    The interesting aspect is that the first part of the tomb is about the Exile's first decision that echoes the final decision on Malachor V. All the dialogue options are overall irrelevant for why you've chosen to join the war, but it's the final question that Malak asks that is the most important: ''You are all alone, will you not join us? You joined the war, you followed Revan, but why didn't you follow everyone else at the final step?''
    Why did the Exile not accept to fall to the Dark Side as everyone else had? Eventually, in the final part, you can see the Exile standing besides Revan. I interpret that scene as a possible future scenario where the Exile accepted power on Malachor V rather than cut all ties to the Force.
    I think that because people did not recognize the choice the Exile made on Malachor V, they were unable to understand the questions posed in the tomb itself. While the Exile is the player character for the player to control, it has its own past that must be understood through the events of the game. The most critical choice the Exile made was to not succumb to the Dark Side on Malachor V as all others had. The tomb is asking you whether you are confident in making that choice.

      I'd like to disagree with your interpretation. While I see that as possible and acceptable one, I would like to point out, as you said that the Exile resisted the dark side, but you leave out the fact that Kreia points out that she has no belief that Revan truly fell to the dark side of the Force, but rather took that role upon himself to be what the galaxy needed. My interpretation, having included that succinct point, is that Meetra (the Exile) stands next to Revan because THEY are the only ones of the war who truly understood. They both knew that they had to do what was necessary, whether it was consciously or not (as Kreia again points out when discussing why the Exile is so important to her and why she admires her and holds her above the Jedi and Sith in that she learned to survive without it and how to be stronger; she did what she had to in order to survive). In support of your point, I would say that the tomb itself is filled with dark side energies and the entire point of the "tests" and traps are concoctions of the dark side, which would lend credence to your point in that it could be the Exile accepting the dark side and the energies even going so far to show Revan portrayed as evil in order to propagate that image. I would argue though that your interpretation is more of one as from the Exile's perspective as it would within the cave, while mine is more inclusive of Kreia's beliefs and what we truly know happened to Revan (knowledge that the Exile does NOT have), which I why I believe mine more. I still understand and accept yours though.
      In connecting the first and third paragraphs that you wrote, I would say that dialogue options may be irrelevant to the overall story of the tomb, but they are ANYTHING but irrelevant to the player's experience. They allow the player to see the different reasons why any person could have decided to go to war, but there's definitely a "canon" dialogue option to follow. The choices are mainly dark or light, though they do throw in several options which are neither, but instead support what the character of the Exile would actually say, such as her response to Malak asking whether she would choose differently or not and the first option (followed by a light option, then a dark one) is "I wouldn't do anything differently. My choices have made the person I am today." There are several more throughout the cave that really drive home the idea that not everything is black and white and, more importantly, that it's actually BETTER for them not to. Her dialogue allows you to see Kreia's influence on the tomb (it's obvious), the dark side energy's goal in turn the Exile, and the Exile's strength and determination then, as well as now.

      I think that it is mincing words to say that there is a difference between a 'fall' and a sacrifice. The difference may be intent, but the outcome is the same. As Kreia said, Revan became the Darth Lord out of necessity and after the Jedi Council erased the memories, it brushed the surface and allowed Revan to find himself again. Regardless of intent, Revan had fallen to the Dark Side.
      However, the fall or sacrifice of Revan is somewhat inconsequential to the decision and life path of the Exile. Revan forced everyone on Malachor V to either fall to the Dark Side or die. HK-47 questions this and Kreia confirms it on Dantooine after interfering with the Jedi Masters.The Exile chose to cut itself from the Force either because it was afraid (to die of the dark side?) or because it had no choice to remain true to itself. That's why the Exile was unique, it chose something no one else ever had before. Between those three options, the tomb is portraying the only other path that isn't death: being at the hand of Revan, as everyone else had. That's why it echoes the question posed by Malak: ''will you not join us at the end if you followed us the entire way?''
      Also, if you look at the face of the alternate version of the Exile in the final parts of the tomb, you'll see that its face is definitely corrupted by the Dark Side. I attribute this as the Exile falling to the Dark Side as everyone else had.
      I don't overall disagree with your third paragraph and I might have overspoke by saying that they are irrelevant, as you explained.
      --
      I think that my interpretation lies in the outcome and catastrophe caused by the mass shadow generator on Malachor V and yours lies more in the choice of going to war and its difference with falling to the Dark Side. I think mine necessitates that the Exile could never have fallen by cutting itself where you view the Exile as potentially not falling to the Dark Side as Revan. But I somewhat disagree that Revan or the Exile had not 'fallen' to the Dark Side.

