be understood that there is a difference between our knowledge of a thing and the thing itself. Our knowledge is always more generic than the thing itself existing in reality which is very specific. If someone were to give the definition of the species of a thing instead of giving the definition of the genus of that thing one would give a more precise and fuller account of the thing. In other words the more specific our knowledge becomes of something the closer our knowledge resembles the thing. The truer our knowledge is, in the sense of having more truth - adeguatio res et intellectus.
This is the natural way man comes to know. To try to move in the opposite direction is unatural and against human nature. To try to forget what one already KNOWS about something in order to know it more generically is an act of violence against oneself. It would entail force that goes against one's own nature.
Now what is more generic and less specific is more universal. Whereas as what is more specific is more exclusive. In the same way when one says the word animal it can apply to many things. Where when one says man it excludes many things and applies to just one type of animal. Now things that exist in reality ARE NOT generic they are specific.
The Church founded by Our Lord is a real existing reality. It is something specific with its own essential elements and properties.
Now the Councils, pronouncements and doctrines through the ages became more and more specific. The Church's awareness of itself approached more and more the reality of its own being. It is impossible to move in the other direction. In other words it is impossible to move from a specific knowledge to a more general confused knowledge. A generic knowledge of anything is always more confused than a specific one, just as knowing something only in so far as it is an animal is more confused than knowing it specifically: a man. Instead our knowledge specifies as we gain acquantaince and experience of a thing. This should.not be confused with the knowledge particular persons had of the Church. Ofcourse the apostles and early Christians had a very specific knowledge of the Church. However the Church's formulated doctrine was not as specific. Throughout the centuries this doctrine became better formulated and more specific. This was neccesary especially to rule out heresy and error. A more generic knowledge on the other hand is more open to heresy and error.
Now, in order for Vatican II to be less divisive, open to non Catholics and ALSO IN ORDER FOR THERE TO BE CONSENSUS AMONGST THE COUNCIL FATHERS, THE COUNCIL HAD TO REVERSE THE NATURAL PROCEDURE AND PROCLAIM SOMETHING MORE GENERIC THAN PREVIOUS COUNCILS.
Now one could argue that the council taught no error. Entering into this debate is not easy and not for the most of us. However knowing that the council purposefully decided to be less specific and more generic is known by all of us. Can we say that a generic knowlwdge of a thing is deficient compared to a fuller specific knowlwdge of a thing? Trying to go against oneself and forget what one once knew creates the impression that one must have been wrong once upon a time. Because why else would one try to forget what once knew? Especially if what one once knew one used to think was valuable and true, a treasure to be safeguarded.
How many people do we know who have used Vatican II to look back and interpret older Councils? Anything more specific than the Council is frowned upon as superfluous and outdated. But does truth age? Never the less can we blame them for acquiring this habit when this is a natural consequence of artificially regressing and not progressing in knowledge? Of trying to be less specific and more generic.
I leave you to draw the conclusions.

As a Protestant I might be missing something, but I love hearing Scripture in my mother tongue, which is obviously not Latin and not even English. Roman Catholics are known for not reading Scripture, so if you only have Mass in Latin, what do you learn? Muslims believe Allah only listens to Arabic, but we God speaks all languages. And like what's been said, beautiful traditions were brought back.
A lot of traditionalists (even I myself) tend to forget all the good fruit of the council based on the teachings of the great Saints, like: renewed focus on Scripture and Tradition, relations to the secular and political world, "Christifying" cultures, empowering the laity, reforms against legalistic clericalism, etc. The fact is, the clergy and laity of the 1950s, even conservatives, were dissatisfied, and deeply aware that the liturgy and ecclesiology of their time needed reform. Of course, the revitalization of worship and evangelization never stops, we laity should continue to participate in the life of the Holy Church.

I think the Second Vatican Council was the best thing to happen to the modern Church. All the claims about modernism are false, the Council did not condone that. It brought back centuries old practices that had been long forgotten. In their words, they brought to the Mass 'fully concsious and active participation'.
Prior to V 2 there were so many priests, recently ordained had to work in hospitals as there were too many parish priests. After V2 everything collapsed. Just a coincidence?? No way.

