BG Music:
Styx was super popular through the '70's and '80's. This song points out the issues of a very high unemployment problem in the society, and the way people who act like your friend as long as you are the one footing the bill. A lot of people without work, many of whom engaging in criminal activity to survive, and the leaches who call you friend so long as your buying... This song was just pointing out the way life was at the time!
Amen brother.
This is my favorite STYX song 🎵 ❤️
Styx's catalog can hold up against 90% of the bands of all time.
And its a shame , that their not even in the Rock & Roll hall of fame, like Foreigner, Boston , kansas & Toto 😡😡😡
@@ronaldcardinali2809 Yeah, but bye the time this song came out they pretty much had a POP ROCK vibe to them and we're all played out due to the influx of new bands of the New Wave/Punk scene. But this band DOMINATED the charts through the entire decade of the 70's. They do belong in the HOF, no doubt.
I definitely took them for granted... grew up in a neighboring Chicago suburb to them but was into Alt-Metal at that time (Rainbow, UFO, Scorpions, Armageddon etc) and overlooked them. Over the years I've come to realize the error of my youth and how truly great they are. Have you seen the Tommy Shaw Daryl's House videos? I highly recommend...
Just a fact.
No
All the song you review are songs I've known all my life. At 66 yrs old each song takes me back to a time and a place. To see Lex react to these songs makes me very happy and I love her moment to moment reactions to these epic songs. Keep up the great work.
Styx is even more incredible live than most any other bands I've seen, which are too many to count over the last four decades. Glad you gave them another listen.
I hear man. Excellent live. Definitely one of the best. Keep on rockin' loud and proud!🤟
ua-cam.com/video/SftgE1vfwbk/v-deo.html
This is one of their best, and believe me they had TONS of great songs.
LOL…. It always cracks me up Lexi starts the robot…. It’s truly a lost art form that must be revived. You Rock It Girl.
The Tommy Shaw songs from Styx usually rocked hard!
Lex is a hilarious little character! Her robot moves are Boss and it's extra funny right next to serious Brad with the deep voice.
One of the best things on UA-cam is Tommy Shaw with the Cleveland Youth Orchestra performing "Foolin' Yourself." It is recent and it's on the Styx home page.
They’re great in Concert, seen them with Bad Company and Billy Squire in 01 for my 40th Birthday !
Seeing this reminded me of a story (don't know for sure that it's true) that Billy Squier got an extra cut of the gate if the promoter/venue misspelled his name in any promos or signage.
That sounds like an awesome concert!
I love that lyric, “I’ve got dozens of friends and the fun never ends, that is as long as I’m buying.” Ain’t that true.
Lex is too funny!!!! OMG love Styx havent heard them in a very long time- we use to sing this song on top of our lungs in the car!
Yes! And no matter what you’re doing, you MUST clap 👏 👏
Love Crystal Ball by Styx
Yea Styx, favorite band in my high School days.thanks Brad and lex, keep them coming.😀♥️👍all love 🤗 Jack too ♥️
All this time, I never realized that it was Tommy Shaw singing lead on this song
I don't think Dennis sings any of their fast songs.
Me, too.
@@ckobo84 the title track from "The Grand Illusion" and "Mr. Roboto" aren't exactly slower songs
@@ckobo84 Dennis sings "Rocking the Paradise," which is rather uptempo.
Back when the best lineup was still together... and still alive.😞
Styx. What a band. Better live as well. Fabulous showmen. Great music. Recommend from the album the grand illusion the song man in the wilderness which also features Tommy Shaw on lead vocal. Killer guitar solo as well. Lex I promise you'll love it. Brad the lyrics will catch you man!
Man in the wilderness is one of my all time favorite. I play listen to is a couple times a week. It's just that good.
@@tkblondish5820 I agree as it's my favourite by them. The song is just plain oh yeah!
This Classic Rock staple was written by Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw, who also sang lead on the track. Shaw says he was asked to write one more song for the album, which followed the theme of a concert hall rising to prominence and then crumbling (based on a real venue: the Paradise Theatre in Chicago). Shaw liked the concept, but was having trouble writing songs that fit, which is why "Too Much Time On My Hands" doesn't follow the theme.