      Love this convo. Much to consider. Not sure I'm as capable as speaking as you two, but one thing I would bring to our attention is the fact the Kreia was admitted by Avalon to have been rushed at the end. That could mean several things, but my vague and distant memory recalls having interpreted that as meaning we should take early game Kreia to be more representative than late game Kreia. I think TSLRCM helps reveal some of the intentions with her, and even some things which seemed directly contradictory, which I recall counting as significant when I was more aware of them. I'm not now though, so forgive the lack of examples, and let this just be something you (both) mull over, in regards to what Kreia claims and what her intentions are.

    Interestingly, malak's remark "Your path isn't over yet" made me realize something. The test wasn't just refering to join those that fell to dark side, but to following Revan to the real sith. When Revan and Malak first found the sith and its emperor, they tried to defeat him. They failed, but it was this choice that this line references. For we know that the exile will indeed follow Revan and Malak's path to the true sith at the of light side route in the game.

    Quite in depth examination, referencing other conversations and opinions to support the various values held. I especially liked how you cross examined why the tomb of Ludo Kressh was vastly different than the others. That strength comes through will and mind, which was a point emphasized with the Exile and Hanharr. That his ability to access such extreme strength of body could not be tapped unless he could somehow overcome his animalistic instincts. And if he could not master himself then he was easily defeated or manipulated. The other Sith Lords booby trapped their graves with tests of physical might, and yet those came down first. Ludo Kressh's tomb wasn't plundered until the Exile found it.

    "What matters more? The action itself or the reason for said action?"
    THIS is so important!
    I just recently had to make a decision. I have a close friend who suffers from depression and other mental illnesses. We had a dispute over something and I really wanted to tell him the full truth about my opinion, that I knew he would disagree on. The problem was, from past experience I learned that if I was completely honest with him, he often couldn't handle the situation and he would become more depressed.
    So although I always want to be an honest and direct person, who wants to talk directly and openly about things that I see as a problem, I decided to lie to my friend about my opinion.
    I agreed with the points he made, although I in fact had the opposite opinion. But I wanted to protect him from more depression. The topic we had a dispute on wasn't even that so incredibly important, so I had to weigh up the consequences and telling the truth would have done him more harm than good.
    So yeah long story short, I think that it is sometimes ok to do something bad (e.g. lying) when you thought about the consequences carefully and you have good intentions, e.g. protecting someone you love.
    Another, more extreme example for this would be:
    Imagine you are a dutchman in 1941. The GESTAPO (german nazi police) knocks on your door and asks you if you shelter jews. If you actually did shelter some of them, would it really be morally "good" to tell the truth and to hand them over to a criminal regime regime, which would certainly kill them?
    I say no. I think you should lie, to protect them.
    So yeah I think the intentions are more important.
    And thanks for another excellent video, which gave me a lot to think about.
    You are a true enthusiast and I am very happy, that I found your channel.
    Keep it up!

