I recently dug out and old antenna out of the garage put it up and receiving some decent channels. Thanks for the videos would have never done it keep up the good work I dig the passion you have for it.
I have been using Wondershare Uniconverter for a couple of years now. I like it. It has proven easier and more flexible to use than my Pinnacle Studio that I have used for over 10 years. It also doesn't use as much CPU as Pinnacle.
I respect every word you've ever said on this Channel!!! Love ya!!! I'm still using the best according to you!!! It still works great!!! It's been 6 years now. Love all the way from Trapper Creek Alaska!!!✌🏻❤😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I literally grew up in TV. I became an antenna guy running crews when I was 12 years old. If a booster goes bad disconnect and wire it straight. It really does not need it anyway for short wired antenna systems. Distribution amps helps in covering many rooms and or homes. The best gain is obtained with 0 db noise, how many detectors and good reflectors. Your 200 mile range can only be obtained with the correct line of sight and a limited number of items to block the signal. I trained myself and began MATV in a large area of very deep fringe TV reception. We installed multiple homes, nursing homes, hospitals, and motels. I eventually began working with High Q boxes and channel traps for separate channel antennas. I'm an old man now but I enjoyed my work. In some valleys in the mountains we built repeaters to deliver signal to very remote locations. These antennas can all be capable of very long distance reception if the line of sight is available. If not no antenna will work. At one time this was the only way to get TV in deep fringe areas. Keep up the good work young man because with the satellites what goes up will come down. With the new digital technology antennas could easily become the norm again. Keep researching.
I no longer need antenna advice as I have one that picks up all the channels I need. But somehow this content is just so satisfying. I will keep watching
Your right, truth in advertising needs to be enforced !!!! Keep up the good work kid!!! Franklin S Werren 50 years of installing experience in TV antennas.
We once tested 20 different store (internet) bought antennas. 19 of them were no better than a coat hanger. One had a VSWR of 3, making it marginally effective. Buying antennas is a minefield. Thanks for giving advice.
I bought one of these "Junk" antennas (LAVA) in 2010. The rotator never worked, but the amplifier worked until recently one day. The problem I had was that the power supply failed, but the amplifier still worked when I substituted another power supply to get it back going. Actually, I used the power supply from a Channel Master 7777 to power it. I would classify this antenna as being "Functional" yet flimsy, so it would be best to use it as an indoor / attic antenna, that is, if you already have one to play with (Don't buy). My experience is that it was better on UHF than VHF, given the same signal strengths for both frequencies. As a cord cutter and "Experimenter" plus with a wife who doesn't care what I put on the roof . I recently bought the Antenna's Direct 8DXB (Or DBX8 as it's also called, I think) for $45 with sales tax and a coupon. Great antenna, but did not pick up any VHF which I totally expected upon my purchase (Totally fine). I paired this with my Channel Master 7777 amplifier on a tripod in my family room (Temporarily until mounting on the roof with another VHF antenna). We are about 30 air miles North of Baltimore Television Hill transmitters, and I receive all but the two VHF stations, but all other UHF channels are very strong (Not surprising). We also receive UHF channels from the Harrisburg market which is about 60 air miles away (UHF). My Channel Master 7777 has a separate VHF input, so I took the VHF elements off of the "Junk" antenna and attached it to the VHF only input to of the amplifier (Using a balun and short coax), and this added back the two Baltimore VHF stations and the one VHF station from the Harrisburg / Lancaster market (And stronger than before). I also think that the amplifier you use makes the difference, so the right antenna combination for your area (Which can differ for each of us) along with a good amplifier (I think Channel Master Titan presently) seems to be the right combination to consider. My experience, but what do you think?
@@MrMikey1273 Yes, WGAL. The other two are WJZ and WBAL. I would like to get WPVI, but I am not sure if I can rig a VHF-Low add on to the existing antennas I have. I would like to get one of those spectrum analyzers to tweak this.

Nice! Hopefully I'm able to get at least a very decent antenna. If I can pick up WUNU (nearly 100 miles away from me) with junk, I can imagine what I pick up with a Winegard antenna.
@@JustJaidenism A small Walmart (Onn) rabbit ears antenna, which I'm hoping to change very soon. Probably a line of sight thing, still very impressive for a station of that far distance. I got WMYV 48 in Greensboro and a low power station also on Channel 31 that night. I got pictures to prove it too, I may post them eventually.