He had a long drive to the recording studio, and on one trip, the bassline popped into his head: "dun-dun dun-dun dun-dun-dun-dun." When he arrived, he quickly had the band record what was in his head so he wouldn't lose it. He found himself calling out chord changes as they played, which laid the groundwork for the track.
The song is about a guy who spends his days at the local bar, blustering on about world events or whatever else pops into his head. He's got nothing better to do, and aided by alcohol, he gets a little crazy as he sees his life slipping away.
Tommy Shaw drew inspiration from a real bar in Niles, Michigan, where he was living. He told Styxworld: "I think officially it was called Mark's Tavern, but everybody called it Mark's Bar. It was the local watering hole. The drinks were good, and the drinks were cheap. You could go in there with 20 bucks and be a hero, you know - buying rounds of drinks. And you'd always run into somebody you knew in there. That was the basis of the song."
(Songfacts.com)
Tommy Shaw is great! Thanks for reacting to this song! There is a Live at Daryl’s House show with Daryl Hall and Tommy Shaw..it’s a lot of fun to watch.
My favorite group of all time! Great pick!
I love this song back in '81. I play this song all the time even calling the radio station to keep playing this song.
Great band and song
Great band, so many great songs
Outstanding band! Love all their songs. 💓💓
Miss America, Snow Blind, Man in the Wilderness, Boat on the River are great Styx tunes
Tommy Shaw is a legend.
Omg Lex you crack me up!!
Tho...Tommy did look comfy. 😂🤣
A great MTV video from back in the day. What else to say about this band? Some dispise them but then again many love them.. For me, it depends on the mood I'm in. But one thing for sure , they sold tons of music, filled many a venue and are still touring in some form or another.. This was from a monster selling album which you have heard some other songs already.. Nice reaction..
I don't know... Typical sexy girls, macho guys... Who needs that shit?
I thought the vid was cheesy
Had fun seeing them in '79 and in case you're wondering men's shoulder pads weren't in fashion even a little bit then!
I love you guys and I love the song. So it's a win, win for me.
I have always loved their sound
Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd made a spoof of this video.
A while back, Styx decided to give back to the community, so they did a performance with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra from Cleveland, Ohio that included this song. They did a number of these over the years. The kids (mostly high school age) played as a backup orchestra.
They did an amazing job. Worth a look, too!
ua-cam.com/video/dASsnykRwm4/v-deo.html
Jimmy Fallon did a remake of this video with Paul Rudd. Very funny!
Its a must watch, whenever this song pops in my head I watch that video
I love the robot Lex! Funny
Tommy Shaw 😍. Styx is one of my favorite all time favorite bands. Can't go wrong with any of their songs.
Great band 👍
A great sing along song. Lex was just having too much fun. She's a joy to watch when she gets into a song.
I saw them at Arrowhead Stadium the summer after 6th grade with my parents and the gal next door! It was Tommy Shaws introduction in Styx, as they were in support of the album Crystal Ball. I recorded the show with my cassette recorder. I still have the tapes ;) Echo City lol
Great song and very enjoyable video.
too funny Lex gave shout outs to Tommy's jumpsuit
I'm watching thinking whoever was in charge of his wardrobe should be charged with some misdemeanor crime of fashion or something.
They're one of the few bands that is actually as good or even better live than on studio recording.
I've seen then nearly a dozen times live with various lineups in their band.
The Tommy Shaw and Denis DeYoung combo is still my favorite.
It's like impossible not be in a good mood after listening to their music. It's always uplifting fun and revivifying to the spirit!
you must now watch the Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd recreation of this video - it's fantastic!
Was at a Styx concert in the 80'S, Still the best concert i've been to, And i've been to 14 more afterwards, Styx with Tommy Shaw is bad ass!
A great mix of superb talent and production, helped this band earn the richly-deserved success. Love Styx.
I saw saw them for the second time recently and they are amazing live.🔥🔥
I think it's a play on being a rockstar, being rich and not having to work so they're bored.
There were a few sarcastic "we're rich rockstars and you're not" songs back during that time. "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh is another one that springs to mind. I guess it was a thing back then, before they made it, that people would say a musician wasn't a real job, so rubbing it in people's faces that once successful, it was the easiest and best paying job around seemed to be like a right of passage for a lot of bands. I guess it still kind of is and always will be. They still sing/rap about how they're killing it at the bank and are way richer than you can ever dream of being, living the life.