    • @NumbingDisasterAnon
      @NumbingDisasterAnon 5 років тому +2

      I'd say it is a mix of both, one is not inherently more important than the either.
      Your intent means nothing if you do not act.
      And if you act and it goes badly or not in the way you anticipated, then your intent means nothing, only the result.
      Examples of these lines of thoughts:
      Your intent means nothing if you do not act, as in you may intend at some point to want to help the homeless, but if you do not help them get a job, give them food, build them houses, then it doesn't matter what your intentions or wants were, no one will be able to truly see them and they will never come to fruition.
      If you act and doesn't go the way you anticipated, it matters not your intent, only the result, as in in situations where your actions work against you or maybe you were in a state where you couldn't have intentions. You go to a party and you just wanna have fun, so you drink with your friends. Eventually you have to go home and in your inebriated state, you decide to drive your car...you drove there and you're not gonna walk home or leave your car there, right? Well, now you just ran over and killed a child. You didn't intend to kill the child, but the blood is still on your hands.
      Or maybe you found someone passed out on the street and they're not breathing. You call 911 and perform CPR...but it has been awhile or you haven't practiced. You chest compress too hard and not only crack a rib, but do so where it punctured the lung, or the heart. Now they're in an even worse state and their chance of dying has escalated because of your involvement. It matters not the intention, for you have probably sealed someone's fate.
      Intentions can matter in gauging who you are as a person, and that is very important. But with how reality works, the only thing that truly matters is the results of the actions. Results are ultimately the most important aspect at any given time. I think that is one of the greatest lessons with Revan that KotOR2 tries to convey. It matters not the intention, nor even the action you perform, but the results of said actions. The results reap you the consequences, the results make or break you and your story, the results save or doom the galaxy. The results care little for your intentions or even your actions, only determines the outcome of them, it holds no biases save for the effort that is put into them, and even then it can still be unexpected in any which way possible. No one, not even Revan, or Kriea, or you are safe from results.

    I think this tomb represents along with larger themes in the kotor comics along with this game that sheds light on the general doubt and confusion in the galaxy at the time. The Jedi councils own sense of arrogance and self interest during the mandalorian wars, hell the Jedi council on Taris was more concerned with a vision of darth vader and killing zayne carrick over protecting Taris from the Mandalorians, and Jedi who even joined the Mandalorians in hopes of strengthening the Jedi Order. There were a variety of smaller jedi councils across several republic worlds at that time; that give me pause to say that the galaxy at the time was shrouded in the dark side and confusion. The Mandalorians and Mandalore the Ultimate under the influence of Vitiate waged war to test the Republic and their own strength, the Republic trying to maintain an image, while refusing to look at their fragility of their infastructure and the selfishness of the core worlds to the outer rims at the hands of the Mandaloria ns and the Jedi conflicted with arrogance and dogma of a code of inaction vs action and intent in reaction to galaxywide suffering it is no wonder Revan chose the path he did similiar to Jacen Solo post Yuuzahn Vong war that exposed the Republic's inherent weaknesses as a system of government and albiet a rather personal reason to protect his daughter, began a campaign similiar to Revan's however less creative. This tomb to me is a test and to turn you to tge darkside, but it also is a window to the past for the player on the amount of self doubt that clouded people and the Jedi at that time. I think Revan not only did what he did in the Jedi Civil War to prepare for Vitiate, but also to test the Jedi's resolve, expose their inherent weakness and make them think to how they arrived at the Jedi Civil War, unfortunately the dogma and arrogant conviction among the Jedi and the Republic was only strengthened by an opposing side rather then a philosophical and infrastructural transformation, even though the Civil War left the galaxy devastated. However as we see in game it seems even some of the masters like Kavar have their eyes opened by the Exile and the past, which I think Revan was hoping for. What matters more? Action or intent? Well we can never truly see the long term repercussions of how one act can affect the world often until its too late Gavrilo Princip never expected WW1 to break out because of his actions, its a poor example, but id need to think on it.