@@friesareyummy I think you're experiencing something called tropospheric ducting. Do you live near the coast or something, or somewhere you can point your antenna towards NC, and it goes over the water? It tends to be stronger over the water.

My personal experience is that adding a preamp to an antenna only makes things worse. Even when I was trying to pull in signals from San Diego (I live in LA) a preamp made things worse. This was in the days of analog TV. A large antenna, mounted high, with good cable RG-6, could pull signals about 100 miles away. In fact, I could get analog signals from Tijuana, Mexico. The switch to digital made this a lot harder to pull off. As a side note, I could talk to fellow hams in San Diego with just 5 watts on the 2 meter FM band. One watt was possible, but it was very scratchy.
I agree with Tyler that the cheap Amazon antennas have awful preamps. I tried two indoor models and got more channels without the preamp than with it. I returned both and bought an acceptable RCA. The RCA preamp was pretty good.
I just need an antenna strong enough to give me a good picture and sound so I can watch other people in stadiums and arenas chance let’s go Brandon! Let’s go Brandon!🇺🇸
1. Antennas can't give you better sound or picture. It varies per station's kbps (audio) and mbps (picture). What does come with a strong antenna is the lack of "no signal" from locals and more stations from other places. 2. Why is Let's Go Brandon a popular chant now? Boosting the ego of a former politician seems funny to me, but people are actually serious about that chant.
@@friesareyummy i think its so popular because everything is getting expensive and this guy is purposely running our country into the ground. That's all🙃its about the new guy doing a horrible job, not about boosting the oarnge guy. C'mon man!
Before discovering this channel, I bought and used one of those cheap amplified antennas. It appealed to me mostly because it was small and easy to install. It worked o.k. for about two years and now it's in the landfill, replaced with a REAL antenna that works SO much better. A waste of $40. Oh well. Live and learn. At least it worked well for about two years before dying. Just lucky, I guess.
Probably and most likely, your RG 6 cable went bad and needed replaced. Might have taken a lightning bolt hit that damaged the center conductor and separated the center conductor transmission disconnecting the signals from going through.
I have one of the other ‘worse’ variants. Definitely Chinesium through and through, but I do think the main culprit for why the preamp fails is a shitty soldering job at the connector - specifically the pick-off point for the power supply. For my application it’s still sufficient since I’m roughly 3 miles from 90% of the transmitters in my area, and I’m mainly making use of its [what I would consider] ‘modest’ directivity capabilities to eliminate the multipath issue I have (my apt backs up to a large metal factory building). On particularly clear days I have pulled in a UHF station that is 70 miles, though I think the metal factory building aided as a big reflector in that case. They’re still garbage nonetheless

Hey Tyler. Five star makes a version that does not have a built-in preamp. I ordered one for my place in the mountains and it doubled the amount of channels I could receive. Would love to see you review that one.
I build some of my own antennas, but adhere to common knowledge among audio and video people. First, homemade antennas work well if you're close to the source of the signal only. At close range they are excellent. Here, homemade works good. Now, if you are further away from the signal source, these homemade ones will fail long before a good factory made and tested antenna will. I saw a professional installer on UA-cam removing a dish and replacing it. He did not make anything for or even use the dish. He tossed it and put in a factory antenna on the mount. Then he set the direction and it worked well. His words were that antennas are not that expensive and for the money spent, the extra clarity and range of a factory made, and tested one, is worth it. I just bought a cheap factory one and it is true. Even this one that cost me 7 dollars equalled many of the smaller antennas I have built.
I bought the cheap one that you told people not to buy because I am just now seeing your channel. I live in a densely packed area, milwaukee, and the antenna works just fine. Just so people know. But I wouldn't buy it again simply listening to what you've said about it
I have this antenna, I've had it for 2 yrs. I plan to get a new one this summer. It works ok but l think l could get more with a better one. Thanks for the info. Very informative.