Cheers.
Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
Taking Care Of Business - Bachman Turner Overdrive
Earache My Eye - Cheech and Chong (special honorary mention)
Rock and Roll Fantasy - Bad Company
Bingo
Never a freer spirit than Lex.
I heard this song about a year ago and wondered if it would get Lex's boogie going.... Yep!
Styx is awesome. They are from my home state. Love them. They have a ton of great songs
You gotta check out their song "Crystal Ball"! It's another awesome hit!
I just love it😍
I like to watch your reactions 🔥👑💝
Love you guys. Brad is always scowling and Lexi is always smiling.
I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago and Styx used to practice in their garage a couple streets over. True Story and yes I'm old. I know where they shooed for music and their guitars. Kern Music Chicago Il
Those shoulder pads sucked man lol.
Didn't expect to see Dennis DeYoung featured in the thumbnail photo for your "Too Much Time On My Hands" reaction since Tommy Shaw is the one who sang it and wrote it. It was a huge hit from their #1 album "Paradise Theatre" that filled the airwaves, along with "The Best of Times", "Snowblind" and "Rockin' The Paradise". A truly special album and another great Styx reaction. "Boat On The River" would be awesome for your next "Acoustic" live stream. It's their most popular international hit with over 30 million views on YT. You'll love it! ⛵🎶🪗
Paradise Theater....played it over and over when it came out. Another rabbit hole to explore.
This was my personal theme song during the lockdown
Great 70s-80s band, the girls loved em, which was very useful :)
"I got nothin' to do and all day to do it" is the soundtrack to the Greatest Days Ever. 🤪
One of my favorites from them! Great song.
I love your reactions and the way y'all put yourselves out there with what a lot of the songs meanings. One thing that is cool about Styx is that their albums have themes to them. Grand Illusion is mostly pertaining to the illusions we have of society and our own self. Cornerstone is mostly about reflections of cornerstones or moments of our lives. Paradise Theater has a lot to do with the fleeting glimpses of paradise, things not always actually being paradise and how paradise can be blinding. Pieces of Eight examines a lot of what is truly valuable to you in life, and that sometimes, it's just life itself that is valuable, not always money and fame. I loved how they connected the songs to make thematic albums. It's not only the complexity of the songs, but the whole album of itself. So when you listen to a Styx song, think of the themes to it. I'd love you to react to Snowblind. It's one of the downfalls of success(paradise )in the 80s by something that made you feel like you were in paradise when being snowblind. Please check it out. Thanks for all the great reactions. Also, I'm glad y'all got that burden of stress over with and congratulations on your child. Such a cutie
It's hilarious that Lex went right into the Robot! One of Styx's better known songs (and polarizing) is called "Mr. Roboto". Ya'll should check it out.
I spare changed my way into the Styx concert in my town back in the 70 ? late 70's. Was 6 bucks for tickets and they did a set from the Paradise Theater album, a few years before they released the album.
Thanks for playing this song. I forgot how much it is.
From the "Paradise Theatre" album, which chronicles the rise and fall of a Chicago theater. This song is based after the closing...
Styx always best watched live 3 awesome frontmen
Tommy Shaw wrote this song about a little bar in Niles MI. And what there was to do around Niles at the time.
Pretty much hasn't changed.
I remember Tommy at the Upper Deck. Just fun times. Like with Bruce at the Pony.
Styx should be in the rock and roll hall of fame, along with Boston, Foreigner, Supertramp, and several other groups who were huge in the mid to late 70's. They've been overlooked for too long.
In 1977 my brothers and I had matching jumpsuits, we wore them as normal school clothes.
Love your robot moves!!!!
One of my favorite STYX sons ....TOMMY SHAW WAS AN AMAZING SINGER
Oh my Tommy shaw ❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋
Lex is the best, she's a keeper,
Gotta watch the Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd version while this videos fresh Un your head!