    Very interesting video. I can now begin to understand even better what Kreia had to say. Thank you for this video.
    I suppose this is a very complex issue. I really never saw the Jedi with a "panic to changes" mentality, seeing them more as seeking the status quo, balance. Equilibrium. But, now I can see the connections between this and the fact that the Council standed against changes. Because as Kreia says: "Because you, were afraid".
    Then, one has to consider that the Sith principle of conflict is true. Or at least partially true. That life is conflict. Perphaps not conflict as perpetual war, but the Sith are right that life is a constant struggle and that one has to fight in order to stay strong. So, Kreia (or the Sith for that matter) are right to point out this flaw of the Jedi.
    However, in the Star Wars universe, everything is influenced by the Force. Which is why Kreia hates it. Maybe its the Force that forces and bends certain aspects of life. It takes away the real choices and steals thoughts. Perphaps Kreia hates the Force because it can influece these tests, for example. You take the test, but it is the will of the Force that in the end decides your fate.
    But considering the Exiles unique nature, "an emptiness in which its will might be denied", maybe what I just say wouldnt affect her. Just my thoughts.
    Fastastic videos, as always. Looking forward to part two!

    I always believe that everyone are doing something for a reason, some action can be seen as incredibly cruel out of necessity, one simply can't frame everything in black and white point of view and to me, it makes me think of a lot of stuff that had happen around in this world as there will be time, an action that can be seen as "good" to you and your friends or family can be seen as negative to others, where there's action, one should be aware of the consequence on things they're doing and I have to say that playing this game is truly a fascinating experience for me.

    I still believe the Jedi Council had a point, and the outcome of the Mandalorian War followed by the Jedi Civil War proved they were right in they're own way. The problem however was still they're inaction, not only did they suspect there was a Sith hand that lead to the Mandalorian War but they chose to "wait" instead of investigating at least and forming a contingency plan. Might not have saved everyone but it might have stopped the Jedi Civil war from happening or at least to that magnitude. Bioware views the light side (and every other positive/good alignment) as lawful good and the dark side (and every other negative/bad alignment) as chaotic evil (the reason why Bendak's bounty and the Genohardan are dark side is that your breaking the law to do so and that goes against being lawful), meanwhile Obsidian views the light side as what a Jedi would do (the reason why going "rah rah The Jedi and Republic are the greatest things ever gets you light side points), and views the dark side as what a Sith would do.

    A conspicuously absent moment from the ‘trials’ appearing in the tomb is the decision to activate the Mass Shadow Generator above Malachor. Obviously, there are reasons why the writers wouldn’t put that in here, but it does make you wonder a bit about the role of causality in this whole thing.
    No Malachor, no game. Malachor is the heart of all of it - the raison d’etre. Before the exile was, Malachor awaited her: a choice between death and something arguably worse, and one which only she could have made.

    Love these videos. Much to think on. Not finished watching yet, but I'm distracted and wanted to say:
    I think the rock music is a bit distracting. Both in terms of being slightly too loud, the wrong pace, and not Star Wars, at least, not that I'm aware.
    The last one particularly, both because I like the music in this game, and especially because you had already used a bit of the game's music, so it seems on odd pairing. Only complaint thus far, well done on the images, and sharing them with us.

    I have been learning about meditation. About experiencing only the present. It has reduced my worry and my stress. Not be living in a past or future. But I wonder if I am being apathetic. If I treat life as a game, as something to be experienced without prejudice, am i making a mistake? Am I dead to life, cut off. Or am I living as much as I could possibly?

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  6 років тому +1

      Depends. What are you doing with this reduced worry and stress?

    • @fishcakes6594
      @fishcakes6594 6 років тому +1

      Accepting life as it is is not apathy. Making a conscious choice to not rise to the occasion when action is required is. There is nothing wrong with living in the present. The key is to not forget the lessons of the past and to strive for a better future.
      Keep up the meditation if it helps you. But dont get so caught up in philosophy or psychology that you forget to actually experience the things happening around you.

    Am I correct that Bastila walking over to Malak’s side and Malak saying, “In time, she came to our way of thinking” is referring to Bastila’s fall to the dark side at the end of KOTOR 1?

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  Рік тому

      I wouldn't think so. Because the tomb is using the Exile's memories to influence them. The Exile doesn't know that that happened. There's also no way for the Tomb to know anything about what Bastila thought beyond the Exile's memories. The tomb is lying.