Thank you Antenna man! wow I was going to buy this on Amazon today, glad I found you. What I really need is an Antenna that will bring in a strong internet signal from a tower here in Tonopah AZ... got real bandwidth problems with what I have, only 19mbps here and when I have been watching for an hour or so i get the dreaded pin wheel.... OH its so hard to take after you have paid 3.99 or 5.00 bucks to rent a movie. YOU SIR HAVE MY THUMBS UP AND I HAPPILY SUBSCRIBED thanks for your time
I’ve had the “junk” model for 4 years. Gets great signal and we are 60 miles away from the tower in a place where wind typically gusts up to 60mph a few days a year. Get stations 100 miles away on clear days. Also don’t have to post directly at station tower. I highly recommend the “junk” model. But, it finally died due to ice. Tried the FSA-3806 antenna you are showcasing here- and the inability to direct it left or right was more to overcome than I desired. Press the button and it “may” move, just not the direction I wanted.
All my channels are within 10 miles radius. Can I get pretty much any antenna. I was considering this one. But everything you review is 43 miles which doesn’t answer question I have, but your videos provide great concept and overall knowledge of the principles of how antennas work. Thank you for your amazing work.
I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the bad preamp on this antenna to get a picture ....... would it be possible to wire around it and what would the quality of the picture be ?
Taylor your the Man!!! LOL!!!! Love you passion! (kinda like me!) My brother was going to cut the cord I told what outdoor antenna I recommended and ended getting a cheap stick on the window antenna and said it didn't work so kept cable!! I let him have it and he hung up on me!! LOL!! I took him out for breakfast the next day. All is well.
PLEASE. From now on, your videos will need to be rated with regards to the violent content or a mention if no antennas were injured during the filming. I'm now suffering of a major PTSD. Every time I see one of these antenna outside a house, I can only see the suffering that both the antenna and the owner will be subjected to. Pretty scary ! 😱
This was hysterical and informative. I'd like to know more. I too live in southeast pa and use just a simple rabbit ear set up that gets me around 30 channels but would like to maybe get a better one. Clearly I'm not ready to pick a better one yet
I have 2 relateable comments! 1) Back in August I drove down to Ithaca for a few days. Cruising the back roads from Schenectady, I was amazed at how many rural homes I saw (in the middle of nowhere) using cheap, "ping-ding-ling-fing-ring-a-ding-ding" antennas on their roof's! I would love to have knocked on their doors and asked to check their reception! 2) I FEEL Tyler's anger! I deal in LED flashlights, and there are far too many consumers who waste money on cheap no-name- products that either don't work well from the box, or break soon after buying them! They don't realize what a difference there is between "generic" brands, and quality brands. I TRY to warn them...but like Tyler said ... "they buy them anyway".
I wish you would tell us what we SHOULD by, rather than what we should not. I am using one of those beam type antennas that you say we should not buy, and it is the only thing that I have found that does work. I live about 60 miles from LA.
No thanks, people should've kept their pre 2000 era antennas with all metal construction, not with plastic that will photodegrade over time when they switched to cable or satellite. A facepalm when I hear people said they took theirs down when they left OTA.
yep when i see a old tv antenna in the trash and it looks ok ill pick it out clean it up and use it or give it to somebody who needs it. ive had 3 woo flung dung antennas they worked fine for a few months and either the coax rots or the amp goes out. i got one now i use for fm stereo and works fine for that sucks for antennas.
You are correct. I have a Radio Shack VU-190 I put in early 80's that is still working great even though 2 long elements are broken off due to a owl that liked to sit on them till he finally broke them off. Antenna man is correct there is no such thing as a DIGITAL ANTENNA since this antenna was made in early 80's and has the orginal RG6 cable and on a 40th tower. I receive stations 80 to 100 miles away most of the time depending on weather and NO amp.
I knew from the thumbnail that I would get to see Tyler smash this one! Clicked on it just for that!!! First thought : OMG, Ping Bing Ding plus rotor. The rotor improves(?) the screwing you get from the antenna.
Range depends on how tall the tower it is mounted on. A 1,000 foot tower can get the antenna high enough for direct line of sight to a broadcast antenna more than 200 miles away.
@@katherinewillie9776 Trapper Creek Alaska is only 351 feet above sea level. Where I live is over 3500 feet above sea level and people climb to the top of 1000+ foot towers all the time with no problem. Why would climbing a 1000 foot tower there make anyone dizzy?
My junk antenna is still going strong after three years. The first one I bought lasted a year, that one lighting struck nearby. I think a major killer is do not use the cheap cable that might come with it. Cable quality is critical to any antenna cheap or expensive. Good solid connections and also weather proof them I also sealed the housing. I will upgrade to a better antenna if this one ever dies.
