Howard Zane is the BEST anachronism... ever! :) I met him at a Train Show, in Orlando, FL (2005), IIRC, (Orlando Fair Grounds). I have two of his books, that he authored, & although he surely doesn't need my endorsement, IMHO, "WHAT HE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT TRAINS...AIN'T-WORTH-KNOWIN'!" Thanks for all you've done, Howard, sir! CHEERS! :) "LIFE IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL...!" My favorite Howard Zane quote...
Belated Happy Birthday Howard. I spent many pleasant hours at Howard's home when I was a vendor at his Timonium shows (dba North Coast Hobbies) and was always impressed by his collection, knowledge, friendliness, and the bluegrass music. Take care.
Jeez, I remember as an 8-year-old kid back in the mid 1960s visiting Bill's Collector's Hobby Shop (the original one) just across from the Park Ridge, IL, Chicago & North Western Railway commuter train station. It was one of those one aisle hobby shops in an old building, a little dark inside, stuffed with everything from model airplane kits to Matchbox diecast vehicles to brass trains. The owner, Bill Sanchez, had glass cases filled with brass locomotives and the prices of them back then seemed astronomical to someone my age. Thanks for sharing!
Fascinating discussion. Amazing collection of models. Thank you to both of you for the education. I do wish I had snapped up some brass items in my youth. Happy Birthday Howard.
Happy 86th Howard! Loved the episode and that you showed Howard’s collection, lots of beautiful stuff. Would love just to be able to see his collection in person, but thanks to you I get about as close as I’ll probably get. I do gotta say that even though I only have 4 brass engines and 5 brass cabooses, if there was more models that I was after, I would definitely be trying to add more to my collection. The first time I actually saw a brass model and held it in my hands, I know that it was something special. Hopefully one day I can get one of my 614 models from Key upgraded with sound and run it with my Chessie fleet, but watching it run on DC is just so mesmerizing to watch oddly enough. Thanks for sharing and can’t wait for the next show!
Happy Belated Birthday Mr. Zane!. I remember , back in the early 80's,when I was a little kid,NJ International imported brass ,Reading MU 3 coach sets. I wanted a set so bad because I rode the ol' blueliners out of Chestnut Hill East to the Reading terminal a lot back then. If I'm not mistaken the set was going for $395.00 per set at the time. Finding those now is like finding a needle in a haystack, lol.
That's me! 👉 25:33. I don't have a layout, but, I collect a lot of HO scale brass. I buy them because I LOVE train, NOT to sell them as commodities. And I just don't have the space to build one, or have a layout. I don't have the knowledge to build a layout, either. I'm an "armchair" model railroader, and I'm getting kinda old. Before my time runs out, I want to build a lavish layout like Howard's.
Hey there Mr Zayne. I thought a lot about your words in this video. I remember back in the 1980s I saw an article in TRAINS magazine about you and your same layout you still have!
Thanks for posting this great video with Howard. Can you please let me know what is the average asking price for 1 of these brass locos? I would love to have one of them.
Email me at alpug1@verizon.net and I can price you out some affordable steam engines he has to start your collection. Remember most brass is not dcc but can be converted
As I and most likely others as they age loose some articulation and forget many words......and button their shirts wrong as you can see. As Al continues on with this series on brass, I'll try to button my shirt correctly, trim my facial fur, and try to speak more clearly. It is good for me at age now 86 to do these with Al and I enjoy sharing what I can remember about brass models. Who knows? Next year I will have forgotten still more facts. Thanks for birthday wishes. I greatly appreciate this more than most can imagine.
I have a brass engine that I was told came from Mr Zanes collection. Is there anyway I can send you pictures to confirm this??? The piece is very special to me
86 and still kicking ass! Happy Birthday sir 🎂

Got any Unpainted NP L-9s for sale?
Will check with Howard
It would be cool to know some prices or at least have a ball park guess on how much these are selling for
Happy Birthday! Question... How much is that Pennsy K4s? Looks like an MTH Model...
None of them are plastic, all of them are brass.
Al, how do I contact you if I am interested in one of Howard's brass models?
