- Today I will be making some wintergreen flavoring, aka methyl salicylate, from Aspirin. Then, I will eat it.

lol i made this in my first year at university. It's a very simple and straightforward series of reactions, first you take Aspirin, and you turn it into Aspearin, then Aspearmint, and then you perform a reduction and get mint.
underrated
then i take the aspear and throw it at someone

You could add some sweetness with lead acetate.

cody can drink mercury and not die, he is basically unkillable
cody just ingested a few milligrams of cyanide. it was way below any lethal dose, so anybody could do that and wouldn't be harmed...dosage makes the poison.

You should think about getting a black light for your liquid separations. I used a UV light often when trying to show two phases in a reparatory funnel that appeared to be very similar in regular light. I think it would help you show this in the future.
That is an interesting point!
Not Not Good Gaming; Many functional groups are quite sensitive to UV though...
Might be better to use a collimated light source (like a red laser with a greatly expanded beam width) to illuminate both phases from the side. However, this would only work well if the phases have quite different refractive indicies.
MRLT that is an interesting point!
I got told to add some super saturated brine if I had difficulty distinguishing the organic layer from aqueous

can you try to synthesize menthol next? or maybe extract it from mint plants..
that would be a cool thing to add to this series ;)
its a bit more complex of a project but i think he could do it.
Synthesizing it would be quite hard for the amateur chemist, but extracting it would be quite feasible!
Honestly I think that's a great idea. Like, steam distillation of crushed mint to get the essential oil, and then extracting the menthol from it or something..?
exotictoad that wold be cool
love to see more of that soxhlet extractor action!
Can we take a moment to appreciate how often a simple coffee filter which most of us use everyday can also be utilized in complex chemical reactions?

You could overdose on chocolate due to the theobromide in it. However, that would take *a lot* of chocolate to accomplish, since humans aren't that susceptible to it. (Dogs on the other hand can get poisened by it easily.)
When I was little, my cousin and I picked mint leaves in my grandparent's garden. We tried to squeeze the mint oil out with a bench vise to make gum. Of course, we failed miserably - but we had such a fun time trying. She passed away in 1997 at 20 years old. This was one of my favorite memories of her. I've always wondered how to make mint gum from scratch. Anyway, keep up the good work - I really enjoy the edible chemistry videos and all your videos!

Fun fact: the frontier was actually more peaceful and lawful than the cities. There was far less corruption and crime.
citation needed
yogacastwatcher I am Dave! Yognaught
Rural areas virtually always have lower rates of crime than urban areas.
Not really. Though there is some variance, crime rates are pretty much proportional to population.
If there's 30 robberies per 100,000 people per week, then in a city of 1 million, that means 300 people are getting robbed a week.
If you're talking about a town of 500, or even a rural area with far les than that...
Well, let's say you have 10 robberies in that town in a year...
How much crime is this, proportionally speaking?
Well, 500 people, 10 crime in 52 weeks... 10/52 crimes per week, 500 / 100,000 people.... ~ 0.192 / 0.005 that's 38.5 crimes a week per 100,000 people, which is higher than the crime rate in the city.
That's a contrived example of course, but if you put enough people together it might seem like there's lots of crime, but that's only because there's lots of people.
For the amount of people there are, crime rates are typically quite consistent, and can even tend to be slightly higher in rural areas than in cities, in general.
Crime rates do vary enormously by region though, irrespective of whether you're talking about cities or rural areas.
Even different parts of the same city can have vastly different crime rates though...

I do also have a video suggestion (just an idea, not trying to tell you what you should do at all!): - How about doing a series about carbon-carbon bond forming reactions? The main ones, I mean. You could start with the most common / 'easiest' ones and end at the most advanced (but still relatively commonly used) reactions that you can carry out with the equipment that you currently have.
Another topic I would love to see, would be selective photochemical synthesis (i.e. Using a narrow-band light source to selectively drive a reaction in a way that would be impossible, or impractical, thermally).
You’re so funny . I love your Practical skills