Lex is so damn adorable when she's doing her "robot" type dancing😀Seriously though Styx had some great tunes and when Tommy Shaw joined Jack Blades and Ted Nugent in supergroup Damn Yankees they made some nice music also." Given up hope on tha afternoon soaps for this bottle od cold brew" tells the story of a unemployed or laid off blue collar worker. Great reaction Brad & Lex! You two rock my world!🤘
For something fun you should watch Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon recreate this video. It's hysterical.
Nothing to figure out. Sometimes a song is just a song Take it for what it is.
Cool,Cool,Cool was a fun band to see live ,,,
Beavis and Butthead wrecked the dude in the white jumpsuit with the phrase "Ooo sexy".
Thanks guys! This song gets better year after year and BLOWS UP on stage!
They just celebrated their 50th Anniversary of their first recording contract and they sound better than ever!
I've seen them every year since 2005 (except one) and they are still kicking ass, still recording and still some of the best entertainers I've seen.
Entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn't what it used to be, but this band belongs!!
A DAMN TRAVESTY!
And the band is SOLID. Only four members listed as 'past' members. John Panozzo passed away in 96, John Curulewski one of the four founding members passed away in 88, Dennis Deyoung left the band (for the last time) in 99 and performs 'the music of Styx' after an unhappy split and Glenn Burtnick who replaced Tommy Shaw who was recording with the Damn Yankees while Styx had been on a brief hiatus.
While it is true that Deyoung wrote and sang most of the band's hit songs, his replacement, Lawrence Gowan is every bit as capable a singer and twice the entertainer Deyoung was.
Dennis didn't "leave the band", Tommy and JY canceled him and wouldn't allow him back, even going as far as removing him from the Styx website and any mention of him. Please stop perpetuating that false narrative. Gowan's gruff, pinched, sandy, gristly and dry elf voice sounds NOTHING like Dennis, a truly great singer, and Gowan's infatuation with constantly exhibiting his backside to the audience while playing his spinning keyboard is annoying as hell. Seeing Dennis "live" is more of a true Styx show than the Will Evankovitch Styx we have now.
Saw Tommy Shaw open up for Rush back in the day. By far their best opening act, when they still had opening acts.
Omg this takes me back. Such a great beat! Thanks for posting this oldie, love your reactions🧡
This song brings me back to junior high school, when we had a school assembly and the cheerleaders did a dance to this song. I was 13 and in eighth grade, and all I can remember is how hot this was...great memories from 1983, such a fun time to be a teenager growing up then.
One of my favorites!
An all time top favorite band of mine- Not my favorite song of theirs, but still love them. 🙂
HAHA, This is the music I listened to the year I graduated from High School
I met my wife in the mid seventies and she had a killer jumpsuit. She looks so cute in it.
I haven't had too much time on my hands since 1985! LOL!
The vocalist and lead guitarist on this song is a good old Alabama boy from Montgomery Al. He is very underrated as a guitarist. He went on to become a member of the band Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack Blades.
The Paul Ruud shot for shot remake of this video is hilarious. Styx was a fantastic band.
I go to see Tommy Shaw (fronting his own band, after Styx broke up) opening for Rush in the late 80s, and he played this song and a few other Styx classics.
WE MISS YOU GUYS !😊 ❤ ❤ ❤
Great song. Great band. Damn Yankees was formed as a super group. Styx front man Tommy Shaw...Ted Nugent and Jack Blades from Night Ranger. A must review IMHO is "Don't Tread On Me"
I always took this as he was unemployed . I know I did the afternoon bar shift before when I was between jobs. One of my favorites by this awesome band, a very relatable banger and so much fun.
Back in the early 70's, Styx, REO Speedwagon and Cheap Trick used to play high school concerts and local club dates in northern Illinois, my old stomping grounds. We'd also get to see Jim Peterik and Survivor and Otis Rush among other top bands of that era. What a time to be young!
Awesome band. This line up was totaly killer.
Almost anything by Styx is great, but I'd love to see you react to "Fooling Yourself" or "Suite Madame Blue" next.
Tommy said he wrote this song in about 10 minutes. He heard the bass rhythm on the radio on his way to the studio. He had Chuck Panazzo lay down the bass beat and monkeyed with the rest of it and they recorded it in only two takes and it was in the bank.
They're currently touring with REO Speedwagon and Loverboy
Very soon, you guys need to react to Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon's shot-for-shot recreation of this video.
Love this