  • @Garmagic2yFhenrakh9
    @Garmagic2yFhenrakh9 3 роки тому +1

    A question. If you follow only dark side choices through the tomb, is it possible to avoid combat in some occasions? Because that would prove that thing Yoda said in Episode V; calling the Dark Side "the easy path" if I remember correctly while Luke was doing footing and he was on his back.

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  3 роки тому +1

      You can't completely avoid fights altogether, but you will make the fights easier. For example, in the second section with the mines, the soldiers run through the mines, clearing them for you and fight the mandalorians. In section three, Apathy is dead moment, the dark path makes it you and all the rest of your party members against Kreia.

    I've gone back to okay Kotor 1 and 2 and I was wondering if the purpose of Korriban in the first one is to teach us about the dark side, or more accurate to reteach Revamp about the Dark side. And if in the second one it's to bring the Exile to a neutral state of mind. As you have to be more light side or dark side it could be to allow the Exile to truly understand Kreia and her teachings. As most folks usually start playing the first time around and odds are go light side. Just a thought

    There is a common misconception about what it means to bring balance to the Force. Many people often think it is simply keeping both the Light Side and Dark Side of the Force in check so that neither side triumphs over the other (very similar to the Ying Yang or when Thanos said "perfectly balanced as all things should be"). The reality is that even though the term "Light Side" appears very often in Canon and Legends material, it is almost never used in the movies (except possibly or indirectly in The Force Awakens).
    Simply put, there is the "Force" and there is also the corruption or perversion of said entity (Dark Side). According to George Lucas himself, he stated the Dark Side is like a "craving" or an addictive drug. It twists you holistically and transform you into someone who isn't your true self. To bring balance to the Force is to completely eradicate all traces of the Dark Side. The term "Light Side" is often used for gaming purposes and is basically just another term for the Force in itself.
    Thus, the idea of "true neutrality" where both the Light Side and Dark Side existing in balanced harmony is a lie. Yes, everyone has a "Dark Side", but it is the choices you make and how you deal with it is what truly matters in the end.

    I would disagree with the assertion that it is impossible to be a good warmonger. There are many examples of people who fought for good causes and gloried in the battles they fought; General Patton comes to mind as a historical representative of this. We also see it in Judeo-Christian ideology, as the Bible contains representations of it in King David, Samson, and even God Himself in the minor prophets. I agree with the rest of this, though.

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  5 років тому

      Apart from him being a 4 star general during ww2, I don't really know much about what kind of a person George Patton was. But was he a warmonger? Did he advocate for war just for the sake of war? Warmongers enjoy war. They revel in the destruction and death, not for any kind of cause.

    • @fritzypoo
      @fritzypoo 5 років тому

      @@PapitoQinn he didn't advocate war for the sake of war, but he did say that he loved it. He sort of saw himself as having been born for that war, and didn't know what he was going to do with himself after it.

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  5 років тому

      That's sad. About him loving it is messed up, no matter the cause. But everything else is saddens me. To tie your life to violence, your raison d'etre to an event that claimed tens of millions of lives, then be lost without it in times of peace.

    • @fritzypoo
      @fritzypoo 5 років тому

      I suppose, if that's how you view violence. I don't see violence as being moral or immoral, only the reasons for its use. Violence in the name of justice is a very good thing, and being good at it is its own good.

    • @PapitoQinn
      @PapitoQinn  5 років тому

      I would consider violence to be a negative, but it can be used for good. Justice and ever revolutions don't have to come about through violence. In fact I have much greater respect for such accomplishments without violence. Violence is easy. Even Kreia says that every situation has potential for violence, but real strength comes from being able to keep that violence in check and still achieve your objective. Of course, if someone else is bringing violence to you, then that's a little different. But with Patton, maybe I'm wrong, but you're making it sound like war is all he could comprehend, and in his mind he's nothing without it.