Vatican II did not change the mass except to remove the repeated Confiteor and remove psalm 42 and remove the last gospel and prayers for the church these was the only changes. The mass was said in the vernacular up to the Sanctus when it reverted to Latin for the cannon and the communion at the Pater Noster we went to the vernacular to the conclusion of mass and there was no last gospel or prayers for the church. This was the right of mass from the first Sunday of advent 1966.
We had had these changes since 1962 in all English speaking countries known commonly as the rite of Paul vi. Then in 1970 we got the protestant mass we have today the novus ordo or the clown mass, it was not blessed by Paul vi though he brought it in it is protestant and that is what is wrong with it, all the priest were up in arms but because of obedience to the pope nothing came of it. We do not need a mass that is not a mass it is there solely for the people and does not celebrate what it should be.
Also the Vatican II brought in concelebrated mass where you could have 100 or more Priests concelebrating the same mass where one priest would be sufficient, but this came later.
The mass they changed in the first place was the Gregorian rite of mass you may know it as the Tridentine Rite. I am a pre Vatican II person being born on Holy Saturday 1944 and had 20 years before the changes that Vatican II made to the religion and believe me they made changes I have resisted and will resist. And Vatican ii did not bring in the novus ordo, it was Paulvi that brought these in and it was against his own thinking he brought it in on the advise of Bouneny a so called catholic bishop he stole the service from the church of England it was in the book of common prayer from 1963 and we made three changes to it we took out the quick and the dead and put in our own cannon, you know it is protestant when you read after the our father, for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever i have never been able to find this in the bible.
Vatican II was a mistake from the start and caused more confusion because bishops could not agree on the points of it. It should be scrapped by the church but that will not happen under Bigolio. He has his ideas he is not catholic.

The other error they made was that all religions can go to god, and it was taught that only catholics could gain heven by the pre consilliar church. One of the outcomes of Vatican II, in my opinion, is Sacriliege and that everyone with a good conscience will go to heaven there is no need to believe in Jesus Christ. This comes from a lack of Spiritual literacy and theology. Jesus never claimed anyone with a good conscience is worthy of heaven. He is the only way to heaven. " I am the resurrection and the life nobody will come to Father but me". There is more stuff in this Vatican II that this short space will not allow it.

Vatican II has in fact been an unmitigated disaster for the Catholic Mass. Going to Mass in many countries today is like going into a karaoke bar with so-called choirs shouting out hymns during the Eucharist, often to the accompaniment of improper modern instruments such as saxophones. The music of these songs is often adapted from popular 60s 70s, or other pop songs, which makes a mockery of the service. Unlike the early Medieval Church, when I believe the more gentle music of popular songs was sometimes adapted, there is nothing spiritual about these songs today. There may have been some benefits brought about by Vatican II, but as regards the Mass it looks like Luther has finally won.
Agreed The music was suppose to stay with gregorian chant being the ideal, and the organ. Other instruments could also be used if they were reverent. But chant and the organ were suppose to stay the norm. What we have now is electric guitar, drums and horrible folksy music. Our faith and liturgy have been robbed from us by liberal boomers, who as usual feel they know what is best for everyone
I'm sorry you have that experience. Our music is totally liturgical and never pop music. In fact, I have not heard folk music in church since the 60s and I praise God for that.
@@donnarichert5627 you're very lucky. I wrote my comment all of 3 years ago but as far as I have personally experienced not much has changed. Just recently I went to a Mass where the music of Simon & Garfunkel's ballad "The Sound of Silence" was sung during the service to a very loud electric organ. One could see that the Latino congregation attending didn't know any better; they are being fed these old pop songs by church authorities who think this is a trendy way to modernize the liturgy and attract more parishioners. The beautiful original lyrics had been totally changed into some soppy ridiculous Spanish lyrics, an insult to Simon & Garfunkel and to the Eucharist.

The church must stay in its traditional roots. Just because people think certain things are okay, doesn’t mean it’s okay by God. For, the church to change because of fashion, Hollywood, technology, and nonCatholic influences, Instead of what God says is right and wrong. Not cool!
Joel Osteen, for example does not teach about the consequences of sins, but instead feeds people’s egos with prosperity preaching. Jesus tell people to lay down the attachment of possessions, but Osteen says Gods going to give you what things he owes you.

I'm glad you enjoy the Latin mass and that it's available to you. As for me, no more. I had my fill as a child/adolescent. I had the opportunity to attend in my 30s and nothing changed. Give me the Novus Ordo anyday.
Vatican 2 made a big mistake with Islam.
Because of Lumen Gentium 2.16 Popes since 1969 are completely blinds about coran's reality.