I would have loved to have seen a test after you smashed the antenna!🤣 BTW, I have a coat hanger antenna that I use. I need to install in the attic, but at one point got about 100 channels. I am within 50 miles of a major city.
I bought this model a year ago. I live over 50 miles from the stations. It is hit or miss with signal. When it works, it will run all channels on all 5 tvs and Dish Wally (using in line direct tv 4 way splitter) however when it doesn't it will barely get signal on 1 tv no splitter in the line from the channels that come in on Rabbit Ears. I will say it has better gain than a lot of antennas in it's crap range, but I'd say if you want a good small or medium antenna, stick to an actual good brand. I do know I need a large antenna with an amp to get reliable signal here, just wish this one was more consistent with it's signal.
Great site very informative! Question: do you need a converter box if you have a digital tv for it to work? my uncle was able to plug his antenna right into his digital HDTV without a converter? will i be able to do this with any of my Digital HDTV's and i have one Plasma HDTV?
I hear you!! Can you recommend a quality antenna and where to purchase it. I do have a junk antenna as you put it. Please let me know as i do not want to go back to cable. Thank you..
I know you don’t think much of the cheap antenna. LOL 😂 my mother in law has one under her garage in a old chair. About 3 foot off the ground. She picks up about 4-6 channels that are about 60 miles away. I don’t know how it works at all. And keep telling her she needs a better antenna. Because it’s subject to quit any time. Thanks for the video and information I appreciate your information.
I wondered why the cheap piece of junk I bought only worked for 30 minutes. It was the preamp. Thanks. I would like a recommendation for 70 miles range over fairly flat terrain. I live on a farm northwest of Lubbock, Texas.

Even this one that cost me 7 dollars equalled many of the smaller antennas I have built.
holy crap...this is my first time actually watching your video all way through...do u smash every crap antenna in every video?
You should do a spreadsheet with the results of all of your tests. That way it can make it easy for us to see who's on top!
As long as it's an HD antenna I'm in!
I bought the cheap one that you told people not to buy because I am just now seeing your channel. I live in a densely packed area, milwaukee, and the antenna works just fine. Just so people know. But I wouldn't buy it again simply listening to what you've said about it
Tyler, Stop shopping at Ollie's discount bargains. Jerry in Hatfield
😂
Still love your passion and reviews!
funniest dude on you tube !!!!!
I wanna get a bumper sticker that reads, "Honk If You Dig Antenna Man" !!!!!!! 🤘
I have this antenna, I've had it for 2 yrs. I plan to get a new one this summer. It works ok but l think l could get more with a better one. Thanks for the info. Very informative.
I don't have one I like my clearstream antenna so far does good in my area people need to listen to Tyler he knows what he talking about
Thank you Antenna man! wow I was going to buy this on Amazon today, glad I found you. YOU SIR HAVE MY THUMBS UP AND I HAPPILY SUBSCRIBED thanks for your time
If your signals are strong the antenna below will likely work well at your location:
Televes Dinova Mix
I’ve had the “junk” model for 4 years. Gets great signal and we are 60 miles away from the tower in a place where wind typically gusts up to 60mph a few days a year. Get stations 100 miles away on clear days. Also don’t have to post directly at station tower. I highly recommend the “junk” model. But, it finally died due to ice.
Tried the FSA-3806 antenna you are showcasing here- and the inability to direct it left or right was more to overcome than I desired. Press the button and it “may” move, just not the direction I wanted.
Should've tried testing it after smashing it. Maybe it would've worked then! 🤣 Just kidding. Keep up the good work. 👍
Love it when you go ballistic and destroy shitty antennas. Cathartic and entertaining.
All my channels are within 10 miles radius. Can I get pretty much any antenna. I was considering this one. But everything you review is 43 miles which doesn’t answer question I have, but your videos provide great concept and overall knowledge of the principles of how antennas work. Thank you for your amazing work.
The dramatic music was a nice touch.
WOW! I'll betcha that antenna worked just as good after you smashed it with a rock.
7:17 Do you think the rock smashing activated the pre-amp circuit???? 🤣🤣
NOW SHOWING
ANTENNA MAN
in
"STOMP"
I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the bad preamp on this antenna to get a picture ....... would it be possible to wire around it and what would the quality of the picture be ?
