The fact that the Spurs go from bottom of the league defensively when Wemby not on the floor…to Top 5 should say enough about Wemby DPOY case.
Honestly what's sad is they're not even bottom 5 without wemby and that's with them being really young and not communicating not helping alot and leaving guys on an island at times, like they look really bad yet somehow are better than 5 other teams. Makes u think how bad are those teams are

It doesn't quite work like that. So if you make that adjustment for Wemby to compare/contrast, you have to also make that adjustment for every other team. If the focus is just getting an idea of how much impact Wemby has, it's fine, doesn't really matter. The Spurs as a whole don't just jump into the top 5, at least not necessarily. You have to also take every other team's best player, look at the defense when he is on the court and then rank all the defenses accordingly. Otherwise what you're looking at is the average of all the NBA teams vs Spurs only when Wemby is on the court instead of average of all the NBA teams also only when their best defensive player is on the court vs Spurs and Wemby.

To me it's a sham to take an individual award and give team success a ton of consideration. It's supposed to be an individual award. You can add some value towards team success. If individual success never translate to team success, then how valuable are you really? I just wouldn't put as much weight on team success for MVP, DPOY, etc as voters do for the individual awards in the NBA. I think Wemby should run away with it this season. Gobert is a really good defender though and the same way Wemby shouldn't be punished for being on a bad team (both offensively and defensively), Gobert shouldn't be punished for being on a good team. The Wemby on/off court stat has a considerable flaw if you don't also make the same adjustment for every other team. It is a good indicator though.

Swap Wemby and Gobert, and suddenly Wemby is the clear frontrunner for DPOY. So clearly the criteria has nothing to do with the individual player's performance, and that's ridiculous.
Gobert is consistent, he knows what it's like to be the best defensive player, in the best defense in the entire NBA, multiple times. Top 1, Top 2, Top 3 etc... with Utah, the best defenders he had over 9 years, it's Favors and Royce O'Neal. Gobert with the Spurs, the spurs are in the top 10 defensively.

- Leads the league in blocks (by far)
- Leads the league in stocks (by far) - #2 in steals league-wise in February…
- Spurs defense is elite (#5) with him on the floor. Could have been higher had he played center full season…
- Spurs defense is DEAD LAST when he’s off the floor. Not only dead last but also historically bad defensively. Competing for the “worst defensive team ever” title when he’s off the court.
- Only player with 10 blocks in a game this season.
- Only player with back to back 5steals 5blocks games since MJ.
- And the number of shots the opposing team does not take because he’s there is probably his biggest argument that does not show up in the stat sheet.
- Opposing teams are setting high screens, double screens, re-screens, just to make sure he’s out of the paint… for a rookie… That’s how impactful he is.
He is the DPOY and it’s not even close.

The awards voting is definitely flawed and needs a hardline criteria that makes it’s fair and logical. Wemby should’ve been an all star honeslty, it’s why I hate that it’s only 12 roster spots per conference but nba teams have 15 max. There should at least be 15 guaranteeing a rookie from each conference gets a spot. The USA Basketball team had a tradition where they pick one college student to join the roster. Anthony Davis was on the redeem team after Kentucky.

Team success should have never played as big of a factor for DPOY as it does for MVP. I honestly don’t think team success should ever play a role for individual awards except for when the race is close. With DPOY it’s not even close and we still got more basketball left but Wemby is clearly the most IMPACTFUL defender in the league rn and for that reason alone he should win especially when if he’s on the floor they have the 2nd best defense.

Wemby isn't the 1st 7 foot plus unicorn Center, and what happens is these bean pole type of players are more of the Bol Bol types, 4 PPG and then once in a blue moon a monster performance. I agree with Draymond, however, with the criteria that he requires LOW proved him wrong still. I don’t think Rudy is a bad defender by any means but he’s not great. He’s good in rotation, he’s great at getting contests, he’s good at shot blocking, but I haven’t seen him stop or intimidate any great offense in the playoffs. I understand it’s a team game, but I would say the same for someone who wins MVPs every year but are first round exits every year. At some point being the “best” on a given side of the floor has to contribute to a ring or deep playoff run and he hasn’t done either. Good defender not great or how he’s made out to be. Wemby to me, already has a better impact on the defensive floor than Gobert do, Wemby might end up being a much better defender when it’s all said in done as well.
In soccer, you could get goalkeeper of the year even if your team leaks 2.5 goals a game and is bottom of the keague, if you are saving 10 shots a game and basically rule your area. And if you're a rookie, it won't matter.
When you are in a loosing team, you can go for risky plays and if they pan out great (you get a steal or a block), if they don't, no big deal you're going to loose anyway. On a wining team you take way less risks that could hurt your team chances.

Lol I typed out the stats like an idiot because i paused the video. But i think thats enough to prove his case. Ppl also use that same metric with Mvps etc. His relative defensive impact is honestly unmatched. And if you look deeper, his impact of shot selection is also crazy, but you dont need the stats but 2 working eyes to see that.
My only problem with him winning as a rookie is his numbers are only going up so if he wins this year then he has to win every year that his numbers get better. That's why the advanced stats are useful for this.
