You can't separate the art from the artist because the art created is the artist's expression. But you can enjoy the music while also being honest about the bad behavior of the artist. It's also not bad to want problematic artists to lose power in the music industry so there's real consequences.
@@yokaigypsy not every person deserves a platform when they have bad behavior and do nothing to fix it, it's that simple those people don't deserve to succeed
You're free to discontinue support for an artist for any reason as they aren't entitled to your money and attention no matter how good they are. The question ought to be "Can I separate the actions and controversies of insert artist from their art that I enjoy?" I can do that with some artists and not others
I can honestly say certain artists' music is difficult to sift thru without thinking of the vile things they've done in life. However, if you're the kind of person who just listens to the music and tune out the person behind the art, you can enjoy it to an extent.
If the Artist can Hold themselves Accountable for their Short comings and Are actively trying to be and do better , I think we should let them ..... We all Mess up , we all gotta grow and Learn from our mistakes and I think we should give them and their art both a Chance
For me, it really depends on what kind of person you are & how bad the situation around the artist has been. You can choose to view that artist or artist's music however you want.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I can separate the art from the artist until there is a direct line you could draw from the theme of the art to the misdeeds of the artist (ie sexual music to R Kelly’s sex crimes). The only thing I would add is that, at least for me, there have been times where the art was actually made BETTER by the misdeeds. For example, in the song Runaway, Kanye discusses his flaws and the way he deals with them. He can admit to them but can never really get himself to apologize and change and instead he just plows through and if anybody is harmed by his actions, so be it. The fact that he seemingly dealt with the anti-semitism the same way as all of the flaws discussed in the song shows (he just kept saying more anti-Semitic things, never really apologized, then just left the public eye for awhile so everyone else could deal with the consequences) shows how the song was such an accurate reflection of who he is as a person. In addition, the song “Love the Way You Lie” was made better for me by the fact that both Eminem and Rihanna have been in abusive relationships in real life (obviously Rihanna was not the abuser, but Eminem was) because I know that neither of them were faking their emotions
I been said this & that it should be separated. Bc if that's the case A LOT of everyday places such as Walmart, Disneyland, McDonald's etc. etc. May be founded by some of the most biggity ppl or horrible ppl. But yet, you still shop there, eat there, take your kids there. So it's contradicting. It's no difference for artists.
This is just subjective point. In the same way ppl feels music, for someone it’s just entertainment, for other ppl it’s a therapy and storytelling from an artist that’s resonating with you
A large chunk of people who say we should separate the two, fail to do so. And instead will defend their favorite artist because they make great music, not realizing that they are the ones failing to separate art from the artist. Is Kanye's music catalog GOATed? Absolutely. Is he a mentally broken racist piece of shit? Unquestionably. Is the music he releases going to be listened to? Of course, he's a musical icon. Am I going to support him in discussions, buy his merch, go to his concerts? Of course not, in what world would I support anyone else in my life who's an anti-semitic moron.
This is only said when an artists does something people don’t care about, but when it’s something they do care about “separate art from the artist” is thrown out the window
Might be a controversial take but I think you can easily separate the art from the artist when it comes to people like R. Kelly. If you ignore his over the top sexual songs and focus on the gospel, club and spiritual songs he made. It's enjoyable to listen to him imo. And for the point you made about Kanye's song 'hey mama', you can use that exact same point for R. Kelly's song 'Sadie' which was written about his late mother also. At the end of the day, just listen to whoever you want to. Just because you enjoy the songs of a bad person, doesn't make you a bad person also.
Crazy how a artist can rap about slidding on his opps, smashing women that ain't his wife and doing copious amounts of drugs but we wanna take the moral high ground with Kanye. Last time I checked Kanye didn't commit any crimes or alleged to have commit any crimes like the artists named with him. I would "cancel" a whole lot more artist before "cancelling" Kanye and I ain't even a fan like that tbh. Nobody's a saint.
I would say you cant seperate art from artist because the art is the artist expressing themself. What you can do however is criticize the artist for the actions while still enjoying the art.
I don’t mind the artist having their own opinions and thoughts on certain subject matters. But when it does come to these artist assaulting people, children and overall being a bad person who ruining other people lives I can’t support or listen to their art. Kanye whether you like his opinions or not he does have right to say them and we may agree and disagree with his thoughts at times but it’s nothing criminal. Chris brown served his time and made his amends and plus Rihanna forgave him for his actions and all those factors played a part in supporters and fans being able to rock with Chris brown till this day and he can continue his career. As for Mr.Kelly I think we can all say we were huge fan of him and his R&B catalog but after the nastiness that he’s done for years with kids; that’s when you start to realize he used his art to cover up his nastiness behind the scenes for all these years and he knew “hey if I can keep making great music, anytime I’m accused of something I can drop a new song and that will make people forget about my nasty allegations”. So that right there for me made me not want to listen to Rkelly anymore and I’m not judging people who still do but I would honestly feel betrayed by artist that went and touched kids just like we feel disgusted and betrayed by any other adult that harms a child in the pedo way. Rkelly shouldn’t get a pass just because he made great music.