Yes, I would think you could bypass the amp by wiring around it, of course no need for the power supply then either.
Yes
This may make a great Halloween decoration to the show the horror of a poorly made antenna.
Damn, good one.
I watched this just to watch him go off on this antenna. Not disappointed 🤣
That's just good entertainment right there.
Yeees! Tyler smash and rant! Love the channel Tyler.
There has to be a way to bypass the preamp, connect the coax where the preamp's input connects. A smashing video like always :-)
You just saved me 85 dollars thx for the review.
I like the fact you tell it how it is good job mate,,😊
I wish you would tell us what we SHOULD by, rather than what we should not. I am using one of those beam type antennas that you say we should not buy, and it is the only thing that I have found that does work. I live about 60 miles from LA.
This dudes a rockstar and I think he lives semi close. Might hire the dude if I get the spare cash.
Just found your channel and I subed. I was just looking at this antenna.
Tyler has broken more cheap antennas than a windstorm in Taiwan(and I love it).
@@butterbean4195 woo flung dung!?!? I'm laughing so hard right now 🤣
I knew from the thumbnail that I would get to see Tyler smash this one! Clicked on it just for that!!! First thought : OMG, Ping Bing Ding plus rotor. The rotor improves(?) the screwing you get from the antenna.
And yet ping bing ding has a good preamp I like to use lol. The rest of their products seem to make them notorious for being bad.
Range depends on how tall the tower it is mounted on. A 1,000 foot tower can get the antenna high enough for direct line of sight to a broadcast antenna more than 200 miles away.
Ya, go ahead and try to get it that high where I live without getting dizzy climbing up that pole.Trapper Creek Alaska!!!
@@katherinewillie9776
Trapper Creek Alaska is only 351 feet above sea level. Where I live is over 3500 feet above sea level and people climb to the top of 1000+ foot towers all the time with no problem. Why would climbing a 1000 foot tower there make anyone dizzy?
General rule of thumb: the cooler and antenna looks, the crappier it is.
That depends on what you find "cool looking". I thought the aracibo dish looked cool.
@@kensmith5694 What channels does the Arecibo Dish pick up? EXACTLY!!
@@mrchopsticks3 It fell down remember.
@@kensmith5694 Did it? I thought they tore it down.
@@mrchopsticks3 The initial damage was from part of it crashing down. They removed what was left.
I will upgrade to a better antenna if this one ever dies.
my 27 buck one he says is junk it still going strong been in high winds hail ect ect,,,..being close to xenia oh ..i get dayton cincy with no problems
Yes I had the RCA too it's like a shark fin I've had several of them that is a good antenna too
I would have loved to have seen a test after you smashed the antenna!🤣 BTW, I have a coat hanger antenna that I use.
Well of course the build quality has been improved, they probably saw you destroy the last one!
Excellent antenna smashing music!!! Great review!
Good video. Do a video on building your own antenna.
had the onn antenna for about 11 months still works somehow
Sometimes they will make one that works for years. Other times they ship ones that don't work at all.
@@kensmith5694 must of gotten lucky then
@@copyright2662 Yes, never under estimate the power of luck. It messes up your statistics every time.
My cousin bought this, I set it up for her and....nothing.
ooooh, dude getting passionate !
You the Man !
I paid 120 buck for my antenna 20 years and it still works fine
200 Miles Sign me up.... amazing. So small and cheap... I'm taking down my Channel Master by Winegard yaggies and getting this. Ha ha
Bruu, I laughed when he started to smash the antenna!!🤣🤣
Great site very informative! Question: do you need a converter box if you have a digital tv for it to work? my uncle was able to plug his antenna right into his digital HDTV without a converter? will i be able to do this with any of my Digital HDTV's and i have one Plasma HDTV?
That's why I use either brand main antennas like Channel Master and blue sky!!!
I hear you!! Can you recommend a quality antenna and where to purchase it. I do have a junk antenna as you put it. Please let me know as i do not want to go back to cable. Thank you..
Aw, man. That was awesome!
I bought 2 years ago get a range of about 150 miles close to 200 I went from 20 channels to 74 channels
What antenna should we buy for our cabin up north? What do we need for decent signal?
